The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

the spirit stared at thalia, before employing his knowledge of kohaku sign language to illustrate his story. J had no idea what it was going on about, but if thalia knew kohaku sign language, it sounded something like this:

As the mienshao hissed at her, Thalia seemed to remember J.
"He says he died," she told him. "And that's about all he seems to be willing to talk about. Not very helpful." That last sentence was punctuated with a pointed glance at the spirit.
shamees signed a firm 'no.' he also did not miss the pointed glance thalia gave him; he pretended not to see it.
J nodded. "he's obviously dead," he commented, "and not very helpful. yeah."
shamees signed for the mienshao to do something.

The mienshao, despite their distaste for Thalia's hideous pink fur, were polite hosts. They assembled a light repast of sandwiches and tea on silver trays and carried the meal over to offer to J and Thalia.
A dozen watercress sandwiches lay neatly piled on the platter for them.

"you're safe," said J, his eyes moving to the anvil as it suddenly gleamed silver.
shamees moved away from the surface from the anvil. the tray of sandwiches was completely eaten by the three of them. "luck was on your side," he signed to thalia.
