This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"Scraggy!" exclaimed the lizard-like pokemon by Brazil's side, portraying its excitement; the sea air blew through the docks, invigorating it. The brackish spray left a fresh scent that pervaded where Proserpina City met the ocean; the orange haired researcher felt a certain confidence coming here, and perhaps that was why he'd elected to battle. The Scraggy was before him, his pokedex was set up, and the sun was shining. He was feeling lucky. Regardless of the results of the battle, he'd have made one tiny step further along the road to becoming an expert researcher.
"Ready to go Caspian?" He asked the shedding pokemon. He received a nod in reply. The pokemon then steeled its resolve and narrowed its eyes as best as it could - in short, Caspian was scowling at its foe.
"Then let's go, sand attack!" After pulling up its "pants", Scraggy rushed towards its opponent, kicking up sand as it grew near. The lizard pokemon aimed to get some of the docks' dirt into the adversary pokemon's eyes.
"Follow it up with a low kick, Caspian." Brazil wasn't going to hold back, even if it was just a battle for research! The first combo of the bout announced, the researcher waited for his pokemon to carry out his instructions.

"Yeah, no," Mordecai said with a grin as Flavius danced backwards with light feet, away from the Low Kick. The Pikachu twirled about and hop-scotched out of the low kick's direction. The Sand Attack was a bother, but Mordecai was depending upon the Pikachu's quickness to balance it out. Flavius' red cheeks sparked with anticipation, rather enjoying the rush that he got from a battle. Occasionally, he wished that Mordecai would send him out for fights more frequently. It was another way for him to burn off some of his infinitesimal energy. On the other hand, his trainer preferred to spend more time nurturing a recently-hatched Blitzle, which made such a battle a rare treat for the Pikachu.
It was an impromptu battle, but Mordecai was more than happy to provide a researcher with the necessary information for his or her Pokédex. After all, as a researcher, the man was obliged to use science in the name of Eos. Then one day, perhaps the Kohaku region would be finally purged of the Hades virus. Brazil's duty was to gather as much information about the Pokémon that he met on his journeys, and it was Mordecai's job to breed the strongest Pokémon.
"Well, I don't intend on making this easy for you either," Mordecai quipped, before nodding at the Pikachu standing before him. "How about a Thunder Shock then?"

'Almost!' thought Brazil, excited nonetheless over the near success of his combo. The Pikachu released volts in retaliation, utilising the move known as thundershock. Brazil was caught off guard by the speed of the attack, and couldn't call out for Caspian to evade it. Still, the Scraggy proved to be hardy enough to withstand the hit, grimacing from the pain before reverting to its normal, cheery expression.
"Good move." Commented the researcher - no wonder Pikachu was such a popular pokemon in other regions. A marvellous pokemon or not, however, there was still a spirit of competition to be relished and acted upon, and so onwards the battle rolled. Brazil instructed the shedding pokemon again.
"Now let's try sand attack again, with a faint attack to finish!" He said, egging his pokemon on. It was a similar combo to what he'd tried previously, only after the sand attack Caspian would try to attack the Pikachu's blind spot.
Why, yes, Mordecai was quite aware that he had just sent Flavius to fight a Pokémon that was double the Pikachu's own level. The hot-headed little electric mouse needed to be taught a lesson or two. Besides, being challenged was the only way for a Pokémon to grow stronger. Trying times were upon the Pikachu as the Scraggy kicked up another cloud of sand. Flavius sneezed and rubbed at his eyes, letting out irritated squeaks.
"Flavius, Thunder Shock again! Start charging that body of yours!" Mordecai called. Of course, the Pikachu was flustered by his trainer's commands. Was he implying that there wasn't a way to dodge the Faint Attack? Now wasn't the time to question things though, so Flavius' body began to glow with the ThunderShock. It was completely harmless to the electric mouse, but Mordecai had his fingers crossed that the Scraggy would be in for a surprise when the Faint Attack connected.
"Brace yourself!" he yelled, as he stepped forward. The Scraggy's fist connected with the Pikachu's side, sending the creature flying backwards. Mordecai's arms were waiting though, and he easily caught the exhausted Pokémon. "And this, Flavius, is why we don't go sailing headlong into fights," he said, ruffling the Pikachu's head. Flavius pouted, arms crossed over his chest.
Mordecai waved at the Researcher on the other side of the docks. "Well, if you're up for one more, I've got a trick up my sleeve!"
