This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

delilah glanced down at the carefully-preserved letter in her hands, her proof of the eos program. her left hand trembled as her thoughts wandered back to nerio, to the boy she had left behind. she knew it was unfair to him, especially when there was still so much to be done -- but she needed to leave. (she had to get out of there.)
she shook her head to dispel her doubts, her expression turning to stone, and the woman raised her right fist to rap her knuckles against the laboratory door. "yo, is anyone home? i'm here as a trainer for the eos program." after a few more stern knocks, she folded her arms across her chest and waited.
the woman had crossed the rubicon. there was no going back now.
There was, in fact, someone home. At first, the silence was resounding--until a sudden clatter and a crash created a cacophony and pokemon cries. If you listened carefully, you could hear a few attacks going off, bu you'd have to be deaf to miss the hissing and spitting and gnashing of teeth.
Suddenly, all was silent again.
The door swung open, and the professor appeared in person, face smiling--and bleeding, three clawmarks sliced clear down his cheek. Behind him, a gothithelle behind him held several rattatas telekinetically afloat in the air.
"Hello! W-welcome to Cypress Laboratories. An Eos trainer... please come in. Um, and p-please don't mind the mess."
The gothithelle added, <Please be wary of the rattata. We were testing the effects of Taunt upon Enraged pokemon.>
The professor wrung his hands. "Ah--and you'll be w-wanting a p-pokemon, yes? ...Maybe?"
her eyebrows furrowed as she heard some sort of disturbance from the inside of the laboratory, her slim fingers sliding into her bag. delilah felt the hilt of her knife against her palm. (better safe than dead, she reasoned.)
then her eyes widened as the door opened, revealing a bleeding, rather disheveled man whom she assumed was the professor. "uh, i could come back later if you're busy," she offered skeptically with a pointed glance at the floating rattata. delilah raised an eyebrow at the gothitelle, glancing from the pokemon to the professor, before stepping into the less-than-pristine lab.
"i'll be sure not to bother them, then," she replied wryly. being on the receiving end of those things was not her idea of a fantabulous start. delilah turned back to the professor, nodding absentmindedly. "but yeah, a pokemon would be pretty great."
"Oh, n-no, we're not busy, not busy at all. Uh, unless t-the rattata get loose again... But I don't think they will!" He stepped back to give Delilah space to enter.
He shuffled over to the pokemon PC, wincing a little as the blood on his cheek started dripping onto his lab coat. The wound stung, but he had the time to sort this out before he found a first-aid kit.
The pokemon PC started popping out pokeballs like a gumball machine after Professor Cypress pressed a few buttons. Most of them he didn't manage to catch, but a glance from the gothithelle lifted the pokeballs off the ground and floated over to Delilah. The rest Cypress carried, fumbling dangerously with them as he presented them to Delilah.
"All of these are freshly vaccinated. A-and friendly! ...Maybe. S-some of them are, a-anyway."
she watched in concern as the man continued to bleed from his face, her teeth worrying at her lower lip. was she really at the right place? this lab didn't seem to be incredibly ... reliable. (not to mention the fact that the professor himself was as frazzled as a bird in a hurricane.) delilah stepped forward when she saw the pokeballs about to fall, but the psychic pokemon's abilities stopped her in her tracks.
well, at least the pokemon was useful.
the woman took the large amount of pokeballs, carefully cradling them in her arms. delilah glanced at the shining spheres, then at the professor. "... y'know, you could just take care of your face right now. it's not like i have anything better to do but to wait." her teal eyes landed on the gothitelle. "and she's there to watch over me, anyway." (she wasn't stupid enough to go around causing a mess in the lab, anyway.)
delilah then began to search the pokeballs in her arms for any indication of which pokemon they would be -- only to discover there were no labels. delilah addressed the psychic pokemon, raising an eyebrow. "could you tell me which pokemon is in which pokeball, or should i find out for myself?"
The gothithelle swept over to Delilah's side, gracefully setting the rattata down in a box as she lifted each of the pokeball's.
<Professor, you should run to the restroom and make use of the medical kit there. As for you, young trainer, observe,> she instructed.
"Er. Yes. Yes, I-I shall do that." With that, the professor shuffled off.
One pokeball hovered higher in the air. <Chimchar, fire type, the chimp pokemon.>
The pokeball lowered, and another lifted in its place. She lifted and lowered pokeballs as she spoke. <Exeggcute, grass and psychic, the egg pokemon. Dratini, the dragon pokemon. Cryogonal, the crystalizing ice pokemon. Blitzle, the electrified pokemon. Magikarp, a decidedly unappetizing sashimi specialty. Unown--that is the pokemon Unown, not the word unknown--which is rather mysterious, and I am not knowledgable to expound upon its virtues. Volbeat, the firefly pokemon. Riolu, a baby fighter, called the emanation pokemon. Last but not least, the ground-rock hybrid, Rhyhorn.>
She folded her hands in front of her. <Should you require greater knowledge, I will do what I can to provide.>
delilah listened and watched as the gothitelle introduced the pokemon in each pokeball, the spheres lifting themselves from her arms. tapping her foot, the woman considered her options. there were quite a few pokemon that caught her interest, but if she could only choose one ...
picking a specific pokeball, she carefully held it in her hand. "i suppose riolu will do." she grins at the psychic pokemon. "is that it, then?"
<An excellent choice. You will find the fighting riolu full of vim of vigor should you treat it right. Should you treat it poorly--poor within the understandable circumstances of a region battling the end of civilization as we know it--then you may fight its prowess less impressive, trainer.>
The gothithelle collected the remaining nine pokeballs. <Good luck to you on your journeys, trainer. I will file the paperwork posthaste, and I trust the Eos program will remain in communication as you begin your pokemon adventure.>
