This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"it'd do nothing," iskander said, but batin had already pressed his hand against cocoon-yveltal. as expected, nothing happened except for the legendary absorbing more energy from the prism. the sun continued to dim until nothing more than a ring around the edge of the sun remained.
yveltal was growing stronger. its wings pulsed with the absorbed energy, and a low hum started reverberating throughout the tower.

Batin stepped backward as the hum cut through the air. Gently, underneath his palm, there had been a movement. The rustling of feathers, perhaps. A heartbeat thumping back into life.
Yveltal's wings burst open in a blaze of red. The purpose of the prism, it seemed, had been accomplished. Yveltal was awake. With a cry, the legendary pokemon's bright blue eyes flutter open and Batin smiles. With a slow wing beat, the pokemon stays level with the two humans.

briefly, iskander wondered what would have changed had it been ho-oh instead of yveltal. the dark legendary screeched, unfurling its wings amidst darkened bolts of light. the agent took a step backwards, hand raised before him to block out some of the light. despite the darkness of it all, it was still rather glaring.
yveltal hovered before the two of them, its head tilted and eyes keen. iskander smile slowly grew. he nudged batin lightly, and gave him a nod. they had come here to explore the ruins. what they had obtained not only was knowledge, but also the opportunity to be in the presence of a legendary creature.
its body gleamed a dull red; its power was limited, and the prism would not suffice after a while. it could, of course, drain the sun of its light, but that was not very preferable -- somehow, yveltal had read iskander's mind and turned to face him.
the gaze was now on batin, and then at neither of them. it was looking at the sun. it mumbled something in an ancient tongue -- iskander understood bits and pieces of it, but not the entire sentence.

Well, it hadn't tried to kill them or drain them of their life force yet. Batin supposed that the prism was keeping Yveltal content for now--he suspected that wouldn't last long. Yet, that didn't entirely explain the legendary pokemon's apparent placidity. Was it waiting for something?
It spoke. The temptation to ask Iskander if he had caught anything out of that was strong, but Batin resisted.

iskander glanced from batin to yveltal, just as the dual-type's eyes fell on the darker-haired one. sensing a pair of eyes upon him, iskander's gaze returned to yveltal. once again, the legendary mentioned the few words it knew the agent could understand -- 'face', 'child', 'power'. perfectly understandable, and almost a universal sentiment.
"they call us iskander and batin," he said, careful to keep his voice low and polite. he spoke in an ancient language -- the closest he could infer from yveltal's tongue. iskander was no linguist, however. he was incapable of saying anything more complicated than their own names, but yveltal seemed to be satiated by the answer.
the creature flapped its wings just once, kicking up darkened sand and dust in its wake.
'they call you that? strange names, child.'
its blue eyes gleamed.

Batin might not understand the language the two of them are speaking, but the sound of cracking tile is unmistakable. The floor gives way beneath them, and he starts to fall.

the drop below was not exactly unexpected. the loud sounds of the quartz floor cracking reached iskander's ears, and he braced himself. he fell faster than batin did, but amazingly enough, his fall was broken by a magic carpet -- batin dropped onto the carpet quietly next to him, and the agent laughed.
"that was fun."
yveltal removed itself from its perch, and made a beeline for the prism.

"Say what you like about us, but at least we're never boring."
The magic carpet arced after Yveltal's path, so the agents got a nice clear view of the legendary absorbing the prism. It shone with an unbearable intensity for a moment before fading back to a steady red glow.

"we should get some golden stars for this entire thing," said iskander as yveltal finished merging its core with the prism. it whirled upon them, wings and tail opened in its iconic Y formation. "yveltal," he addressed the legendary.
'you, child.' this time, it was a tongue that they all could understand; the prism seemed to change something within the dark-type. its eyes were on batin. 'what are the both of you?'
"Some might say we're evolved humans," Batin said, grateful they were all speaking a common language now. Now he could finally monologue to a legendary."Some might also say we're simply diseased. We carry a virus. We're hades agents."

yveltal glanced at batin, its blue eyes contemplative, and deep with a sort of energy. a red flame lurked behind its irises. 'it matters little. or perhaps not at all.' the legendary pokémon swooped under the carpet and emerged behind the duo. the carpet surged forward now, unhindered by obstacles.
yveltal continued to speak.
'you are like hansel and gretel.' a gust of wind blew. 'into a lair you venture, the first time you manage to return home, but the second time you do not.' yveltal paused, and time seemed to stop.

"A well-told story," Batin said. "But one that has taken many different shapes in the telling."
"Perhaps you are the children and we the witch. Perhaps you are the hapless father, torn between what is right and what is easy. Or perhaps we are Hansel and Gretel indeed, and you have wandered in from an entirely different story."
the ruins started to shatter, and the glyphs spun more violently. the legendary bird's emotions were closely tied to the prism now, and what little fluctuations it experienced reflected on the tower itself. rock and stone crumbled, giving way to more quartz -- perhaps, this tower was constructed entirely out of quartz and precious gemstones. the pedestal the prism was previously embedded in revealed its true self: a throne, carved out of blood-red ruby.
'indeed. i come from a different tale, but you two are most certainly hansel and gretel. my name is bashir, bringer of good news. your story will have a happy ending.'
that was certainly a revelation. if he was hansel and batin was gretel, then who was yveltal? iskander's mind set to work. this riddle had to be deciphered before they got anywhere else. batin's question had prompted a tilt of the head from yveltal, and a beat of its wings to demonstrate its displeasure and amusement.
"a good ending -- we are the protagonists," said iskander. with a nod, he added: "hansel and gretel met not the witch but instead, a white bird who guards a glowing tree and who comes to the aid of those who have come to pray."
yveltal hummed, and with a flourish, swooped down below iskander and batin to catch them. the magic carpet floated a feet or so below the legendary creature, much like a steed before a royal carriage.
'i am nothing but a simple bird who has come from heaven to strike down those who impede your paths. they will endure punishment for the rest of their lives.'
