This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

They hadn't just randomly bumped into each other this time in Nerio City. She'd caught wind that he was in town as soon as she'd settled into the Pokemon Center for the night, and well, that called for a good training battle or two, she thought.
"Glad you could make it," she said.
In front of her stood two riolus, both of them fairly newborn, but one of them a bit more experienced than the other.
J had been around nerio for quite a while, and upon receiving a call from neo, he figured that there was something coming up pretty soon. he suspected that it might be a battle; they had somehow come to an agreement that if they needed something to spar off against and were in the same location, they'd challenge each other.
and so, J stood with an onix by his side. dredge was a fairly new beast, caught some time ago, but had never seen the light of day. (it had been in its pokéball for ages.) it was newly-vaccinated though, and the trainer finally had the confidence to pit it in battle.
"Something new," Neo said, almost smiling in something approaching glee. She peered at the onix, whipped out ye olde pokedex, and took down a new entry. "Fantastic."
J almost expected neo to whip out her pokédex and the researcher did as soon as he thought of it. the trainer watched the dex scan and ping as it downloaded the onix's data.
"dredge, harden. you're going to tank those blows."
dredge glanced at the trainer, and gave a small nod. tank blows, right. okay, it could do that.
the onix groaned as it heard neo give her orders. whatever that meant, it was a lot of words, and it braced itself to be struck by the two speedy riolu. it glared down at them, but J looked it in the eye and dredge sobered.
it finally roared, unleashing rage on the two newborns.
"... sorry, neo," J yelled over the uproar that was an onix smashing itself against the ground.
"No problem. I'm no trainer, but I'm pretty good," she reassured, showcasing her humility or the complete lack thereof.
Both sidestepped the rage. Dirge tumbled neatly back, and Atalanta shuffled aside. Off-balance now, Neo knew they couldn't pull that off again until they were steadier on their feet. "Endure, both of you. Then quick attack."
dredge glanced around it, finding no squishy soft object under its rocky torso. "nix!" it roared, raging about again before atalanta and dirge struck its body, causing it to glance around frantically, its attack forgotten.
the onix raged about, confused as to where it was being hit. having two riolu tag team it was horribly confusing, and dredge finally gave up with a mighty roar. it raised itself up to its full height, bore down on the two creatures, then moved back to J's side.
it'd had enough, and it wanted to make sure J knew by glaring down at its trainer. J could sense that it was fuming; he couldn't understand pokémon speech, but dredge was radiating murderous tendencies. he recalled it, and glanced over at neo.
"... i think dredge's feeling a little like icarus."
The two riolu high-fived each other in... well, they counted it as a victory.
"Truly? But it was an interesting study of his durability and fortitude. I thought it was very revealing," she said. She paused. "All the same, I'd suggest getting that onix a good masseuse."
"dredge used a lot of self-restraint back there," said J as he thought about the onix's enraged expressions during its ordeal. "would you like to train again?"
