This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

isaac glanced at clavier. wasn't it a dragon-type? the boy wondered if grayson's previous interest in clavier indicated that he would have liked to cook something for it, but he held his tongue. he knew nothing of crepes, after all. his cooking skills hadn't quite extended to dessert. (most of their meals had been simple, but nutritious ones.)
"dragon-types ..." he said, just to fill in the silence, and clavier exhaled rather loudly -- almost indicatively, the dragon's stomach growled. the ranger's gaze snapped to his partner, and he half-grinned, half-grimaced. "that wasn't very polite, clavier."

a genuine laugh escaped grayson, watching the two interact. they were interesting, to say the least. he was a little curious how the ranger-partner dynamic worked, but knew not to intrude. "if he's hungry i wouldn't mind cooking something for him." nana squeaked indignantly, beating her paws against grayson's chest. "okay, fine, i'll make something for you too."
back to the topic of isaac himself, however, grayson was awkward once more. "er... if you're hungry you can get something too. i mean, i guess i can make something for you too. if you want." mostly he was looking forward to feeding the axew, but... isaac could come along too. (regrettably, in grayson's mind)
isaac blinked, and then nodded at grayson. it was fine to go along with grayson then, since he didn't seem to mind the intrusion. clavier felt sheepish for his stomach's sudden outburst, and glanced towards isaac for word of agreement.
"i'm fine, really," isaac said as he shook his head, "you can feed clavier if you'd like." clavier narrowed its eyes. "he wants me to go along too."
clavier flashed grayson a thumbs-up, but its expression was serious. a ranger was never separated from its partner!

meanwhile, king was busy being freaked out by the exclamation point and lack of stoic stubbornness and soulless sarcasm.
grayson led the way to a pokemon centre, taking use of the small kitchen that was there for visitors. ingredients were provided to by the centre, knowing that travellers needed all the energy the could get, especially those fighting the scourge. he pulled out a multitude of ingredients, nana helpfully blinded him with her paws occasionally. "stop that." he murmured, gently pushing her back up on his head. he completely disregarded isaac while he cooked, happy to not talk to anyone while he did so.
isaac watched on eagerly as grayson got the necessary stuff ready to cook in the pokémon center. the equipment ready was adequate, though not the best; the ranger stood alongside clavier as grayson busied himself cooking. isaac offered to take nana off grayson's hands, as it seemed to get in the way more often than not.