LVL 5 HIT BY: Sand-Attack, Faint Attack DODGED: N/A USED: Thundershock on self Pikachu fainted! Brazil's Scraggy gained 1 level!
"Haha, great victory Caspian!" Brazil was overjoyed, and just a little oblivious to the fact he'd battled a pokemon far weaker than his. Still, a win was a win right? "Well, if you're up for one more, I've got a trick up my sleeve!" Oh? Another pokemon to switch in? Well, it'd help his pokedex in the very least. So Brazil accepted, waving back a thumbs up and shouting,
Mordecai returned a very grumpy Flavius to his Pokéball. The red light released from it engulfed the Pokémon's body, sucking it back into the capsule. "We'll get you to a Pokémon center soon," he said to it, before stowing it away in his brown satchel.
The man withdrew another Pokéball from its contents and tossed it up and down a couple of times into his palm. "Here goes," he said, finally throwing it into the air. The capsule burst open, and the hum of buzzing wings reverberated in the air. The light faded away, replaced by a fearsome-looking wasp Pokémon. The Beedrill brandished its stingers before itself, red eyes glinting in the Scraggy's direction. Mel was a new catch, so now seemed like the perfect time to give the Pokémon's abilities a spin.
"Mel, we start with a Poison Sting and a Harden," Mordecai said, to which the Beedrill's body appeared to stiffen and gleam in the sun, enhancing its defenses. Then the bug Pokémon surged forward, stingers glowing purple.

"Oh geez." Brazil's happy expression was wiped out as the Beedrill rose menacingly above the docks and hurtled towards the shedding pokemon; it moved with such alacrity that you could go so far as to say Brazil was in awe of the bee pokemon. The poisoned stingers scored a direct hit on Brazil's Scraggy, knocking it out.
"Oh geez. I guess I got a bit overconfident, huh?" Mused Brazil, returning Caspian to its pokeball. That Beedrill looked really scary. And all he really had to face it was Smoochum or Abra...
"This is a two on two right? Then Lenor, let's try and win this back!" He threw the pokeball and the Smoochum appeared, though it was a little intimidated by its foe.
Two-on-two sounded just fine to Mordecai. He glanced at Mel, whose wings buzzed as he raised his stingers into the air with a victorious mien. "Think you can take another one?" he asked the Beedrill. The bug Pokémon nodded his head and let out a loud bzzzzt! in response. "That's what I like to hear," Mordecai said.
The Beedrill swung around behind the Smoochum, using its superior speed to his advantage. The Sweet Kiss would be a problem. Mordecai was also aware that now was not the time to get overconfident. After all, the Smoochum was part Ice-type and part Psychic-type. The Beedrill reeled backwards a bit, body glinting with a Harden. There was no doubt that the Smoochum had an attack that would deal devastating damage on a bug-poison type, so now was the time to strengthen his defenses.
Then, the Beedrill surged forward with sharpened stingers. Never once did he hesitate in his onslaught of Fury Attack.

The attack didn't connect, but Brazil wasn't too worried - Lenor could handle herself, he was sure of it. As the Beedrill used harden again, however, the chances of him winning this match started to slip away. The bee pokemon rushed in for an attack, stingers almost blurring with the speed at which they moved. Undaunted, Brazil commanded,
"Put a freeze on it, use ice punch!" If the punch connected, hopefully the bee pokemon would become frozen in place - or at the very least, slowed in its tracks.
"Follow it up with sweet kiss" And if Lenor's previous attack was successful, then the Smoochum would be in prime position to land the sealing move. Brazil was laying the fate of the batte on the confusion of his pokemon's adversary; it didn't matter how fast a pokemon moved if it wasn't able to coherently string together attacks.
The Beedrill's body went rigid as the Ice Punch connected. He flinched a little, the ice attack biting into his hardened body. Mordecai was partially relieved that he had asked Mel to strengthen his defenses before any debilitating attacks could be dished out. On the other hand, it did nothing to avoid the status effects that the Ice Punch carried. Mel threw a frustrated expression at his frozen left pincer. So much for being able to utilize both, for one was entirely encased in ice. He blinked his red eyes again as the Smoochum landed its lips upon his face, but the Pokémon shook the ice-psychic off and quickly managed to regain sentience. Good.
