This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"Yeah, it's gotten pretty bad in Bellona Heights. I had to leave because I just didn't feel safe at all. It's all really fallen apart - before, it was an amazing city. ...Have you ever been there before?" A wave of home-sickness washed over the researcher, and she meticulously began to fiddle with her pokedex as if that would calm her.
Poor girl. Her hometown had been taken by the scourge and she'd had to leave town because of it. Emily frowned, watching Regina fiddle with her pokedex as if she'd suddenly become sad. Without thinking the trainer placed a hand on her shoulder and smiled.
"Hey, don't worry. I've never been there before but I promise to clean the whole place up just for you!" the torchic chirped happily in response. "And then you can show me all the wonders of your hometown!"

No one had ever said such a nice thing to Regina before. She tended to hoist her eyes into stoic, unemotional computer screens, coding unfriendliness in backslashes and curly brackets. Commands were left to her in the form of post-it notes on the wall behind her triple monitors. She looked at the trainer from behind her two square glasses, and her eyes actually became her soul for once. Her mouth parted a little as words thought themselves over in her mouth's mind (separate from her own, really) and then gave up into a smile.
"Yeah," she managed. "You know, I think you'll be the best of them. I've never met one like you before."
Them? What does that mean? Emily's smiled turned into a half-frown, as she showed her confusion. "Huh? I'm sorry, I don't think I get what you're saying..." Afterward she let out a light giggle, as if that would make everything better.
"But I am sorry for the loss of your hometown. I'm not from here so I can't really imagine how that must feel..."
"Of the trainers," Regina clarified. "Where are you from-?" she was glad to move on from discussing Nerio. She leaned in, with a happier, freer glint in her eye and a pretty grin on her lips. Emily had a big heart - and Regina's papa had told her trust people like that the most.
"Oh! Well thank you! But I'm really not as great as some people I've already met." Emily began waving a hand in the air to dismiss the statement. But she did take it as a compliment, and one could tell by the slight flush in her cheeks.
"I'm from the Kanto region, where Ask Ketchum himself was born!" As if that meant anything to those who lived in the Kohaku region.
"That's really far!" Regina laughed, running a hand through her hair. "Kanto? I've never heard of Ketchum... But Rocket would make the papers here. Are they as much trouble as they're said to be?" she asked.
"When you get to Nerio, look for me," she added, holding out her hand one last time.

Regina smiled and waved. "Meet me there, will you? It's nice to meet friends again these days. Must be off though. Gonna teach her how to tricks even Cypress's Sybil can't wrap her mind around! Thank you!"
The researcher then stepped off the trail, disappearing behind a big bush, her pokedex out and beeping to life.
