This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

isaac hadn't been crying -- he hadn't cried since the day after delilah left him alone, in nerio. everyone had left; no-one had remained behind, except him. he had meandered around in the city for a while, looked at everyone, and felt that he had to leave.
everything there was too painful; he left for a place where a man told him it would be better, and the scourge would be no-where near him. isaac left for juno, only to arrive in a city so hopeful he felt that he had no-where left to stand. the humans regarded him apprehensively -- no longer did he look as presentable as he did after the journey from the city to the land of aspiration and ambition.
he no longer trusted humans, only pokémon. they did not lie to him; they were honest, forgiving, even if they did not trust him.
She looked up from work--endless maps and maps of the outlands around Nerio City and the fallen Bacchus and Decima--and Sa'di was going to say "Why?" or more likely "Go home, little boy."
But she didn't. One good hard look in the eyes, a silence passed, and she nodded.
"Here, this is the spiel: we're here to defend the region, got it? We've got one job, and one job only: to beat the scourge back to the hell they came from. Never give up; never surrender."
She gestured to an open area to her left, a small distance from the table. "You're our human recruit, so go run over and meet our pokemon recruits. I'm sure one of them will pick you for a partner."
one of them. isaac, while apprehensive, decided to give sa'di the benefit of the doubt. he wasn't sure whether the pokémon would drive him away, but he was confident that as a newly-minted ranger, he was bound by duty to work together with his partner towards ridding kohaku of the scourge.
but no matter how many waves he stopped, isaac felt as if he would feel no different.
the boy glanced over all the pokémon before him, and watched as they all gave him apprehensive looks -- some a glance or two, some gazes intense. he took a deep breath, and nodded at the axew. "come," he said, reaching out a hand to the dragon-type, "we're going to be partners now."
isaac wasn't sure if it was a trick of the light, but the other pokémon seemed vaguely relieved.
He might've doubted, but Sa'di didn't. She wouldn't have accepted a ranger that stood no potential of finding a partner. There was no such thing as a ranger without a partner pokemon, anyway.
Well, there was such thing. It was just a very sad thing.
After a moment, she glanced to the boy and--she wasn't terribly surprised--the axew. "Chosen so quickly? Good. We're gathering outside Nerio City, hoping to push the scourge out of Bellona Hills. Report there whenever you're ready--we'll need all the help we can get. Until then... good luck."
isaac nodded, and so did the axew. the green dragon hissed slightly when isaac turned to leave the warehouse; the creature cast a look back at the other pokémon. it nodded, solemn.
"i'll be there as soon as possible," promised the boy, never once slowing down for his partner.
