This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

he was never a trainer, before heron and the scourge. he preferred to watch matches from a safe distance, analyzing them neatly the same way he might note the composition of a fine wine. he always preferred to break things down from a distance, make them understandable. controllable. and in the same vein, he always had a distaste for things that were easily broken. like any connoisseur, he wanted the holy grail, the ultimate riddle, the undefinable question. the scourge and this strange riolu that had become his were not that, but they were close, and akin to it in a way.
surveying the remains of pal park, arms crossed, he resisted the urge to reach up and prod at his mask. it was a practicality, and perhaps more importantly, it was a good story. at his side, heron crouched on his hindquarters, staring intently into the distance. focused on something his master wasn't aware of? zahir wouldn't doubt it. his hands still itched for the mask. he jammed them in his pockets instead, and looked up at the sky. there was some cloud cover rolling in, night coming. he wasn't an outdoors-man, he was a city boy, but even he could recognize looming thunderheads.
She spotted the riolu first, its coloration not at all like her own. Or rather, it was like her own, with patches of golden yellow, except this one was a dark gold, nearly burnished bronze.
Neo took out two pokeballs, and she spoke in a nigh inaudible whisper. "Leto. Phoebe." She threw each pokeball separately, each to land on either side of the agent and scourge duo. Pincer formation.
In a flash of red light, a haunter and a duosion appeared.
Neo wondered if it was rude to attack without warning. It probably was.
zahir looked at neo, and then her pokemon, with mild interest, and then slid out of the way of the three pokemon. the riolu preferred to handle his own fights, and besides, he was more interested in this bold green-haired trainer.
"i don't see many people out this far in scourge territory," he offered.

"I could say the same," Neo agreed, almost amicably. She'd need a bit more inflection and, indeed, good will for it to be genuinely amicable. "I've heard it's quite dangerous here, what with the scourge and all."
The battle continued, and Neo may not be a trainer, but she trusted her pokemon to get the job done without her constant intervention.

"personally," zahir said, "i find the scourge threat highly overrated. you just have to possess the right mentality."

"excuse me for a moment," zahir asked neo, and looked at the battle briefly before drawing a quick sign in the air. "he's young, he sometimes overestimates himself."
haunter dodged force palm. haunter used confuse ray.
"Give me time to gather first-hand evidence. Maybe after a few bouts I'll agree with you."
Neo considered stopping Zahir, reaching out and grabbing an arm maybe, before he could do anything, but what could he really do?
Turned out he could do quite a lot.
"Phoebe!" she cried out in warning. No use, the duosion went down, and Neo recalled the psychic pokemon. Face impassive, she replaced Phoebe with the wobbuffet.
She said to Zahir, "That is fucking impressive. Mneme, give them a good encore"
haunter dodged mist ball haunter was hit by force palm, ouch! haunter used confuse ray wobbuffet used safeguard for no apparent reason
...She hated to admit it, but if Leto went down, the rest of Neo's brilliant strategy in this battle revolved around sheer force. Fire blast the enemy down.
"Story? If you say so. We all believe in something. I believe in the human ability to devise a solution greater than our problems. What about you?"
Sighing, Neo released yet another pokemon in place of the haunter: Icarus. She was going to run out of pokemon at this rate. After that, then what? Punch Zahir in the face? Like that's ever worked for her in the past.

Neo went for the bold line of questioning: "Yeah? So what's your riolu's story?"

"his story is still happening as we speak. that's why i have to stick around and listen to it. you might as well ask me what my own story is? how could i tell you all of it, when i'm living it?"
gyrados dodged fusion bolt. gyrados took reversal and force palm. gyrados used surf. wobbuffet used destiny bond.
Neo normally spoke in a deadpan, neutrally unemotive, but now a slight chill wormed itself into her voice. "Won't you miss out on everyone else's stories if you stick around too long? How good can this story be? It's just a lot of murder. Where's the beginning, middle, and end?"
he wished he were sitting on a wall, so he could swing his legs. no walls around, though. poor knocked down pal park.

"murder, murder, that's what you see. i see something pretty different. who knows where the ending is going to be? maybe you'll tell it. maybe me. maybe we both sing kumbaya and hold hands at the end." he frowned. "the beginning, though, is in decima, if you must know."
