This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

They stood there, slouched over in the most unprofessional manner while the other had a stance of a champion. If there was ever a yin-yang scenario Jayden ventured the thought that now was the perfect time, if any, to apply such a thing. The thought also briefly surfaced that it could either prove for perfect teamwork or disastrous results, but he pushed that away almost immediately.
"Straighten up." He bent down and hissed it sharply into the timburr's ear, ignoring the way it waved at what it carried on its back with a dismissive gesture of his hand as he stood up, tugging at the collar of his shirt, staring at the skarmory and wondering if its wings were sharp enough to draw blood.
"into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely."
Achilles needed something to chew on, stat. The Gible wriggled about in the man's arms, snapping his jaws at Mordecai's fingers if they came anywhere near. "Are you sure you want to do this," he deadpanned at the dragon Pokémon, who hungrily eyed the Skarmory and Timburr. He wriggled about a bit more, opened his mouth, and let out a rude burp. Perched upon Mordecai's other shoulder, a Pikachu shook his head, pressing two paw-fingers against his forehead.
"Flavius, you're going to have to lead," Mordecai said, still unsure about why he was tossing the Gible to the wind. So be it. Achilles would be okay with Flavius out there to help (or so he hoped). The Pikachu hopped off the breeder's shoulder, and Mordecai set Achilles on the ground. "Good luck to you both," he sighed. Achilles listened well enough, but the little Gible was often frustrated easily.
There was nothing more filthy and disgusting than watching a pokemon who couldn't control itself, and he fought back the vile that climbed up his throat at that primitive, predatory creature that presented itself and then, more so when it became evident that such a creature was to fight. Briefly, his eyes strayed to the avian by his side, which was currently busy preening its feathers with all the grace he expected it to. Sharp and focused - he believed those to be keys to winning any battle. But was this really going to be a battle, or something pointless once more?
"Pound." As soon as the timburr was off, brandishing that heavy chunk of wood it carried on its back to hit that yellow mouse on the head with Jayden cleared his throat and watched, vaguely fascinated as skarmory lifted up its beak and clicked its beak at its foe on the opposite side. "Leer, then Assurance." Maybe he was growing a soft side for them just because they were babies, or maybe it was just because he was stunned at how two creatures from the same typing could be so different, in so many ways. A few seconds of pondering this came and left, and in the end, he decided that he honestly couldn't have cared less either way.
The Pikachu, too, was busy being disgusted by the drooling mess of a Gible. How dare Mordecai send him out with the baby creature! Flavius liked to think that he was much better than that, worth far more. He drew a foot back to give the thing a square kick in the rump --
"Flavius, watch yourself -- "
Bonk.
Flavius squeaked and rubbed at the top of his head, between his ears, where the plank of wood had hit him. He growled, shrieking for Mordecai to give him battle commands. The Pikachu was getting serious. "All right, Flavius, start off with a Thunder Wave to slow that Timburr down. I want you to add a Thundershock to it too." So the Pikachu gave the man a curt nod, before letting loose two bolts of electricity of equal bite. They homed in on the fighting-type Pokémon like a magnet.
On the other hand, Achilles was left behind. He felt a chill run through his little body as the Skarmory gave him the hardest side-look possible. Only then did he realize that the Skarmory was sailing straight at him, beak stretched out and knife-like feathers spread. He squealed, began to run away, only to discover in dismay that he was not fast enough. The Pokémon tumbled head over heels, landing on his stomach. He sniffed, sobbed a bit, then decided that he was particularly angry.
A trainer who couldn't even control his own pokemon. Jayden gave a smirk, though refrained from saying anything, because his mouth tended to get him more trouble than it was worth. Instead, he busied himself with thinking of what to do after both attacks connected - which they would and, he noted with a mildly happy nod, they did, in the end - and basking in the brief stab of satisfaction the high-pitched squeak provided him, even if it did come from a pokemon and not its trainer.
