Bardrick has had an interesting life. He was born in Cura Village to a rough family. His father was a bit of a drunk, and his mother had some temper problems. Naturally it lead to little Bardrick being treated a bit more harshly than a lot of other kids his age, but really the anger from his parents was usually too busy being thrown at each other to even pay attention to the kid hiding in his room.
As he got a bit older Bardrick began looking for an escape. When he turned ten and was allowed a Pokemon he got just the escape he needed. With Swablu in hand and ambition enough to fill five children, he left home and never looked back at the endless struggle between his parents. Instead he threw himself into training. He was an energetic and eccentric trainer right form the start, every pokemon caught was given a nickname and every battle was met with enthusiasm. Whether he won or lost, each battle was treated with happiness and anticipation for the next. It wasn't until he was about fifteen and mostly through the gym circuit that he so much as considered the researcher field.
On his way to one of the last gyms the region had to offer he was approached by a woman standing outside a large building. At first he thought she'd want to battle as well, the way she began to talk to him about his exploits. His badges and a battle she'd spectated. In actuality she was some kind of scout for the local research lab, and she wanted him to come in and check out the facility. The scientists responded well to him when he spoke to them. Despite his age Bardrick knew a very great deal about pokemon. Even before his journey he'd used pokemon as an escape from the eternal shouting downstairs. He'd read books, watched shows, and listened to documentaries. This studious nature only increased when he began his journey and needed to learn things for the sake of battle.
After spending a day with the scientists, Bardrick found a new interest rising within him. He'd never noticed how much he'd learned about pokemon, never realized what he could do with that knowledge. The various ways to conduct research and the potential for such adventure thrilled him! Given a few days to wrap up some loose ends he returned to the facility under a kind of apprenticeship under the scout who had recruited him. From then on Bardrick continued to battle and do a few of the things he used to, but he dropped the gym challenge, and in place of so much training he put research in instead.
For years Bardrick continued a simple routine. Travel, research, report. His social life became much more restricted. He spoke to a few people, but didn't really develop any lasting relationships. No dating, no "best friends", the only person he really found was a mother figure in the scientist who had scouted him all those years back. So, he stuck to his job and for the most part things went well. That was, of course, until a year ago.
Bardrick was out on a research trip on Lake Pax. Out on a trip in cooperation with Pax Institute of Research he had been spending weeks down by the lakeside, observing the pokemon and their habits. Things had been pretty average. Bardrick would go down, take some notes, maybe fight the occasional territorial pokemon, and then go back to the small cabin provided for him and his pokemon. Then, one afternoon as he was leaving the lakeside he heard a sharp cry. Thinking perhaps a pokemon had been hurt he went sprinting towards the sound. When he got there he did find an injured pokemon, but it wasn't being harmed by people the way he thought it would be. The sight of various water pokemon digging into the flesh of a dead Rattata and the smell of blood assaulted him, and suddenly he was sent running the other way.
That was the day he lost his first pokemon. While he ran for the safety of the cabin he released his Manetric, a friendly female he'd named Lavender. Nearly there they were stopped by a pack of Rattata and Raticate. All with dead eyes and hungry expressions. They'd attempted to fight their way through, but more and more kept cropping up. In the end they made a dash for it, and the only reason Bardrick escaped was because the pokemon had fallen on Manetric and neglected him as he ran into the cabin and locked its door.
As soon as he was safe within the cabin Bardrick began to break apart the various wooden objects in the house. The bed's frame, his nightstand, the dining table, even the chairs. Then, using the tools available, he boarded up the windows and door. It was an exhausting process, and throughout all of it he was assaulted by the image of dead pokemon he'd seen. Sounds of horror from the nearby city reached him when the night came. Something had gone wrong, and now he was trapped in the thick of it.
The next morning he wanted to escape, but there was no way out. The cabin was surrounded night and day, he could find no hope in escaping. Sadly, hope would have to be disregarded as he began to find danger even in the cabin. One night he woke to the sounds of a scuffle, and found a few of his pokemon attempting to fight back his Hitmonchan, who had succumbed to the same disease the pokemon outside suffered from. He had to put down the pokemon, using a weapon of his own creation and the attacks of his pokemon. As the months went by more of his pokemon fell. The pokemon he'd captured for research, his personal pokemon he'd brought along. He knew if he didn't try and leave soon there would be no leaving at all. And he had to escape.
As a researcher, he knew it was his job to help contain and eliminate this disease. He had to escape and help the world, however much of it remained, in defeating this plague. This scourge. So, a year after he had boarded himself into that cabin, his supplies running low and his pokemon down to only a bit more than half a team, he resolved to leave.
He needed to escape, not only for himself, but for his pokemon and for mankind.
tl;dr Bardrick had a rough childhood. When he could start his pokemon journey he threw himself into it completely. Eventually he was scouted by a research facility and started his career as a researcher. He got caught up in stuff at Lake Pax and has been stuck there for a year. Now he's leaving with a hope to help with a cure and to avoid losing the rest of his pokemon.
