This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

ignatius hadn't known that sabina was fond of feline-type pokémon. he made a mental note to buy her something cat-related for the next time christmas rolled around. "thank you," he said, to both the researcher and her pokémon, and promptly scanned the cats. they all looked at him in a way that reminded him of spoilt children; ignatius wasn't keen on studying them further.
"a blood sample? seems like a modest request from you," he commented, before putting away his pokédex. ignatius rolled up a sleeve, and extended his hand to sabina. "what is this for?"
Sabina dug a vial of rubbing alcohol out of her pocket and rubbed a swathe of Ignatius's forearm clean, before gripping his wrist and sliding the needle in the median cubital vein. She counted one thrombosed, two thrombosed, three thrombosed in her head, until the syringe was full, and then slid the needle out.
"You are out in the field," she said. "Should you become infected, having a control sample of your bloodwork prior to infection would be immensely helpful."
"i have somehow become your guinea pig, it seems," he said, flexing his arm slightly after the needle was removed. "well, it's fine. i don't really mind." he unrolled his sleeve. "i'm not throwing myself out to die or to get infected on purpose, but if it comes, it comes. i'll accept fate."
he glanced at her. "you shouldn't be out here, either. none of your pokémon were vaccinated, and they'll turn on you if they get infected." there was a pause. "or was that your intention all along?"
She bristled indignantly and recalled her pokemon. Once they were away, she relaxed.
"Yes," she said. "Like I said earlier, a live untreated sample would have been amazing to get my hands on. Ceres is not a dangerous place, ordinarily, and I was hoping any scourge I encountered here would not be powerful; easy enough for the pyroar to take down, but enough to infect her. I have tranquilizers and a virus ball, of course. Not that I regret running into you, of course, but I was rather looking forward to it."
"ceres isn't as peaceful as you think it is. plants have started to wither and i suspect that the grime coated on trees isn't as natural as it should be. the scourge have sent scouts to the area, and they are going to strike. i just don't know when, or where in the forest."
ignatius didn't mention that unlike her, he wished to avoid the scourge for now.
"stay by the amberwell if you wish, then. they'll likely want to claim an area dearly precious to us researchers. follow the red bark trees."
"Then the Amberwell is my destination," she decided. "Even if I don't encounter any scourge, gathering more samples of the water can't hurt, especially if they plan on assaulting it. Whatever properties the water lends the vaccine can surely be extrapolated and manufactured. We shouldn't rely on one area for so much."
sabina was always the one to remain reasonable even in times of trouble. perhaps it was her comfort that afforded her a better view of the world. he admired her, sometimes.
he placed a hand over hers lightly, and let it rest there for just a moment.
ignatius smiled.
"may you have your scourge and success the next time we meet," he said, tipped an imaginary hat, and parted ways.