"Mel, go in with a Bug Bite!" Mordecai called. The frozen stinger would prevent the Pokémon from fully utilizing two moves, but luckily, the Pokémon's stinger on his rump was ready to go. Granted, the wasp Pokémon didn't really have teeth, but the stinger's bite was enough to imitate one. The Beedrill surged forward, frozen stinger raised in the air to avoid getting in his way, before brandishing his yellow stinger at the Smoochum.
He'd got the freeze on the Beedril with the ice punch, incapacitating one of its stingers; elated, Brazil failed to realise that Beedrill actually had three facets through which to cause damage - the third stinger on its rear. Even worse, the sweet kiss hadn't worked and that bug bite was homing in fast!
"Okay Lenor, use ice punch to counter it again!" The Smoochum struck out as the bug bite came in, its fist glowing with algid energy. The Beedrill's weight was mostly on one side, and if Brazil was a more competent battler he probably would have tried to capitalise upon that fact. Alas, the ice punch came straight on, aiming at the rear stinger of the bee pokemon, partially with the intent to knock it off balance, partially because the Smoochum was so small.
After running underneath the hovering Beedrill, the Smoochum would subsequently get back, panting a little from trying to counter attacks head on. It wasn't really the strategy one would expect from such a minute pokemon, but the ice-psychic type was as feisty and brave as it was cute. Still, it was a little concerning to the pokemon researcher that, whilst Lenor was getting worn down, that Beedrill seemed to be in its prime... maybe he should have tried harder to prevent the bug pokemon from using harden, because at the moment it seemed to be giving Smoochum's foe the upper hand.
Mel teetered in the air as the Smoochum's icy fist connected with the Pokémon's stinger, swinging around in a loop to use the force he was knocked back with to correct his flight pattern again. Mordecai was quite relieved that he had the Beedrill strengthen his defenses before going in against the Smoochum. The Pokémon was small, but the breeder had also learned that it was still a very hardy Pokémon. In fact, Mordecai was rather impressed by Lenor.
"Mel, how are you holding up?" Mordecai called as the Beedrill hummed above the two trainers' heads. The Pokémon rubbed his two stingers together, one thawed and one still frozen. There was still some fight in the Beedrill, even though the Smoochum's attacks had started to put a dent in his energy. "One more time then, in with a Fury Attack!"
The Beedrill dipped down, whizzing towards the Smoochum with a single stinger brandished. He drew his stinger back, before thrusting it at the Smoochum with a blinding speed. Even with one stinger, the Pokémon intended on never losing a beat, as he jabbed at the Smoochum.
"Here they come... Lenor, hold fast!" The Beedrill loomed in on the kiss pokemon, apparently gearing up to use fury attack. He had to finish this - even the orange haired pokemon researcher could see Smoochum was going to lose if the fight endured much longer.
"Okay, give it your all Lenor! Use pound to knock the stinger away from you, then sweet kiss to finish it off." The Smoochum hurled a fist at the Beedrill's stinger, hopefully shifting it to the side for at least a second - but it was that one second the ice type pokemon needed to capitalise upon; if she was successful she'd use the momentum of the pound attack to spin and leap into the air. Aiming to land on the Beedrill again, Lenor would use sweet kiss as a final attempt to confuse her foe. If it failed... well it was going to look bleak for her, to say the least.
Mel wove to and fro before the Smoochum, as if to confound the little Pokémon with his speed. But the Smoochum struck out anyways with a Pound attack. Mel's body quivered with effort as he pushed the Fury Attack onward. With a final push, the Pokémon managed to expel himself backwards before any further damage. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't in time to escape the Sweet Kiss that the Smoochum planted on his golden cheek.
Under his carapace body, the Beedrill blushed, flight pattern becoming shaky. The poor thing was left frozen and confused. Mordecai gave Mel an amused expression, having never seen the typically serious-faced Beedrill with such a dreamy expression on his face. "All right, Mel. It's going to be hard, but you're going to have to snap out of it soon," he called at the Beedrill. Of course, Mel was deaf to his words as he flew idly about in a figure 8 flight pattern.
Finally, things were going his way! All they had to do was finish it off and the victory would be theirs! Exactly when he cared so much about winning was beyond him, and to be fair it didn't exactly matter either - Brazil was exhilarated and his confident energy would be passed on to his pokemon. Despite the fatigue starting to creep into her muscles Lenor also grinned; she too could sense the win.
"The final blow Lenor, use your most powerful ice punch square on!" The kiss pokemon complied, running forward and lunging at the Beedrill before swinging her fist with all her might.
