This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Lady Mercedes, the best breeder in all of Kohaku. Little Wendy Burkett couldn't help but be a little intimidated by her. The Breeder's Guild was a large building with an air of elegance and sophistication, just like the woman inside. Wendy's shoulders were flexed up to her chin as she sidestepped to the door. Intimidation was natural, right? After all, Wendy wanted to be the best breeder in the Kohaku region, and it was clear that she would have to work very hard to even get to Lady Mercedes's level, let alone pass her.
Raising her hand (and her courage) she knocked on the door ever so lightly, and gave a quiet call. "Lady Mercedes?" She flattened her skirt. One more call and a knock, this time a little bit louder. "Lady Mercedes?" Wendy knew very well that the famous breeder was a judgmental woman. Rumors of her skill and persona had even reached Johto when Wendy was a child. She just hoped desperately that she would be liked.

The door opened to reveal a hulking nidoking--large even for one of its species. It stared at the girl before him, expression unreadable, growled something unintelligible before swinging the door open and stalking away.
"Come in," said a voice in a posh accent, dripping of culture.
Lady Mercedes was at her cherrywood desk, various papers littered all over it--some on fine parchment, others on cheap printer paper, others splattered with what looked suspiciously like blood. The one in her hand as she stood up to face her guest was one of the bloody sort.
"I assume you are an aspiring breeder? If not, please leave. I have letters to attend to. If you are--good. You have chosen an excellent time to engage in the most rewarding of careers. They write me incessantly: more pokemon are needed," she said, indicating the letter in her hand.
The girl's smile is small as she stares at the Nidoking, and can't help feeling quite awkward. She offered him an even bigger smile, raising her eyebrows. Wendy shuffled in to the elegant building as she heard the sweet tone and accent drip out of the lady's mouth, stuffed to the brim with culture and sophistication. Wendy gives a bow-like nod, a polite way of succumbing to the other person's lead of the conversation. The new breeder lowered her arms down and slightly out, leaving a bird-like posture for her to adjust to.
The woman was at her wooden desk, red liquids and papers strewn about messily, yet somehow perfectly organized in a manner that everything could be picked up and viewed at ease. The blonde listened to her superior before giving yet another nod and a confirmation. "Yes ma'am, I'm an aspiring pokemon breeder." A friendly smile. "I'm very excited to get started ma'am, but I-I'm very unhappy to hear about the lack of pokemon." She had an accent too, actually. It was odd and her speech was a mix of british and texan, something immediately recognizable.
"And may I just say ma'am, that you're an inspiration to me, and all breeders who have half a brain. I'm very excited to be meeting you, ma'am."

Oh, was she ever this young herself? She'd started her own career as a breeder as a bright-eyed girl, but that was decades ago for her. It was an old memory, hard to pin down.
The nostalgia was heart-warming, in a way. Succumbing to a faint smile, Lady Mercedes said, "Believe me when I say I'm just as pleased to meet you. I'm glad you've visited. Not all the program initiates bother--which is fine. I had no guidance myself when I started, but if you're willing to let me coddle my recruits, I have a gift in mind..."
Lady Mercedes took swift, sweeping steps to a pokemon PC, a startlingly large machine hooked up to a holographic machine. With the press of a few buttons, a pokemon box appeared on the screen, ten different pokemon on display.
"These are my own hatchlings. You're welcome to claim two of them. Call it a little headstart on your career."
She was nice. That was a pleasant surprise. Wendy had always heard intimidating stories of this legendary breeder, but the Lady was pleasant in every way, or at least every way that Wendy had been exposed to. The blonde could imagine being as successful as the Lady, in a large elegant place much like this one. She'd wear silk every day, a long flowing outfit such as Lady Mercedes's. Wendy would very much like that, even if it meant being second to the famous breeder across from her.
The lady was quick on her feet for a gal with such elegance, and Wendy couldn't help but admire her as she set up the PC system and displayed her recent hatchlings. There were quite a few, and she was very happy to be offered one. Ecstatic, actually. "Wow...I-I'm really allowed two of these pokemon?" She croaked, rubbing her eyes from the artificial light displayed by the PC. "Than-Thank you so much, ma'am. I promise I won't let you down!" She exclaimed, blue eyes flickering and trying to accommodate each pokemon on the screen.
It only took her a moment. Wendy had always been a curious girl. That Deino very much interested her... it was rare in Unova, and she had never seen anything like it in her life. The Smeargle looked outstanding too-Wendy had heard that the rare pokemon could learn any move! That was amazing! "Lady Mercedes, um, if you don't mind, the Deino and the Smeargle interest me g-greatly." She was nervous, and it showed easily. "I think they're my favorites....Unless they have some sort of importance to you! In that case, I'll take whichever ones you can offer..."

...Lady Mercedes swore she'd never been quite this excited though--except for maybe that time when that third generation egg move bred true. Her advice was delivered dryly: "Don't forget to breathe."
She shook her head, a tinge of disapproval in her voice now. "You're a breeder now. You should take pride in your hatchlings, but they are rarely yours to keep. The sooner you learn to say goodbye to them the easier your road will be. Trust me on that."
She didn't smile now because she was entirely serious. "If you're good at your job, the pokemon you breed will go far--but not in your own hands." She gave Wendy a pointed look, and when she spoke it was equal parts encouragement and threat. "I trust these will go far in your hands. I pray you won't let me down."
