This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Like a badass, Neo threw a rock at Phoebe. It bounced off the solosis' Reflect, and both researcher and pokemon nodded in approval.
"It seems that small projectiles are completely deflected," Neo said, making a small note of that in her journal. "Yet if I use the training center's bow and arrow--" she nocked an arrow into the compound bow and fired, "it does pierce the Reflect, but it causes you no particular harm. Now, if I up the ante, so to speak, and..."
Neo quickly calibrated one of the training center's machines, loaded it with a missile, and smacked the firing mechanism.
Without pomp or circumstance, Phoebe dropped to the ground, unconscious.
"Ah--and the ballista KO's you. I... apologize most profusely. But it was for science!"
Sheepishly, Neo scooped the fallen pokemon into her arms and sped off towards the nearest nurse.
"Oh, please. You're better than this! You're a magikarp! Supreme species, right?" They had been here for hours. She'd quit trying to get the magikarp to run through an obstacle course almost as soon as they'd arrived. Still, she knew Icarus wouldn't have dreamed himself here if he didn't want to get stronger--but to become stronger, he would have to try.
Icarus glubbed sadly.
"Nope. No. No, no, no. This is not how it ends. Icarus the magikarp does not lie limply on the floor. Icarus the magikarp does not abandon his dreams of victory. Icarus the magikarp does not under any circumstances become a lame psyduck."
Tir was blind. In general, this didn't seem to hamper his fighting ability. All the same, him and Leto were still playing a bizarre training exercise of tag. Tir couldn't see; Leto couldn't touch. It would've been comedic if it weren't a rather violent display of fire blasts, psywaves, night shades, and dragon breaths.
That made it a little bit more terrifying, and other people visiting the training center either watched on curiously or gave her pokemon a very, very wide berth. The strongest trainers simply ignored her.
Tir ran into a wall for the sixth time. He broke the wall completely with a dragon rage--just for fun, it seemed.
Leto swooped through Tir's body, dropping psychadelic waves of light followed by grim shadows.
Tir responded to the sudden chill with great balls of fire.
Neo didn't understand what appeal trainers found in this senseless violence.
The blitzle whinnied. Then Hyperion backed up a few meters.
<Can you still hear me?>
The blitzle agreed and took a few more steps back.
<How about now?>
Repeat.
<Testing, one two three.>
The blitzle neighed. As in, the blitzle said nay. Neo noted the distance between the two.
"It seems your telepathic range has increased by 1.788 meters since last week."
<Is that far enough to avoid a ballista?>
"Hyperion, charge and shock wave. That should approximate the effects of a--"
<No, no, no--wait! Don't!>
The blitzle quickly trotted over to the fallen solosis, unconscious on the ground. He whinnied something, which Neo took to mean It was for science. She was beginning to suspect she was a bad influence.
Icarus was in an electric chair--although for a gyrados, it was more of an electric wormhole, or an electric water slide. He'd been zapped quite a few times by now.
"See, can barely feel that, right? We keep this up, a thundershock will feel just like a tackle."
Icarus said ow.
"Stay still. The discomfort will pay off. This is for science."

Neo never remembered to go to the damned training center.
It was Hera's turn for the abusive researcher treatment. The charizard was being made to face an unending barrage of rocks. She was, admittedly, getting better at dodging, but Neo hadn't brought her here to work on her evasion skills. No, she'd brought her here to remove the charizard's crippling weakness to rock.
Hera complained, but she complained a lot. Until the charizard tried to burn Neo alive, Neo considered herself in pretty safe territory. Hera would let her know (likely by means of death by immolation) if Neo pushed her to hard.

Neo had learned that Tir really didn't like blizzards. He also didn't like ice beams to the face. It was understandable, but Neo was of the opinion that some exposure to snow really shouldn't knock the dragon pokemon out in one blow.
This is why she'd cramped Tir into a meat freezer under the theory of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. To make the experience a bit fairer, Neo joined him. It was a tight fit.
Her teeth chattered.
Tir coiled up into a miserable three-headed bundle.
Neither of them said anything.

Phoebe wasn't scared of the dark. This didn't mean she wasn't excessively weak to dark type attacks. It just meant that she was reckless and fearless. Besides for being a very kind, very sweet pokemon, she was also not the type to shy away from certain death. Unlike the rest of Neo's pokemon, Phoebe at least would have the good sense to plan her funeral to save everyone else the trouble though.
There was something to be said for consideration like that.
<This is more uncomfortable than anything else,> the reuniclus said from within a dark room.
"There's a barrage of dark pulses incoming," Neo said.
<What??>
"That was a joke."
