This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"we managed." J decided to leave the subject at that; for some reason, he could not recall what exactly had happened during the gym battle. it was all like a dream, a swift dream he could not recall all at once. his team, however, had indeed managed to get the better of jasper even though it took a while.
(obviously i am lying but time-wise, he would have had his challenge over and done)
"helped out a friend," said J simply. it was the truth, or at least, a part of the truth -- J didn't know where or how he had came to the decision to agree to fight jasper, but he ultimately had, while neo got her scans of the gym leader's pokémon. it had been a win-win situation for the duo. "did he give you a hard time?"
"i have mostly steel-types," said J, "they weren't an issue most of the time. skarmory, surprisingly, doesn't take super-effective damage from rock slide."
"i bet they aren't willing to risk it. probably think they're doing a noble duty by testing trainers to see if they're worthy of fighting scourge, and by night they do whatever strikes their fancy. they're never at risk; that's for us trainers."
"which gyms before all this started? back before you were an eos grunt. i kind of miss how...simple it used to be. when facing a gym leader didn't mean there was a nagging voice in the back of your head about why aren't they on the front lines?"
"wouldn't put it past the kid with a father complex at what, twenty-four?" J then realized that he was younger than falkner, and found thalia's words more amusing than before. "did clair throw you a tantrum?"
