This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

She knocked before entering the laboratory through the front doors. Neo had considered just barging in--who knocks on lab doors anyway--but her manners and a decent upbringing won out in the end.
Within, she coughed for attention. "New researcher here," she announced, offering her surname only as if she were a soldier in the hills before remembering that she wasn't. "Neo. I was accepted into the Eos Program, and they said to come to... Cypress Laboratories--which I believe is here, yes?"
She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, note quite comfortable in this setting. Then again, Neo was rarely comfortable in any setting anymore--nowhere felt entirely safe.
"I'm here for a pokemon."

It was a very nice lab door with a red light at the top and a camera from where the Professor could see his guests before he flipped any security switch. However, it was quite a moment that she waited, anxiously switching on her feet. Perhaps she wondered what was taking so long.
Finally, the intercom came on and a rather disheveled voice broke the silence, accompanied by fuzzy metallic crackles. "S-sorry for the wait. Come in, please, Neo. - Take it back carefully, Mr. Krauss-" The message cut off sharply, and then, the steel door parted with a thud and the light above turned green.
Cypress was hurrying down the hallway behind towards her to greet her at the door. "T-truly sorry for the wait," he said, mildly out of breath. "Rattata got loose - Quite a calamity - nothing to worry about though. I brought the recently vaccinated stock with me." All the balls were clumped together in his arms as if he had grabbed them off the counter. "I'm afraid I've lost their tags for the time being, but you can open them up and see what they are."
With that, he let them all fall into her arms like a broken gumball dispenser.
(like before lol, grab the shiny sprite at dah bulba)
Finally, the buzzer came to life in a wave of static and a harried but otherwise normal voice, and Neo breathed a sigh of relief. She would have been... annoyed, to say the least, if the scourge had beat her here.
"The wait was hardly an inconvenience, professor. I'm sure you're a busy man, so thank you for finding the time," Neo replied, voice too even for the statement to come off as either sarcastic or particularly gracious.
She stepped into the laboratory, made no mention of how loose rattatas were the least calamitous calamity she'd ever heard of.
Nodding, she sat herself down on the (very clean) ground, cross-legged with a lapful of pokeballs. Patiently, she released each one and examined the pokemon within.
Finally, Neo stood up, nine pokeballs cradled in her arms, but only one held in her hand. "I think me and the solosis will get along quite well, professor."

Very nice choice, t-there" the professor said, clumsily gathering the balls dumped into his arms as fearfully as if they were eggs. "Well, you are the meticulous sort! I look forward to the research you conduct. Here is your pokedex now - be careful with it and don't let it get wet. Keep it in the case."
With that, he passed the girl a small tablet device that had been tucked under his arm.
"Good luck!" he said, offering a queasy smile, and toddling back inside, the door closed with -wump- behind him.
