This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

addi walked into the lab, peering about. she'd heard about sa'di, a force to be reckoned with for sure. sure, she was looking forward to getting her pokemon, but she was still singing under her breath all the way in.
"excuse me, sa'di?" she was looking for a head of red hair, as she recalled. "i'm here for a partner." addi wasn't quite sure what pokemon she was looking forward to, but well, they'd become close. eventually. hopefully.
For once, Sa'di was not pacing around the war table, nor was she poring over maps or data. Instead, Lucida had made her a cup of tea, and Shirazi had insisted she take a moment to meditate.
...She wasn't very good at meditating. There was simply too much that needed thinking out. When the aspiring ranger appeared, Sa'di was content to abandon the effort.
The eos candidate files were--well, they were somewhere. Sa'di didn't see the point of verifying every candidate that walked through anyway.
"If you're here to fight the scourge, we're glad to have you with us, ranger," she said genuinely. Every man counted. She pointed to her left, "Our pokemon recruits are usually in the open area over there. Some might just be walking around too. Ask one of them to take you on. If they say no, leave it be. It's got to be a two-way relationship you're building here."

addi walked into the group of pokemon, kneeling down beside a shinx. the electric type sniffed her, but walked away soon after. the same was true for an oddish and cradily. the shuppet showed marginally more interest, but was still one that floated away.
the only one who didn't was a houndour. "hey there." addi sat down and the houndour crawled into her lap, licking her cheek. she laughed, ruffling the light blue fur. "i guess i'll take this little guy." she said after a little more cuddling. standing up, addi walked over with the houndour at her heels. "can i have his information?"
They looked like they liked each other. Good. Sa'di hadn't anticipated any problems, but there was always the occasional prospective ranger that she had to eject and send to Professor Cypress as a trainer.
"Certainly," she said, finding a sheaf of papers. She leafed through them--omanyte, swalot, minun, the other pokemon they had around--until she spotted the houndour's forms. Sa'di presented it to Addi, but not quite with the respect usually given to paperwork. The Ranger Union didn't really worry too much about paperwork when it came to pokemon; a partner was a partner. You didn't need a license to prove it.
"Fire pokemon are good on travels. Building a campfire can be rough, but the houndour should be able to help with that, and keep you warm until this winter's finally done with us." To the houndour, she added, "You take care of your ranger, alright?"
With a curt nod, she sent the two off on their pokemon adventure. "Best of luck."
