This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

it was one thing to explore ceres forest, and a completely different matter to traverse the caverns. isaac inhaled; he could feel the heat swarming his chest and burning his lungs. the place certainly wasn't one to be trifled with. he could see that clavier was already affected by the heat of the lava pools, but they had to push on or they'd never reach nerio.
"clavier, just a little more and it'll be over," isaac said in his most encouraging tone. they couldn't give up. (however, it was like telling someone not to think of an elephant -- they'd think of one instantly.) the ranger wiped sweat off his brow and gingerly scaled over a rock wall and landed on the other side. he waited for clavier to do the same, before catching it in his arms to soften the blow.
really, the axew was getting heavier by day ...
"you okay, clavier?"
the axew grunted something, which isaac understood as a 'yes, i am, but not for long' kind of statement. the boy nodded. they'd take a break soon.
Just his luck! By now, the Pansear had grown bored by the lack of "entertainment" passing through the volcano. There wasn't much to do around the volcanic depths, so he figured that he shouldn't be too surprised by the lack of action. Very few people dared to even toe the entrance of the ashen area.
So the Pansear was very pleased to see the lone ranger wandering through the place.
He rubbed his little paws together, giggling with glee, before he tumbled out easily from behind the rock wall Isaac and Clavier had scaled. How unfortunate that they couldn't swing right over it like him! The monkey Pokémon poked his tongue out, cartwheeling across the top of the wall just to spite the ranger and his partner.
the ranger glanced up, hearing chattering and the sound of something tumbling across the top of the wall. isaac blinked, seeing a pansear -- it couldn't be his assist, could it? he retrieved his styler, and raised it to summon the pansear, only to realize it didn't work. oh, so it wasn't the same? the pansear wasn't his assist then ...
something tapped the back of his leg, and isaac jumped. fire was already spouting from clavier's maw, and isaac turned around to focus on the thing. he saw a dratini, and cocked his head. "huh?" he glanced between the pansear and dragon-type. "clavier, stop. which one's the assist?"
the axew shrugged, but quickly identified the dratini as their assist. the pokémon wasn't native to di manes. "okay," the ranger said, "now let's see what we can do with the pansear."
hey, what's up? clavier yelled towards the pansear, cupping its mouth to transfer its voice better. the dratini slithered up to the ranger and axew, waiting patiently for orders.
Oh? What was that strange, shiny, red object in the ranger's hands? The Pansear's gaze was fixed upon Isaac's styler, and it suddenly occurred to him that he wanted the little contraption. So the monkey Pokémon leaped from the top of the wall with ease and grace, landing upon Isaac's shoulder. This was so much more fun than wandering about, lost in the caves.
Of course, by now, the Pokémon had convinced himself that he was not lost, simply on an adventure.
The Pansear gazed at Isaac with round eyes and an endearing smile, before swatting at the styler with the tip of his tail.
<Your little human's toy, can I play with it?> the Pokémon called back at Clavier.
toy? clavier frowned. isaac had none of those -- could it possibly mean the styler? that is no toy, pansear. it is a styler; he is a pokémon ranger. the axew was ready to knock some sense into the monkey if need be.
<Well of course it's a toy!> the monkey Pokémon exclaimed, clapping his little paws together with glee. <It's shiny and fun! It's very fun! Just look at it!> There was a wide grin stretched across the Pansear's face as the creature lunged at a blinding speed and grabbed at the ranger's styler.
<Mine, mine now!> he cried, cackling to himself as his fingers closed around the plastic piece of technology.
without his styler, the ranger no longer was a ranger. sa'di's hopes on him had disappeared at lightning-fast speed; clavier hissed, wishing they still had a pansear of their own to snare the other monkey at blinding speed. isaac was dumbfounded.
shit, he thought. who cared about not cursing or saying things delilah would have his head for -- he'd lost his styler, and that was a problem he had to solve himself. a ranger never fought wild pokémon unless they were scourge, this he'd promised sa'di. in his mind, sa'di was a better figure to trust than his siblings. (so much for being related by blood.)
the dratini nudged isaac. i can do something that won't hurt it, i promise.
what would that be, dragon rage? clavier asked the dratini.
no, it said, rolling its eyes, watch this. thunder wave, here i go!
a jolt of electricity shot forth from the dratini's tail as it sent it straight towards the pansear's way. it couldn't run if it was paralyzed, right?
