This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

mood: determined notes: i dunno what i'm doin wheeeee lol
She had a point, even if Nima didn’t want to admit it. Fine, until the end of the battle then. He’d never wanted things to end so quickly before! Well, back to his decision to just go all out. His pokemon were new to this, as was he, and it wasn’t as though he had thought of any good tactics. Even if he had, his pokemon did not have the moves necessary to pull off anything spectacular.
The psywave cut through the smoke, but it missed Zooka by a fair margin. “Alright, keep up the smokescreen, and then try another surf!” Their makeshift battlefield remained covered in a black curtain, and the tiny horsea whipped up yet another massive wave of water.
The surf struck a second time--again dousing Neo, who clenched her jaw and generally did her best impression of a wet purugly--and the solosis tumbled away with it, caught in the wave and... disappearing... somewhere. She turned to look through the trees as well she could, but the surf's water could've carried Phoebe off anywhere.
"Uh," Neo said, because she wasn't entirely too sure what to do in this instance. Were you allowed to go off to find your pokemon again? "Let's count that as yours. I'll send one of mine after her in case she's unconscious."
She released Icarus, the gyrados, and Themis, the scraggy. "Icarus? We've lost a friend--a friend and a valuable ally," she emphasized because Icarus was already radiating waves of I Don't Care, 'and since the forest is slightly flooded right now, perhaps it would be wise for a water pokemon to go on a valiant quest to save a companion?"
Icarus looked like he knew his strings were being pulled. He roared against the idea of fetching a little psychic thing--but the solosis was kind, and as a magikarp, he had experience with tough waves. Grumpily, he turned to head off in the shallow water to find Phoebe.
To the scraggy, she said, "Your turn to fight. Faint attack and then sand attack."
Themis looked at her and made a gesture to the wet ground--as if to say, Where do you see any sand?
….well. That was…unexpected. Nima was feeling increasingly bad. Gastly was floating in the pool and the solosis had been swept away…and the researcher was sopping wet. This was…a really strange thing to do. Did trainers really do this sort of thing on a regular basis?? “U-Um…okay…” What else was he supposed to say? He shuffled a bit while Neo took care of things. What exactly was up with the gyarados? Was all that just to get it motivated? She must…have a difficult time with him… Back to the battle…er…oh man.
Pulling out his pokedex, he scanned the scraggy. Meanwhile the attack missed Zooka thanks to the thick layer of smoke, but the parting of the black clouds caused leer to catch him off guard. Ah shoot… “Zooka, use water gun!”
The water gun caught scraggy in the face (which splashed onto Neo, but at this point, she wasn't going to get any more drenched), and apparently being squirted in the face with a blast of water was what it took for the lizard pokemon to conjure up a sand attack by unloading the contents of his baggy pants.
"That I am very, very sorry for," Neo said quickly.
Not done yet, nor very embarrassed, Themis rushed in for a faint attack on the horsea.
Both Nima and Zooka sputtered and spat, and being the one with hands, Nima was quick to swat sand out of his face. What the…who knows where that’s been hiding?? He didn’t want sand from the body crevices of a pokemon all over him! At least this time Neo actually apologized, but Nima still looked understandably horrified. Still trying to get sand out of his face, and without the help of hands, it was far more difficult. Thus he took the faint attack rather hard, rolling head over tail backward…and right into the Amberwell.
…
“…I…is this how…this normally goes…?” Zooka came up sputtering and shaking his head, and he let out a somewhat miffed cry. At this point, he could probably let Zooka keep battling but…well… “Um Zooka, go ahead and just stay there. Um…let’s move on…” Awkwardly, he withdrew another pokeball and released Raijin the blitzle. “Raijin! Use charge and then shock wave!”
mood: baffled notes: this is the weirdest battle ever lmao
Even if this was more extreme than usual (and extreme how he couldn’t quite pinpoint), this was bizarre no matter how you looked at it. How did people get so zealous about battling? Everything about this was just plain awkward…there was scraggy-body-sand in his mouth for crying out loud!
Remarkably agile after all his playtime with a ponyta, Raijin dodged the incoming faint attack with ease, turning on the enemy pokemon with the gusto the two opposing researchers lacked. “Now, quick attack!”
Themis dodge rolled the quick attack, tumbling around the blitzle's four legs and punted it with a low kick.
At this time, Icarus the gyrados chose to show up again, a dazed but otherwise alright solosis sitting atop his angry head. He dumped Phoebe onto the Amberwell.
He was not meant to be a chauffeur. This was most distressing. He wanted to fight for the supremacy of the magikarp species, not pull solosis out of trees.
He turned to Raijin, the nearest pokemon that he was pretty certain he could attack without Neo docking him of his favorite pokechow flavors. He roared.
"Wait your turn," she said, calmly recalling him to his pokeball in a ray of red light.
Raijin grunted at the kick, stumbling away and tossing his head angrily with a crack of electricity. How dare that little pipsqueak kick him! He was a majestic creature who could probably quash it under one hoof!
For his part, Nima was glad to see the solosis ok…although a giant red gyarados roaring at him was less than inviting. He swallowed hard, but refused to look afraid. Raijin, being an electric type, just snorted at the overgrown fish before it was withdrawn.
“Ok, another combo of charge and shock wave Raijin!” With a cry the thunder horse pokemon drew electricity into himself, and then unleashed it in a burst at the scrappy little opponent.
