J wanted to seek out the rift. his dream had ended remarkably; he remembered the details of it a little too vividly for his liking. his voice had lost its raw edge to it, but when he staggered out of bed, he could have sworn he saw a different face in the mirror. he looked away and went straight for pax institute.

he sidestepped broken glass as he entered the laboratories. it was empty, just like the last time he had been in the area. nothing had changed; he couldn't see scourge, and neither did any of his pokémon sense them.

that was odd. perhaps someone else was around, thought J, and glanced away.

donovan lit his cigar, puffing out smoke. it was delightful. he slumped down onto the ground, kamikaze keeping watch beside him. "it'll be fine. not like anyone is coming here, unless to help me out a little. or challenge, in which case get ready." he chuckled around his cigar, taking another drag. a footstep sounded in the hall, and kamikaze was immediately walking towards the sound.

it was just a person. "hello there!" donovan called, all smiles. one hand laid on his gun. he squinted. "kid, what're you doing out here? a bit far to wander away. a bad place to wander to."

"i'm looking for something," J grunted back. "maybe you can help me out."

the trainer glanced over his shoulder, and watched the figure in the distance.

"donovan, right?"

donovan bowed. "the one and only. you are?"

"well then, J, what have you come here for? a challenge?"

donovan grinned.

donovan was a steel-type trainer, and so was he. the difference laid in their reputations.

J was neither an elite four member nor a gym leader.
