personality
stefan is about as serious and conservative as they come, with little sympathy for incompetence or excuses. when it comes to his goals, he is rather tunnel-visioned about his goals and anything that would help him achieve his goals, so arceus help anyone who has a reason to stop him. to add to those "admirable" qualities, stefan is also a liar and a cheat whom no one should have good reason to trust.
that's not to say that he wouldn't be interesting company. for those who are unaware of his true nature, stefan can be rather charming when he wants something. he is fully aware that many people would find his personality rather ugly, so stefan isn't stupid enough to flaunt it when the situation matters.
is the glass half full or half empty? well, if he dumps all the water out of the cup, then you wouldn't have a question, would you? stefan is actually something of a cynic at heart, but that's not something that other people need to know.
as you can imagine, there's not much going for him as far as pride goes - it's always about the next objective. at the same time, he is also very meticulous and by-the-book with what he does. stefan will exploit whatever loopholes that he can, and leave very little to luck and chance.
he tends to favor dark types, but as you can imagine, there isn't a lot of room to be picky in kohaku nowadays.
history
there is nothing to live for but the next meal. that's what years of living in the grimer court has taught stefan, but his adoptive family added another clause.
the rules can be changed for as long as there is somebody to change them.
for stefan, this family changed everything. the alejandros were a foreign, old-money family of entrepreneurs who had more pokedollars than they had patience. they adopt him at age ten.
for the most part, stefan's education mostly consisted of learning how to obey every order issued by the alejandros. this, he was rather good at since room and board was at stake. eventually, obedience became a habit. it was only a matter of time before it became a way of life.
(he should hate them for it - he should, but he can never muster more than quiet resentment on the days when he feels particularly rebellious)
life is right, and those who have the greatest ability to provide it should always come first. that is what stefan thinks of as his mother screams at his failure to polish her valuables thoroughly. that is what he thinks of when his father burns the stack of forms that he has so patiently compiled for his convenience - he had caught a single typo on page 32.
life is right, stefan tells himself when the oldest alejandro runs off for the sort of pokemon adventure that he only reads about in history textbooks. since before the scourge, anyway. a servant had last spotted the young heir skipping up the steps of the pokemon association.
that day, he had sealed two fates.
stefan never saw the need to stop that prodigal son, so it is only right that he should be the one to chase after him, the alejandros say. regardless of the infected beasts that threaten to tear the flesh from his ribs, the life of the heir is paramount.
not seeking a suicide mission, stefan studies hard for his right to be accepted into the eos program. there are battle cds that the family keeps for recreational use, fresh from orre. electronic books are easily obtained in the libraries. stefan knows that he doesn't have long before the boy is beyond what anyone would call a safe distance from the city. he earns his qualifications after a week of sleepless study, aided by years of eavesdropping on his brother's private tutor.
with a sack of supplies an a new partner by his side, stefan is determined to drag that idiot brother back, kicking and screaming. he doesn't really care what he has to do - stefan is fully willing to decimate his team in front of his brother if that's what it takes to retrieve him.
