This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

yes, J was remarkably good at random stuff. but not at keeping a good diet. the fact that he was still alive was almost like a miracle.
J shrugged away phoenix's head and was relieved to note that nima had recalled his pokémon. he glanced in the researcher's direction, and nodded lethargically. dinner sounded good. he could use some bitter powder and hot cocoa. maybe some alcohol, even though he had gradually grown too tolerant to the point where getting drunk was out of the question.
the trainer shuffled out of the open door and winced from the bright light outside. even though he was awake, his eyes weren't quite receptive to light just yet. he had to make do with half-squinting at everything.
"yea," he agreed, "okay." briefly, he contemplated the idea of telling nima that he didn't eat a lot, but figured that it was something best left to the moment dinner arrived on the table.
Hobbling ahead of J (who was doing the groggy man shuffle), Nima led the way back into the lobby. He wasn’t having to lean on the walls as much, the cramp slowly working its way out as he moved. Thank goodness…although he was about to sit back down so it was probably a pointless endeavor eheh. Glancing back, he failed to stifle a giggle at the squinty-faced J. He was really groggy, hahaha!
What papers indeed. The table Nima headed toward was laid out almost entirely with paperwork, with one small corner now dedicated to a simple dinner of soup, bread, and steamed veggies. The blond researcher practically fell into the booth seat, wincing and stretching out his legs briefly under the table. “All my researcher notes! I’ve been taking them whenever I’ve had the chance during my travels over the last few months, but this is the first time I’ve been able to sit down and try to organize them. So, um, I apologize for the mess, eheh. Just push those ones out of the way. I’m just about done consolidating as it is.”
J stumbled into a seat and stared at the dinner. he figured he could have the soup. the bread and veggies were things he'd rather not touch. solid food didn't exactly agree with him -- his previous encounters with them had ended badly, and he went back to his tried-and-tested diet of hot cocoa and bitter powder.
"no, it's okay," said J. he slipped his hands into his pockets before resuming his staring at the meal -- and then he took the soup, and placed it before himself. "i'll have only this."
he arranged nima's papers neatly on the side. he wasn't about to just push them aside; it was odd too. he preferred them looking tidy.
Nima blinked at J’s choice, but nodded. He didn’t mind finishing off the rest! Shoving papers aside, he grabbed the other plate and the bread, and took to nibbling. He noted the fact J was careful with his notes, and hid a grin with the bread. Ah that reminded him of fishing notes out of the sea, haha. Man, that had been a bad day, but it had led to this rather odd acquaintance. In all it was pretty strange. J was never much of one for talking (at least, not around him! Though that could just be because he had a habit of talking to much himself?), and they didn’t have anything particularly in common, but generally if he asked J to meet up, he would. Maybe J was just really accommodating? Hmm, yeah, that seemed most likely. And in the past, Nima had used J as one of his ‘pokedex entry’ buds, scanning each new addition and evolution. That was no longer necessary these days. Ah, but back to their earlier sort-of conversation!
“So…what’s been going on? You were so incredibly exhausted so obviously it’s been rough. I’m pretty out of touch with how the front lines have been…I haven’t really been in contact with anybody until recently.”
J contemplated his choice of answers to give nima, which ranged from the unbelievable-but-true to the completely normal but boring. he opted for the latter. he wasn't someone to talk about his own exploits, even if they were worth talking about. (they also trended towards ridiculous, absurd, and silly.)
"scourge, mostly," said J. he tried the soup, and found it warm and edible. he hoped he didn't end up collapsing because of some ingredient in it that didn't agree with him. "most of the people i know are still alive."
he stirred his soup, trying to see if there could be something in it that would end up killing him. he spotted some meat and fished them out, placing them by the side.
