This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

there's a ruffling noise, like paper and shelving pressing against one another, and then he crawls out of a stack of toppled over books, shooting up like a beanstalk as he gets to his feet.
"i'm jasper!" he exclaimed, re-adjusting his glasses. they'd gotten knocked crooked in--whatever had happened that lead to him being buried under the books. he wasn't going to explain it unless she asked. he hoped she didn't.
"it's a pleasure--a real pleasure to meet you. always happy to see a new challenger. haven't gotten one in a while. may i ask your name?"
jasper... is nothing like she's expected. truthfully, she didn't know what she was expecting when she walked through the gym doors. certainly not a man crawling out of a stack of books, but she's seen odder things.
"i'm katherine d'verte, from sol. why haven't you had many challenger's lately?" she asks instead, hand on her hip. you'd think that the first gym leader would have a lot, from swarming eos newbies.
...although with the way that eos is complaining about the lack of recruits, she shouldn't find it surprising.
"oh, you know. eos trainers are really the bulk of those out and about these days, and they're often too busy for me. and i don't really get many league challengers anymore. the scourge have put a bit of a damper on things."
he rubbed his hands together excitedly and beamed at katherine.
"good name! good solid name. seems familiar, somehow. do you have any siblings? anyway, i'm rambling. which are you? eos or league? or you could be both, i assume."
verte raises an eyebrow, but doesn't comment. "no, not any that you'd know, anywhow," she says instead. "eos, really, and just starting out. i'd like to have at least one badge under my belt before i head out and start fighting scourge." if there was something that verte lived by, it was always "be prepared." it was right up there next to "survive."
verte takes her hand off her hip and rolls her shoulders. "so, you got time for a challenger like me?" if he doesn't, she'll just come back later after training her pokemon. might end up better that way, actually.
and then they were off. the man sent out a fossil pokemon - it wasn't surprising, she's been warned, after all - and in response verte sends out athena. the zorua shakes herself, glances at her trainer, then squares off against the omanyte.
"i might, with either a psychic or flying secondary. or at the very least keep everything even enough so that i don't get my ass kicked through type disadvantage."
