batin turned towards ikram on the street, brow furrowing.

"i didn't expect to see you here," he said. "although i can't recall why i didn't think so."

he was wan and pale, though there were bright spots of color high on his cheeks. his eyes glittered brightly with fever, a side-effect of the shard sapping away at his energy.

the crowd bustled past. with batin focusing his attention at ikram, they became faceless smears of color. the shard maintained division of illusion carefully.

"i'm glad i met you," ikram said. she was lucky she still had some semblance of reality in whatever she was experiencing now; she didn't know what would have been the case had she been in the company of someone else altogether.

she looked around.

"this seems different. i was in a place with red skies and faceless people just now. a staircase to nowhere in particular. this place seems calmer."

batin's mind skipped like a broken disc for a moment before he realized what she meant. the shard eased its grip on him, perhaps wary of strangling the prey before the right moment.

"this is the new world," he told her. "the world i killed for."

he extended one translucent hand, sunlight shot through his skin.

"it should be calmer. everything is peaceful here. you'll find peace as well, if you need it."

he spoke with the calm certainty of a man who had found his heaven.

she reached out to grab his hand, but her breath caught in her throat and she found herself trying to steady her breathing. for some reason, she felt tired and weak; it came all too suddenly, for a world where everything was calm.

something flashed behind ikram's eyes. she warped, and disappeared from view.

what remained in her wake were a few twisted branches and dead leaves.