After that last shock wave, the scraggy's breathing was shallow and quick, and he paused for a rest. "That's probably enough, Themis," Neo said, and the pokemon seemed disappointed with himself but content to return.
She considered the rest of her pokemon. She wasn't bringing out Icarus until he simmered down--probably meaning he would be out last of them all. The wynaut couldn't really fight (better than Icarus was at a magikarp though), but her blitzle could. She released Hyperion, who was young but luckily this wasn't entirely his first rodeo.
Granted, it turned out Hyperion's first instinct upon seeing another blitzle was to trot up to it and give it a good nuzzle.
"When you're done with that, Hyperion? This is a battle. You remember how to thunder wave? And then quick attack."
Oh, yeah, he remembered how to thunder wave. You did it by nuzzling really ferociously until sparks started flying. From the videos Neo had shown Hyperion, he knew that wasn't really how it was done, but his way worked! And quick attack was an extra fierce nuzzle. When the young blitzle did it from point blank range, it waas more like a peck.
"He's young. He's allowed to have his fun," Neo said as maybe an explanation and partially a defense.
mood: baffled notes: lol we're just going to derp around, and get exp for it
Raijin was ready to continue, but the scraggy was apparently done for now. The blitzle snorted and stomped his foot mildly. He was pretty sure this wasn’t how battles normally should go…he glanced over at Nima, but his person clearly wasn’t any more sure than he was. At this point Nima was ready to just go with the flow and not try and think too hard on whatever was going on here, ahaha… Speaking of.
Raijin was about to back peddle something fierce as the other blitzle approached him, but then…nuzzling?? He looked around as if hoping somebody would give him an idea of how to respond. Should he attack him…? It seemed like a pretty mean thing to do, when the other blitzle was being so nice…it’d be like attacking Phoenix! That guy liked to nuzzle too. If he thought he was uncomfortable then, he was in for a shock. And not even a literal one.
Since, you know, he just got kissed. He gave the blitzle equivalent of a blush, and then reared up before making a mad dash for Nima. Skidding around, he ended up behind his trainer, hiding his face. Nima just blinked slowly. “I…um…w-well.” This would normally be a lot more amusing if things weren’t already so bizarre. He gave Raijin a reassuring pat, and then released Phoenix. The ponyta tossed his head excitedly, flames flickering. “Phoenix, use tail whip, then ember!”
The ponyta wagged his tail cutely at Hyperion, before giving a happy neigh and spitting little balls of flame at the blitzle. They…didn’t really seem to be aimed for him though, more like a game than an attack.
Neo didn't expect Hyperion's attack to be super effective.
Hyperion neighed just as happily as the ponyta at the tail whip--and then suddenly great balls of fire! Eeee!
"Hyperion--try dodging them!" This was not an amazing strategy. Hyperion wasn't completely green, but he was pretty close. He couldn't run forever. Hell, he probably couldn't run all that much longer.
The blitzle tried to dodge, got caught up on his own feet, tumbled to the ground in an ungainly mess as embers whizzed by. Getting back up was a debacle as the blitzle was so young that sometimes he forgot how to feet.
Finally, after four legs were done flailing, he stood again. "Thunder wave?" Neo suggested, because he only had two attacks, and quite frankly, they were both about the same in practice.
Hyperion went in for another staticky cuddle barrage.
mood: amused notes: is this even a battle any more!? lmfao!
Phoenix looked rather worried when the poor little blitzle fell all over himself. Having long legs wasn’t always easy! They could be kind of tough to get the hang of. Soon the ponyta was on the receiving end of a staticky nuzzling, and he shivered as electricity made his fur prickle and stand on end. But it was kind of tickly too! Just like Raijin! Nickering happily, Phoenix nuzzled Hyperion right back, blue flames flickering brightly with glee.
At this point, Nima had started giggling. This was just so absurd, but also strangely fun. He’d been hesitant to enjoy himself, considering how things had started out, but…so far, it seemed like nothing but really funny things had happened. Everyone was being so…goofy! “Um, hehe, excuse me…I don’t know but, I feel kind of bad having Phoenix hurt him…I mean, they seem to be getting along really well?”
"...We could call it a draw," Neo agreed, more or less. "Hyperion will fight if I ask it of him, and he fights with chivalry, but I don't like dictating what he should do when he's this young. It looks like he only wants to play."
She added, "It's also worth noting that Icarus, that gyrados, is my last remaining pokemon, and I wouldn't want to sic him on your ponyta. ...I wouldn't want to sic him on most pokemon, quite frankly."
This had been the most bizarre of battles. It probably wouldn't be good to end it with the most violent of pokemon.
mood: uncertain notes: lol up to you if we keep the battle going or not!
Letting the two of them play sounded like a much better idea than having them battle. Maybe when both were a little bit more…competent? That way they could have a friendly spar, and not possibly accidentally really hurt one another. At the mention of the gyarados, Nima shivered a little in memory of it. Well, that was…unpleasant. But he’d not had a chance to scan that pokemon… “Well…I think Raijin’s probably the only one who’d even want to try.” The blitzle perked up from behind him, having been watching his best friend play with a different blitzle all this time. He wasn’t sure how he felt about that Hyperion fellow…but getting to do a real battle sounded way better than being smooched by random pokemon!! “If not, well…I’d still like to scan Icarus if that’s alright?”
