This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

J didn't often come to the dream world. after agreeing to meet up with thalia in the same deserted bar in the middle of mt aurae, they had both agreed to knock themselves out through dubious means. a moment later, J found himself in the middle of the dream world, on the slopes of a snowy mountain.
it reminded him of batin on the snow slopes and food he couldn't really eat.
J plucked his shield out of thin air, and it hummed lowly in his grasp. the anvil weapon had always been attuned to him. he waited around for thalia.
thalia arrived on J's heels only a few dozen feet away, shivering as she crunched her way over through the snow.
"ready?" she asked, as she imagined herself up a parka to match his. the dream world was a wonderful place, sometimes.
her own weapon was unfamiliar to J, most likely. she had not acquired it on any of their adventures: a sky blue lance was strapped across her back. it was nearly as long as thalia was tall, but handling such a weapon was no longer a problem for her.
after thalia could handle a one-handed three-section staff, J was certain that thalia could handle whatever else came her way. the anvil had an uncanny ability to make people make the most of what they had.
J gave her a nod. "let's do this," he said, before being interrupted by a herd of sawsbuck passing by. the trainer exhaled.
this was certainly shaping up to be an adventure like their past ones. he raised his shield, and watched them.
thalia thought of a childhood spent more like a wild animal than a human girl and shivered again, this time from excitement. she flashed a broad smile at him.
"i'm a cultured person," said J, but even to his ears it sounded too much like a joke. (but he was. he played music, was supposed to make his début and all.) "but yes, i have."
he stared at the eleven sawsbuck, then nodded at thalia.

the sawsbuck had one of its legs taken right out from under it. it fell over in the snow, and the rest of the herd seemed to move on without knowing what had happened.
"cool," said J, nodding before he flung his shield at one of the sawsbuck.

J caught his shield as it returned to his grasp. he watched the herd of sawsbuck continue moving along as if nothing had happened. he squinted at them.
"should we keep attacking? they seem rather calm," said J, which was ironic considering how the snow was splattered with blood and dead sawsbuck.
"no!" a blast of ice came out of nowhere, interrupting thalia's attempt to kill herself and J. shameelsa cheerily stepped out before them atop a flight of stairs made out of ice.
"this is absurd, even for you," thalia said. she hadn't thought anything could top the hijinks of ragnarok and roll. if only. "why. why are you bothering us?"
"because it's only natural to speak to people you know," said shameelsa with a sagely nod. "and i believe we're firm acquaintances by now. i'm glad we're no longer speaking in kohaku sign language. i'm free from the confines of the real world, you see."
shameelsa laughed, twirling about in his new clothes and sending sprays of snowflakes all over thalia and J like some sort of replacement confetti.
J brushed off the frost from his parka, and stared up at shamees.
