This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"dirge? oh, one of the riolu," J said, nodding at the unvaccinated creature. neo was lucky enough to get both of them; he figured that it was for some sort of research project. the trainer's expression turned into a half-amused one as he thought about dredge.
the battle wasn't very good for the onix. it was incredibly stubborn, yes, but it was also often left in mental anguish after losing to a baby pokémon. look at the humiliation.
"how about a ralts this time? roth," J called, summoning forth the psychic-type. it waved meekly at the riolu. "it won't fight back, i think." he glanced at the ralts, whose gaze was on the riolu.
"Fighting back wouldn't be a problem, not if his confidence is well-deserved," she said, and that last bit was directed more towards Dirge than it was J.
Dirge waved cheerfully in return at the ralts, wished it good luck (it would need it!), and slipped into a combat stance.
Dirge opened with the usual: agility. He glanced back at Neo, who gestured him forward, and he followed with a quick attack.
roth waved back in a friendly manner, and nodded at it -- its speed soon surprised the psychic-type, and it was left running away from the canine, before it finally teleported a distance away, surprised. so this wasn't a game, huh.
Running wasn't the same as tanking, but he recognized the pattern from the battle with the onix all the same. In chase, he followed, closing the distance from the teleport as speedily as he could, with two quick attacks.
the double speeded riolu was a horror for roth. the speeding canine bowled into it, and it tumbled over with a squeak before it released a burst of confuse ray in the heat of the fight.
the two attacks pummelled roth, one after the other, and the ralts raised its hands to its forehead, focusing. suddenly, it split into several copies using double team, all of them in the same stance before seizing the riolu with confusion.
"roth," J cautioned, but the ralts was solemn as it focused its psychic energies. "... stop."
the ralts glanced back at its trainer, slowly lowering its hands. its clones too, did the same. "no."
The confusion struck with a high-pitched keen in his mind, and Dirge gripped his head, shaking it as if he could toss the pain out of his head with enough effort.
"Withdraw! Step back," she said. Not understanding why he couldn't just quick attack all the ralts he saw, Dirge did step back, putting a bit of distance between himself and the many ralts.
"Agility again. Don't let your advantages slide next time. Okay. Now, wait. The copies will fade eventually."
While Dirge stood en garde, she took out her pokedex and took the ralts' entry.
J stared at roth, and the little pokémon stared back, and neither said anything. with a teleport, the ralts and its copies disappeared from view and reappeared behind the riolu.
For a second, Dirge had no idea where the the ralts (and its doubled team) went. Being unhelpful, instead of letting him know, Neo said, "Try listening. Or smelling."
He did both.
Then he whirled around rushed in for quick attack and a quick attack.
the ralts took both kicks to its chest, and dropped to the ground before J recalled it. he decided to spare it the anger and frustration of not being able to attack the enemy; roth seemed murderous, moreso than dredge had been.
"lol" was what J was thinking, but he remained expressionless and emotionless as he nodded at neo. "how's that?"
"Fantastic. I can't keep this up though. Maybe I should challenge Jasper and let him get his ass kicked. It'd be good for keeping his ego normal sized."
Dirge shrugged. He thought his ego was just fine. Neo sighed and recalled him to his pokeball.
She smiled--on purpose, it was weird to smile these days--and said, "Thanks for this, by the way. Don't suppose you've caught any other new pokemon while I've got you out here?"
J returned her smile with a half-smile of his own, the usual one where it would seem that he was, yet wasn't, and reached for a pokéball. "i've never used this one," he said, and clicked the clasp on it.
a munchlax emerged, chewing on a half-eaten apple it had been gnawing on since it entered the pokéball. upon seeing neo, it pointed a finger in the air and chattered excitedly.
Neo ducked for cover like her life depended on it, the munchlax darting across the space where she just was.
She grabbed her pokedex, still a bit alarmed, and took down a new entry. <It conceals food under the long fur on its body. It carts around this food stash and swallows it without chewing.>