"Bide." He drawled lazily, not even batting an eye as the timburr shook from head to toe, taking both electric attacks straight on. It couldn't dodge by itself, therefore it would face the consequences. That was how life works, and arceus damned if he wasn't going to grind that into their little minds as soon as possible. Things that couldn't think had to learn from the only other thing that communicated to them, and that was pain.
He wasn't sure if it was dealing with a baby that made it so easy for skarmory to dodge the thing's attack - then again, he had to remind himself that the bird was also a baby - but it did, swerving to one side to evade the bundle of screaming mess before curving around and lashing its beak out again, hoping to hit something painful. Personally, he hoped it hit somewhere vital, somewhere that made it hurt the most.
Timburr - bide Skarmory - dodged outrage, peck @ gible
Mordecai recognized that particular move of the Timburr's. The creature's entire body went red and began to quake. Time to shift gears then. "Flavius," the breeder called, "hit the Timburr with a Leer. Leave it alone for now, and help Achilles out a bit, would you?" The Pikachu bounced from foot to foot, giving the fighting Pokémon the most menacing look that he could muster up. It was an angry expression, mostly thanks to the Pound that he'd received earlier.
Achilles screeched as the Skarmory's metal beak dug into his thick hide. He thrust his claws into the ground, then pawed dust and dirt into the Skarmory's eyes with a well-aimed Sand-Attack. He used that time to garner up the rest of his fury, until his little body was quaking. He propelled himself forward with his stubby legs, thrusting himself against the Skarmory with a Tackle. Flavius rolled his eyes, red cheeks sparking, before he released a second Thundershock in the baby bird Pokémon's direction.
Gible: Sand-Attack and Tackle at Skarmory Pikachu: Leer at Timburr, Thundershock at Skarmory
Pain. Painful because of the electricity coursing through its wings and the not-so-painful collision that spun the dual type out of the air in a spraling circle to land clumsily on the dirt. It hurt all over, but it wasn't done yet, and two on one only meant diversions and red herrings. Instead, it focused a piercing glare on the other baby pokemon and then dove forward, flipping out a wing to smack the gible across its head.
In the other corner, Timburr gave two shudders, like electrical currents passed through its body. Once, from recieving the attack and then, another time from anticipation for what was to come. Jayden said nothing, only watched, with a curious mix between excitement and pure apathy that was a strange sensation indeed.
Timburr - bide Skarmory - leer + assurance @ gible
The baby Gible bounced around with glee. The Sand-Attack and Tackle had worked! He was feeling rather proud of himself and was a little too busy celebrating. He made a strange yelping noise as the Skarmory smacked Achilles across the head with a hard wing. For some reason, the Pokémon's leering was not very intimidating. Perhaps it was the sand and dust in its eyes that covered part of the creature's red irises. Still, the dragon Pokémon hissed, outright furious. Mordecai knew better than to let the Pokémon go into a second Outrage though, especially while that Timburr was dormant in a Bide. He had to take advantage of it.
"Achilles!" Mordecai called. "Hold yourself. Tackle this time." With that, the Gible glanced over his shoulder, gave his trainer a resolute nod (finally), before hurling himself at the Skarmory again.
Flavius wrinkled his nose, studying the Timburr closely. Something big was going to happen soon, and he had to be prepared for it. So the Pikachu's cheeks sparked with electricity again, but this time, sent a good Thunder Wave in the Skarmory's direction.
Gible: Tackle at Skarmory Pikachu: Thunder Wave at Skarmory
Enough was enough was enough. It might've been able to dodge that thunder wave from the pikachu but the second the head of that gible rammed into the skarmory's steel abdomen it saw stars and collapsed, feathers spread wide on the dirt the second Jayden's fingers flicked out the sphere to recall it. They'd learned something, so it wasn't completely useless, but he'd made it clear that they were here to win, and out of all of the pokemon on his team he thought the new hatchlings understood him the most. He didn't like being proven wrong.
