This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

the di manes caverns were so much different from the books. isaac tread carefully through the pieces of land that had broke free from the ground, and jumped the last few in order to reach the other side. lava licked and exploded in small bubbles; he didn't want to turn around for fear of what he'd see.
the ranger eventually reached the other side and heaved a sigh of relief. that was dangerous. how far until nerio, he didn't know. he waited for clavier and his assist pokémon to cross safely to the other side, before deciding to take a break in the area overlooking the lava.
wow, he couldn't believe he'd just crossed that. and in one piece too!
his tent was set up right in the middle of the small tunnel, blocking the exit. maybe it was a rude thing to do, but elias hadn't really expected anyone to travel through the cave at night. of course, by now it was well past morning, and elias would wake to see the afternoon sun high in the sky.
he was planning on dining in nerio and staying there for a few days after, but that obviously wasn't happening today. elias, if he ever woke up, would be there by dinner time. he rolled over, arm sticking out of the tent and onto the dirt.
actually, he tripped not because of the hand, but because his assist pokémon had laid flat across the warm grounds and caused him to trip. the ranger's face met ground, and it hurt. "oww," muttered isaac as he quickly sat up, looking at the dratini with a frown. "that wasn't too nice."
the dratini said something about a hand, and the ranger glanced up and over -- there was indeed an arm sticking out of a tent. his first thought was actually to wonder if it was a dead body, really. clavier followed after the dratini and isaac, and stopped beside the ranger to look at the arm.
"..."
there was a silence, before isaac muttered: "clavier, go poke it? please?"
the axew did as it was told, gingerly poking the arm with one of its tusks.
elias never remembered his dreams, so it was no problem that he didn't even remember dreaming, let alone what it was about. he can remember going to sleep and waking up, but the boy remembers nothing in between, save for a few moments with his pokemon.
the teenager is still out like a rock, breathing heavily. all of this training and traveling made elias awfully tired, and he had practically collapsed here after he got through the di manes cavern. he should definitely wake up now and get going again, but nature hasn't taken it's course and the boy's eyelids are still weighed down.
poke, poke. elias stirred, but did not wake up. vertigo

"um, try again?" isaac asked gingerly, glancing at the dratini before sending it to elias as well. clavier attempted poking elias again, while the dratini bumped into his arm lightly. he didn't know if it'd actually work this time, or he would need to draw some sort of sign to see if it wasn't a dead body.
more pokes, and if the person didn't stir -- wait a second.
"clavier, is the arm warm?"
the axew tilted its head. it ... didn't know. it was a dragon, and cold-blooded. sort of; it didn't know if it was a dead body or a live human, but it could find out. it trotted towards the mouth of the camp and attempted to look in to see if the human was breathing.
dratini returned to isaac's side, not wanting to leave the boy unprotected.
talking. and poking. and elias was not happy about it. he felt something sharp-ish lightly poking his arm, over and over again. he mumbled a very quiet "go away..." and rolled over, arm flipping over as well. no, he didn't want to wake up yet. it wasn't morning yet. elias just wanted to get some more rest, so whoever was outside should just go away. leave him be. elias needs his beauty sleep, thank you.
and then he remembered that kohaku was inhibited by flesh eating zombie pokemon monsters. ouch. so the boy leapt up, yanking his arm back into the tent and quickly zipping it up as quickly as he could. he swiped his hair out of his face and widened his eyes, watching the shadow of a pokemon outside his tent. "wh- who is it?" he asked, trying his best to sound a little braver than he really was.
dratini blinked. electricity circled the end of its tail as it readied a thunder wave to fire off at the 'dead body', but isaac stopped it by raising a finger to his lips and shushing the creature. he trusted clavier to be able to figure out what it was.
it turned out that the axew was no less spooked than its fellow dragon-type. flames were already hissing through its maw, and clavier felt that the heat wasn't doing its judgment any favors. it stepped back as soon as elias withdrew his hand and zipped up his tent with a snap.
clavier blinked. so did dratini and isaac.
isaac had to act quickly as soon as elias spoke, as a long silence would only serve to be more awkward for the trio. "just a passing-through ranger," he said carefully, not wanting to tread on the temper of a just-awoken person, "you were sleeping with your hand out the tent ...
"it was sort of in the way."
we thought you were a dead body didn't sound right.
eos? he asks, speaking loudly through the tent. most people he met were- maybe that was just a coincidence, but elias didn't think so. some people would lie in this kind of situation, just to get him out of his safe tent and into the open. you never know.
sorry. elias does open the tent, but peers cautiously out before crawling into the open. i'm elias. he really did seem like a ranger, but the blue haired trainer kept a watchful eye on isaac anyway. sure, he seemed nice enough- but you can't tell who people are at first glance. better safe than sorry, right? vertigo

"yes," said isaac, nodding. "i'm isaac. it's a pleasure to meet you, elias." he extended a hand to the other boy, wondering why he was still cooped up in his tent.
his pokémon nodded their greetings in unison, dratini more exuberantly than clavier.
