This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Cameron never strayed far from Proserpina. Not when he knew he had a gym to return to and a leader to take down. They had made it no further than Ceres before Cameron decided that they had to turn back. He thought they were strong enough now. The man had two Pokemon at the ready and in their ball, clasped tight against his belt where they wouldn't be lost.
At the trainer's back was his dearest friend. Cameron had read no rules that stated friends weren't allowed to tag along and cheer the trainers on. And, who knew? Zachary might benefit from the battle. He might learn more from seeing the powerful fossils that leader Jasper was known to have.
There was a faint ping that echoed through the elevator as the metal doors parted and allowed the two boys out onto the playing field. Before they had entered the elevator, there had been nothing but walls upon walls of books, and it had been difficult to tear Zachary away and bring him down the elevator with them. But, once they'd reached the bottom, all that was gone and it was empty.
"Stick to the sides, Zachary. No need to get involved or stand where you might get caught in the crossfire," Cameron whispered, grabbing the smaller boy's sleeve and pulling him closer so that he'd here.
But he let go and stood tall, taking wide strides toward the arena. "Well, Jasper? I hope you've made a little time in your schedule for a fight."
Like hell he was going to get involved. Zach was staying close to the other, easily able to hear him. Nodding softly, he left Cam's side and stepped out of the way. Last thing he needed was to be considered a fighter. Not his style.
Picking a spot, Zach leaned up against the wall and kept his arms tight around his darling with him. An ever curious Snivy. He was watching Cameron just as Zach was, cautiously and nervously. Was this alright? He hoped so. It would be awkward to get kicked out by a gym leader.

Jasper had been arranging his bookshelves. Peridot was out, pressing the heavy wooden furniture with his head, and the moved slowly as its muscles strained. "Keep pushin'! Ya got this!" he cheered over the pokemon's shoulder.
As the the door to the elevator opened, two boys entered. Jasper grinned, his hands coming to his hips. "Hello there!!!" he boomed. "Of course there's time! I'll make sure to test your capabilities to the best of mine." One of the kids sat down. The brawny leader smiled and nodded at him, acknowledging him. "You can call me, Jasper! What do you two go by?" he asked, offering to shake each of there hands. Then, he clapped and jogged backwards across the library's floor. "Let's get to it then! Lapis! I choose you!!"
The Omanyte appeared in the front of the arena, wiggling its blue tentacles. "You first! Lapis's got great defense, so I'm confident he'll stand up to a blow!"

It was a relief to hear that he didn't have to schedule his gym battles ahead of time. There was a world to save, he couldn't wait a week just so that the gym leader could write him into his planner. "Cameron. My friend is Zachary, he's a researcher. He's a little bit quiet, so don't mind him," the trainer explained, his head shaking. Zach wouldn't get in the way, and he was only there to watch and study the Pokemon who appeared in battle.
Cameron let loose a Pokeball, a small, blue squishy emerging as she jumped forward into the arena. The Wooper let out a loud and excited shrill as she charged forward. She was huffing and puffing until, once she felt close enough, she skid to a halt. She took in a deep breath and let loose a Mud Bomb, which she spat from her mouth at the crustacean.
As expected, Cameron introduced the rather quiet male. So he only nodded to the gym leader. Keeping the snivy safe in his lap, Zach watched the pair exchange words, then bring forth their contenders. He watched with curious eyes, that dex soon in his hands and ready to take in all the information he could. This was an interesting way to learn, and it helped both him and his friend out. boonecold volume

Charlotte Dodged the constrict, jumping into the air with a victorious fist pump- only with her tail. She lacked hands.
"Likewise. We've only just begun." Cameron nodded his head, knowing full well that a battle against a gym leader was supposed to be no easy task. If they always lost to every trainer they met, then why were they picked for the position? Those were just Cameron's two cents. "Now, use that Double Kick."
The Wooper slid forward toward the Omanyte, swinging a kick at the shellfish and spinning, to kick again with the other foot. She tried to aim her every hit for that Omanyte's funny looking face. What could would come from kicking in a fossilized shell?

Each kick whacked the squishy little shell Pokemon in the face. Hurt, it withdrew momentarily into its shell only to leap out with crazed tentacles and attempt a second contrict.
Jasper nodded - this one was smart. "A good offense is a strong defense! Good strategy there!"

Cameron cared more for offense than he ever did for defense. The majority of his Pokemon's attacks consisted of physical ones, rather than defensive. It would be his downfall one day, he was sure of it. But the faster he could wipe them out, he thought, the better. But Cameron didn't thank Jasper for the compliment. He was concentrating now.
Charlotte became tangled in the small tentacles grabbing hold of her limbs. She struggled, at first, then tried to spin herself around with a Tail Whip. Taking a deep breath, the Wooper shut her eyes tight and spat out a volley of Mod Shots.

In a valiant slither to the side, the omanyte once again avoided the mud. Its blue body seemed to fluoresce as it projected an aurora beam at its opponent.
Jasper folder his arms over his chest, judging the paragraphs of the wooper's fluency in battle. "I can make a suggestion - best to hit make a hit while your opponent is off balance!"

Charlotte fell to the floor. She flopped on her back, narrowly Dodging the aurora beam that flew over her head. With the help of her tail- the only arm-like appendage she owned- she was pushing herself back on her feet. Her large tongue stuck out of her mouth, taunting the enemy Omanyte.
She lunged forward with another Double Kick, her favorite move since her birth. It was what made her special compared the other Wooper around her.
Cameron was stroking the faint stubble on his jaw, his pose seeming relaxed as he narrowed his eyes in search of an opening. It would be hard to get a Pokemon who stayed so close to the ground with so many tentacles off balance.

She was knocked from her feet and onto the ground, letting loose a frustrated grunt. The Wooper didn't pick herself up just yet. She lifted her head, spitting out a Mud Bomb, before she got back up and started to pirouette around the opponent, looking for another opening.

Mud Bomb slammed into Lapis and it toppled over with fatigue. Jasper withdrew the Omanyte, plucking up another ball from his belt. "We're just getting started now."

Wooper stared wide eyed at the bird, watching it and giving out a menacing grin. A new opponent. A much stronger opponent too, she was sure. What if she couldn't win? Then, at least, she could weaken the birdbrain down for her follower.
Charlotte charged, spinning her body out of the bite's way in a Dodge, then letting loose her canon. She gargled then spat forth a spray of her Water Gun. Then, with the aid of her ATTACK BOOST, she launched herself into the air and spun her body with a Double Kick.
Cameron had his hand on his hip, resting awfully close to the other Pokeball he had at the ready. He was unsure how large of a beating his Wooper could take from the bird. But he knew she'd fight until she lost consciousness.