"Move it." The trainer snapped, twisting his head around and twisting his lips into something of a scowl. "Better not miss, either." In response, the fighter's nose twitched, its entire body turning a bright shade of scarlet as the energy released out and it exploded, swinging the piece of wood on its back wildly at the closest thing in vicinity.
And it would've probably been better, too, if it had actually been for the pikachu instead of that dribbling baby. He scowled. Continued scowling. Would keep scowling until the very end.
Achilles shrieked as the bright light felt like a bulldozer had smacked into him. He went tumbling across the arena, completely dazed. "You're getting better," he reassured the miserable Pokémon, who sniffed, because he was very close to tears. Mordecai quickly returned the Pokémon to his Pokéball, then eyed Flavius for how well the Pikachu was doing.
The Pokémon rubbed his little paws together as he watched the Timburr who was freed of paralysis. This would not do. He cast a Wish in preparation for whatever tricks the fighter had up its nonexistent sleeve, then let loose a second Thundershock because that was the only attack that he knew. The bolt of lightning surged towards the fighting Pokémon, just as it had earlier in the battle.
He knew that he should've felt at least a small pang of happiness when the gible was recalled, both for the sake of the baby pokemon's disappearance out of his line of sight and the fact that all of skarmory's work hadn't gone to waste, like he'd thought it had. But it was going wrong, everything was going horribly wrong, because the minute timburr chose to release its fury on a pokemon like that was the point where the advantage had been turned against their favor.
Not to mention the fact that the situation now was no better, Timburr's body jerking slightly as the electricity hit and stopped it, momentarily, in its tracks. Yet he still believed that he could win because he told himself, again, that he would win, so he must. "Pound." Pride. That was what it was about now, at this point. Pride got him into situations that he'd never imagined finding himself in - dangerous, uncomfortable positions, but he never learned then, so certainly not now.
The Timburr's fist connected with Flavius' head again. He squeaked, mostly out of fury. It wasn't a particularly fearsome noise, but it was one that the Pikachu made involuntarily anyways. Under normal circumstances, he would have been rather bothered and embarrassed by it. Instead, he mustered up the most intimidating Growl that he could make. The Pikachu pulled his lips back to bare his teeth at the Timburr, and he stomped his foot to add to the effect, making sure that the other Pokémon knew that he was not happy.
And then he let loose with a third Thundershock.
Mordecai made a mental note to teach the poor guy some new attacks when he got the chance.
Gible: fainted Pikachu: Thundershock + Growl at Timburr
Timburr's back had always been bad, made painfully clear to him the first day they'd met. Perhaps this was why the creature believed in the use of electrotherapy to cure it of the condition, and maybe that was why it insisted on getting hit with every single jolt of electricity the pikachu threw its way, insisting to itself that the last one simply hadn't 'hit the right spot'. And, he supposed, that statement in itself might've held some humor in it if he didn't truly believe that was the case, and instead it came out bitter, like bile.
The fighting type shook - and quite visibly, this time, at that - and fell, like it'd always fallen those two times before, but even as the smoke curled up on its body and created a thick, heavy stench of something burning Jayden knew it was over, and he'd really truly lost this time around. Shocking, and he didn't even have the energy to smile for the sake of that terrible pun as he recalled the pokemon and instead, just stared at the dry dirt below.
He turned, slowly, towards Mordecai, gave the man a nod, then left without saying goodbye.
Timburr - fainted Skarmory - fainted (I'm not sure how the level gains worked on this one, do you know?)
Flavius, naturally, what he felt was appropriate to the situation: flex a non-existent bicep. He bounced back to Mordecai, sailing head-first into the man's stomach with elation. Mordecai barely managed to catch the creature in time, mostly because he had returned Jayden's nod. He sensed that the teenager was not particularly talkative, and even more terse after losing a battle. Quite frankly, Mordecai hadn't expected the Pikachu to do so well, but he was proud anyways that the electric mouse had succeeded.
"Good going," he said, rubbing the Pikachu's head before exiting.