"wait, what are you guys doing?!" isaac asked, frantic; he hadn't got much of the dragon-speak, and it wasn't until the thunder wave happened that he realized that they had agreed on attacking the monkey.
Now this, this was most definitely not fun. The monkey Pokémon screeched angrily as the Dratini aimed a Thunder Wave at him. The electricity coursed through his veins, halting his movements. It was especially frustrating for the creature, mostly because he prided himself on his nimble movements. The styler dropped right out of his hold, and he glared hard at the two dragon Pokémon.
<Hey! That's not fair!> he screeched, struggling to stomp a foot at them.
It was very upsetting. He could roast those silly dragons if he wanted, but not even his jaw was in proper condition due to the Thunder Wave, and nor could he move his arms to scratch at the Pokémon's eyes. He could sink his teeth into their tails too, if only he could move. His speech was slightly slurred from the electricity as he stood, mostly helpless.
what isaac thought as a thundershock attack had actually been a thunder wave, and he was relieved to see that the monkey wasn't going anywhere any time soon. electricity crackled at the tip of the dratini's tails as it glanced up at the pansear, ready to let loose another thunder wave if the pansear so much as showed signs of recovering from it.
"now, can you give my styler back, please?" the ranger asked, "there's another thunder wave waiting for you if you don't." isaac's eyes narrowed. if it wasn't for the fact that he couldn't scale the wall with ease, he would have went over to the monkey and tried to get his styler back.
<You stupid Pokémon!> the Pansear sneered. <Come and get it. Come and get it from me! Ahahaha!> The grin on the Pokémon's face spread wider and wider as he blew a raspberry in the direction of the Dratini and Axew. He glared at the young Pokémon Ranger and managed to flick his tail to and fro, as if taunting Isaac to come and get him.
And suddenly, he found that he could move his limbs once again. He felt quick on his feet. The Pansear giggled, tossing the styler to and fro between each hand. <Come and get it, come and get it!> The Pokémon chanted those four words over and over, yanking some twisted satisfaction from taunting the two dragons and the humans. How horrid it must have been for them to not be him. He could scale walls and bounce off of them as he pleased while they were stuck, tied to the earth.
How unfortunate.
The Pansear pulled a right eyelid down and stuck his tongue out at the three again.
despite its taunting, it hadn't stopped the pansear from doubling over and falling to the ground again as the paralysis took over. it wasn't fully recovered from the paralysis yet. dratini snorted at the foolishness of the pansear and glanced at clavier.
you climb up with your tusks and get it back. i don't think your human can do so. fine.
clavier shrugged, and started scaling the wall again. damn the heat though, the dragon felt as if it was about to pass out.
The fiery monkey Pokémon wiggled his toes and fingers at Clavier, as the Axew began to scale the wall. <Come and get it!> he screeched. <Just try to get it!> He told himself that it would not be long before he could cartwheel out of the silly dragon Pokémon's way again. But for now, he gazed helplessly at the styler, body frozen rigidly into place.
<So you think you're a good climber, do you? So you think you're coming to take my toy away? I'll just swipe it right back!>
The Pokémon let out a surprisingly monstrous cackle.
clavier managed to seize the styler off the ground. incensed, the dragon released a blast of draconic flames that would narrowly miss the pansear. say that again, and this hits your face, it said, i hope you enjoy being burnt, punk.
he tossed the styler to isaac. the ranger caught it, grateful that he wasn't going to lose it. clavier glared at the pansear before descending the wall again.
for good measure, dratini readied its thunder wave.
stay up there until you have a clearer mind, monkey, was all clavier said before dropping down from the wall and into isaac's arms.
<Not fair, not fair!> the Pansear screeched. <You've ruined my fun! Why did you do that!?> With that, upon the first telltale signs of feeling in his jaw, he launched an Incinerate in the Axew's direction. <Haha! Take that! Of course I've got a clear mind!>
But to its dismay, a second Thunder Wave hit him in the face, and he was frozen in position with one leg raised from the ground. He fell over onto his face and tumbled down, off the tall rock, and in front of Isaac's feet.
<I'm going to get you for this! I'm going to tell Mother! She'll be really angry at you, all of you!>
still gripping his styler, isaac decided to test out one of his ranger signs. he started to draw the sign for electric, as he turned towards one of the dark corridors of the caverns.
meanwhile, not wanting to see clavier get into a fight, dratini let loose its thunder wave technique. the axew watched on from below, calmly waiting for the ranger to finish his sign-drawing.
