This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Agate let out a slight sob, and Jasper grimaced at the sound of the Archen's teeth on the Aron's steel head. But they wouldn't give up that easily! Not now! "Careful there, Agate!" Jasper called from his side of the gym. "The Aron can't see you. You can do it!" The Archen's jaws released Dust, and he leaped back as the Pokémon flailed his metal claws. They raked across his belly, and he squawked in pain. He Leered at the Aron, before waltzing over to one of the many rocks in the gym.
Agate inspected the shards, and lifted one with his wing claws. He weighed it carefully in his hands, before lobbing it at Dust with a Rock Throw. He lifted another one, and sent it in the same direction as the last.
the aron grumbled something under its breath as agate finally let go of its skull. it opened its eyes, and saw a rock throw coming its way. it squealed, trying to run away before the rock thumped it on the back. "aaaaa," it whined before it stood up, the rock rolling off its back easily. it turned around to stare at the archen, before letting loose a metal claw.
Neo glanced at J, not entirely impressed by this battle thus far. "Why don't you just keep roaring and let them impale themselves on the stealth rock? Make sure the leer doesn't work next time."
Agate screeched as the Aron's steely claws dug into his wing. He flapped his flightless arms about with a rather angry expression on his face. "Stick with it, Agate!" Jasper called, to catch the prehistoric bird Pokémon's attention. It would be no good for him to lose his temper now, of all times! "Keep a level head and go in with a Quick Attack!" The Archen crowed, lunging at a blinding speed. He brandished his beak and claws, slamming into the Aron's side with a good old hit-and-run tactic. It was, however, a little less run and a little more hit.
"good point," J said to neo, and promptly utilized her strategy. "roar, dust. and then use metal claw again on whatever comes out next."
dust nodded, and took the quick attack searing its way. it grounded itself again and let loose a massive bellow up close, then got ready to use its claw-based technique.
This time, Agate let out an unearthly shriek as the Aron bellowed at loudly as it could. The Archen scuttled back to his trainer, scared off by such a beastly noise that J's Pokémon had made. He disappeared into his Pokéball. Jasper blinked as he felt a different capsule shudder, and out came Peridot again. She swung her head to and fro with a quizzical expression, wondering what on earth it had been that dragged her out. The rude answer came as Dust slashed at her with fortified claws. She groaned as the earlier Stealth Rocks bit into her feet, then hurled herself at the Aron with a Tackle. "Peridot, don't forget to use a Taunt too!" Jasper called, to which the Shieldon immediately puffed steam from her nostrils, cackling at the Aron.
dust stared at the shieldon. it honestly stared at it and frowned, before stamping about, enraged. earth power shook the gym again, and the ground came alive with energy.
Peridot chuckled to herself, amused by how frustrated the Aron was at itself. Perhaps it was a little nasty of her, but it gave the Pokémon some self confidence to roll out of the way of the waves of energy coming from the other Pokémon's footprints. Briefly, Jasper was worried that the ceiling may cave in, but he quickly recalled that the gym's foundation had withstood much heavier damage. A little battle wasn't anything to fret over. "All right, Peridot! How about you show us another one of your Rock Slides?" he called out, two hands cupped around his mouth. The Shieldon reared her head back, groaned, and stomped her own feet. More rocks from the walls came to life as they tumbled in the Aron's direction.
One Earth Power too much, and the Shieldon got what she deserved. The wave of Earth Power blasted her in her face. The dinosaur Pokémon let out a pained moan before slumping over onto her side. "You did good, Peridot," Jasper said to her as he returned the Pokémon to her capsule. He gave the Pokéball an affectionate rub, before beaming at J. "Hey, you're pretty good!" he exclaimed, before tossing Agate's Pokéball back into the air. The Pokémon growled as the Stealth Rock bit into his feet again. The ring of rocks was becoming rather problematic. "Agate, try another Double Team, then go in with a second Quick Attack!" Agate stomped his feet on the ground before lunging at the Aron. He was getting rather tired of this fight.
J wasn't sure what to say. being good at battling fell under the portfolio of a trainer, just like being good at breeding was to a breeder. he nodded, anyway, hoping that it would be a sufficient response.
dust stared at the archen as it emerged from its pokéball once again. it sighed, before allowing the quick attack from multiple angles to strike at it. it didn't hurt too much, but it was annoying after a while.
still under the effects of taunt, the apron had no choice but to use its (metal claw) against agate.
There were scratches and marks all over the Archen's feet from the Stealth Rock. Agate screeched as Dust's metallic claws dug into his shoulder. He flapped it about helplessly, tottered forward with a dizzy expression, then flopped flat on his face. Jasper looked on with eyes as round as saucers. "You beat me..." he mumbled, watching the arena carefully, then said with much more enthusiasm, "y-you beat me! Congrats, man, you beat me!" With that, he returned the exhausted Archen to his Pokéball, then scoped out the arena. "Wow, looks like we really did a mess here!" Grinning, he swiped at his nose again, while his other hand stashed his Pokéball away in his pocket. "Shake my hand, can you? Maybe some of your skill will rub off on me!"
"... what?" J said to jasper, slightly confused. what did shaking hands have to do with training skills? he did it, anyway. the more he questioned, he felt that he would not get anything substantial in response. "good challenge, though," he added as dust returned to his side and flopped over, tired.
Jasper grinned and gave the other man a firm handshake. "Yeah, that was a great battle!" he exclaimed. The rush he got from the Pokémon fight hadn't quite worn off. He folded his arms over his chest, looking rather satisfied at himself despite losing. Yes, this was a trainer of Eos who could be entrusted to fight Scourge and succeed. That was his job, after all, to test whether the trainers who came his way were ready. Perhaps that was an even more important job than tackling the Scourge himself.
"Oh, I almost forgot!" He reached into his pockets, fumbling about in them as he said a few "where is its"s. A few seconds later, he produced a flat, shiny, brown pin. "Aha, here we are!" Jasper took J's hand and pressed the Fossil Badge into the center of his palm. "Behold, the fossil badge! You deserve it, every bit!"
J felt vaguely disappointed when it was revealed that the fossil badge was not a fossil. he would have liked one; he had neither a shieldon nor an archen. he accepted the badge regardless and nodded at jasper.
