This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

decima is designed to keep everything, living and non-living, away; the poisonous smog coats everything in a sticky layer of toxin, eating away at wood and slowly corroding metal. even the air is hazardous to breathe, and the gas mask delilah has over her face does nothing to keep her uneasiness at bay.
this is not a place she wants to be.
delilah enters the gym, receiving wary glances from the poison-type trainers. "melchior." she is not here to fool around.
"Yes," is all that a burgundy-haired man in shades says. He pushes the sunglasses up his nose bridge, eyes secretly flashing behind the coated lenses. He respects that Delilah has braved the miasmas that shroud Decima, and he also sort of appreciates that she's managed to pick her way through the maze of toxic spikes in the gym to get to him. The least he can do is offer her a battle.
"Single battle, three Pokémon," he says, cutting right to the chase. It isn't like Melchior to waste time, anyways. He unclips a Pokéball from his belt, tossing it up and down in his palm. Today, he seems particularly restless, and though while Delilah appears uneasy, Melchior's own face reveals nothing. Even if he was not the one with the gas mask on, it was difficult to tell what was on the gym leader's mind.
The Pokéball leaps into the air, and out comes a Scolipede.
Gallade. Well then. Looks like Melchior had some work cut out for him. The Pokémon stomps on the ground, raising dangerous spikes to go along with the already-toxic ones on the field. The Scolipede stomps harder, and the floor of the gym quakes.
Melchior does not comment.

what is it with gym leaders and annoying pokemon; jasper wasn't that bad, but the woman has developed an intense dislike of both ghost and dark pokemon -- she wonders if she'll develop similar aversions as time passes.

The Gallade's bladed arm smashes into the Scolipede again. Belladonna groans at the blow. Melchior, on the other hand, is utterly unamused. This battle was getting very repetitive. He'd much rather be out and about in Decima Town pounding at Scourge or patrolling the borders of the town.
Melchior does sense that Belladonna probably doesn't have much time left. Time to wreak as much havoc with the time he's been handed, then.

Melchior still appears to be incredibly unamused behind his shades. His mind is elsewhere, yet his battling style remains fluid. He does not speak to his Pokémon. They already know what to do and what is expected of them.
The Scolipede falls at Melchior's feet. The man does not budge an inch. He simply returns the large centipede Pokémon to its Pokéball before sending a Nidoking out to face the steel-fighting type Pokémon.
