This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

rome felt something harsh smack against the back of his head as the tropius appeared. it was a chip of one of the stalactites from the ceilings. he had been lucky that it was not sharp. the tropius must have accidentally knocked one of them as he struggled to fit within the small area. it was a sight that the scientist would have normally laughed at, had it not been for what struck him. the pain was a tad more concerning. his head held everything! it was important not to lose even a little of those brain cells (even if he did drink as much as he wished when the occasion called for it).
his pokedex was still out, pointed at them. the data instantly collected as it scanned the large pokemon. the leaves and feathers. the sheer size and weight made it a wondrous thing to see flying. how could it? in a place like this, he would not be able to find the answer. he looked down to the pokedex and looked at their data. grass and flying. the fruit pokemon. it made him wonder, should he grab one of the bananas hanging around their neck to try? would it be as ripe as one from a tree?
"i wonder, would it be considered a form of cannibalism for them to consume a berry?" there was that smile again as he scanned the pokemon's form once more. "but perhaps you should return him. i've gotten my data --and you haven't shown me wing!" he hasn't forgotten that little tidbit yet. but this would be the last of the six. if j did not show him next, then he did not have him at all. a terribly disappointing thought.
purrloin gave an almost disapproving glance at how the other wasted the bit of fish he'd taken. never waste food, it doesn't come often in her experience. hunting in the wild was difficult, though it mattered little now that she had a trainer to rely on. she resumed finishing the fish with long strokes of her fanged tongue.
the tropius continued to lay flat on the cavern grounds, awkwardly-positioned due to its size. J could see that it wanted to get back into its pokéball as soon as possible. he waited for rome to scan the creature before he recalled it in a flash of red light. the tropius disappeared into the pokéball, grateful for the wider space (that was simulated) it was given in the capsule.
kazfiel watched on as the cat pokémon continued to eat the fish. it was never going to touch another slice of fish in its lifetime. not until a year later, or if there really was nothing but fish to eat at lake pax. maybe then it'd eat a mouthful and no more of that.
J enlarged one of his pokéballs - the last - and shook his head at rome. "unfortunately, this is not wing," he said, "but you may find this just as interesting." he threw it, and when the sphere returned to his grasp, he watched the creature that appeared from it. the yamask floated in mid-air, silently contemplating the people and pokémon around it.
it wasn't long until there was only bones left of the fish. she licked her paws in a tender, loving manner. it was one of her favorite meals in a while, a lot better than the scientist's pokemon food filled with whatever strange chemicals he liked adding to it. natural fish always had so much more flavor.
meanwhile, rome's expression tugged into a pout as he realized he wasn't going to see the skarmory anytime soon. he'd missed the ridiculous "little" guy. but what he did bring out was just as he promised. the pokemon was just as interesting. the pokedex, still at hand, scanned them as he looked to j.
he smirked. "it would be amusing if this were one of their victims." the scientist joked. a terrible one considering how he knew the other was. "you have my attention."
J said nothing, letting the yamask float in mid-air. letus was a strange creature. sometimes it talked to him, but at other times, it was merely a trick of the light and slight of hearing. the yamask glanced at its human, smiling faintly in the dimly-lit cave.
as soon as the cat finished its meal, kazfiel rose from its position by the lakeside. it approached the yamask, but J held the lizard back with a wave of his hand. the yamask had been highly unpredictable all its life; it had lived far longer than J had did, and had it not been for certain events in his past, the yamask may as well have been his guardian demon.
"i didn't bring him along," J said. those words alone carried weight; he had intentionally left letus behind in his room. he also remembered locking the pokéball away. his eyes glanced over the yamask; it was unvaccinated. clearly, it had slipped past eos's gaze, as they had vaccinated wing upon his arrival in kohaku.
letus glanced down at its mask, and slowly, it began to cry.
