This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

a magnificent failure. ignatius settled down beside sabina and decided to take over before she flipped the entire place on heads-over-heels in a fit of anger. he took the cards and tried to recall what she had written down in the formula, and applied it the best he could to his hand.

"what else do you suggest as a replacement for amberwell water?"
the dealer almost at once had to slide a third of the chips sabina had lost back to ignatius. he looked like he wanted to strangle both of them, but alas there were bouncers every few feet. unless he lost the house a ton of money, such an action probably wouldn't be condoned.
sabina propped her face up on her fist and settled for watching ignatius win.
"i'd like to examine the gene structures of vaccinated pokemon, focus on extracting them to self-replicate and rewrite the genes of non-vaccinated pokemon. if the vaccination can be inherited, there's no reason it shouldn't work, in theory."
"a typical vaccine does, but i suspect that the eos "vaccination" is only such in name only. No inherited immunization from mother to child should be lifelong. At most, the children of vaccinated pokemon should be safe only for a handful of months. And yet that isn't the case, obviously. The physical changes induced by the EOS vaccine differ drastically from traditional vaccination properties as well."
She frowned.
"Not like EOS lets anyone get a look at their precious vaccine that isn't with the program, of course. They guard it worse than gold. Which only makes me think more that something must be up with it."
"it's a virus that you carry with yourself for life. a pokémon gets infected by it, and it prevents them from being harmed by the hadean virus. to combat a virus, they simply made another virus. some people have started calling it the eos virus instead of the eos vaccine, you know."
much like her attempts at poker domination, sabina watched her ideas of some massive eos conspiracy slip through her fingers.
"the boring answer, i suppose, but it makes sense. at least i can still work on an independent cure, and then publish the knowledge. no need to let EOS have all the fun."
ignatius chuckled. "i wish you luck, sabina. you would be able to make an independent cure, yes. i wonder how much it would cost. join me at the bar?" he said, collecting his winnings.
she shrugged at the idea of cost. her family and private backers had always thrown any amount of money she wanted at her projects, and she assumed they always would.
