This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

the forest was a blissful cove for grayson, finding not that many people around. even when there were, grayson simply climbed up into a tree for some relaxing silence among the leaves. for now however, he was exploring and trying to find a way out. the forest was lovely and all, but he did require to make some progress.
along the way he might as well try to get some training done. he looked at the pokeballs in hand, figuring ris and stala should probably get training the most. then again... their purpose was... elsewhere.

"tackle," the trainer said for the umpteenth time as dust rushed towards a caterpie, before being caught in its sticky webbing that was string shot. okay, maybe that didn't work out so well. not wanting his pokémon to suffer more harm, he recalled the aron, and sent wing out to finish the job.
the skarmory had caterpie for breakfast, needless to say. J returned wing to safety, and proceeded on in the forest. the forest was large, and he was sure that he had backtracked more than a few times, intentionally or otherwise. he glanced around himself, looking for signposts of any sort, then lamented the fact that he had no nosepass-compass to aid his travelling.
he glanced up, and to J's surprise, he saw someone on a tree.
"..." oh. the words didn't quite come from his throat, though.

a face looked directly up at his right as grayson was looking down. "... hello." he said reluctantly, having looked forward to the silence. grayson climbed down from the tree, nana holding on tighter. "apologies if i startled you." he didn't want to waste time on conversation now.
grayson had places to be, things to do! aka getting the hell out of the forest and making his way further along. however, some little pipsqueak inside his pokeball had different ideas, as a poliwag exploded out with an excitd wiggle. "stop attacking people." he scolded, reaching out to pull it back in.
a poliwag had somehow leapt out of its confines, and J reacted immediately. his trainer's instincts kicked in, and he released a pokémon from its sphere. unluckily for J, it was dust, and trainer was sure that the type disadvantage would be crippling. the aron stared at the poliwag as it took the blow, but did not act as no orders were given.
"... sorry," J said, looking from dust to the tadpole pokémon.

"not at all, it's my fault." grayson murmured, crouching down to call back the poliwag. however, it seemed adamant to stay out and battle. he sighed. "well... battle? nothing serious, just a little sparring?"
he was tired, and wanted his peace and quiet back. clearly with the poliwag, it wasn't going to happen.
J scratched his neck. really, now? an aron against a poliwag was hardly a fair match, but it would seem that the poliwag wouldn't settle for anything else.
"the sacrifices we make for pokémon ..." J said, sighing as dust glanced at him expectantly. "nothing serious." it was good to reaffirm their stance; nothing serious, just a friendly match that could probably be stopped when either party called it done.
dust stared at the tadpole pokémon curiously, unaware of the poliwag's potential in beating the crap out of its metallic ass.

and thus was the problem that although poliwag was water type, it couldn't use any water type moves yet. well, darn. "ice ball." grayson called. it was... a bad choice against an aron but well. either that or spray it with some water that wouldn't do any damage. it would just give it a little shower.
the poliwag formed a quick ball of ice, shooting it forward with a slap of the tail.
dust blinked, opening its eyes to see a chunk of ice hurtling its way. it yelped as the ball struck it on its head, and for a moment, all dust saw was stars.
J too, was seeing nothing but a disoriented aron for a while. "dust, you okay?" he asked, out of concern; the aron hadn't been a natural battler, and needed a push to retaliate. it was happy to soak up damage before deciding to do something most of the time, which really, wasn't good in the face of scourge.
"we've practiced this. tackle."
at the sound of a familiar word, dust nodded and started running towards the tadpole, eager to knock it over like a bowling pin. if anything, it was aware of its weight.

wow, the ice ball worked. grayson smiled as ris did a little dance, bouncing up and down. however, at the order of the tackle, grayson was alert once more. "keep bouncing around, ris. use water sport to make the ground slippery!"
the poliwag bounced around in a circle, avoiding the aron's charge. soon afterwards, water rained down on the area from ris's mouth. the soil grew soggy and slippery, small puddles forming around the close vicinity. "all right, let's go for an ice ball again." it would take a little longer, but would be stronger.
ris, of course, looked completely delighted as she began to form the ball of ice at her mouth. surprised she didn't fall down to be honest.
even though the order came swift and fast, dust had no opportunity to avoid the incoming ball because of the slippery earth. it fell face-first onto the ground, the following ice ball crashing unto it harshly. the aron glanced around, before picking itself up to go for another tackle at the poliwag.

this time, ris went flying a little as she was hit by the aron's head. owch. the poliwag picked herself up after a moment, tail wagging. "ice ball, quick as you can." it wasn't particularly quick, but ris tried her best. the huge hunk of ice was shot straight towards the aron, grayson praying that the damage would start to pile up.
the aron dodged the ice ball attack thanks to the slippery ground, which ris had previously made with water sport. however, as it slipped and slid, it went too far away from the poliwag to attack it, and as a result, dust had to cart his ass all the way back to the clearing.

ris began generating another ice ball right after the other, given plenty of time with aron having to drag itself back. a much larger ice ball charged in the air, firing at the aron once he had come back into the clearing.
the aron decided to barrel roll to avoid the ice ball, but it also ended up rolling straight into the ball soon after. dust shivered from the cold, and stared at the poliwag, then back at J.

aaaaand pow! ris went flying, sprawled out on the ground shortly after with spacey eyes. grayson moved to pick up the tadpole, patting it on the head a few times with a few whispered encouragements. "thanks for the battle." he said honestly, and nana chirped her own little agreement. ris tried her best... although it was a bad matchup. alas.
