This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Di Manes itself was already creepy; somehow Esme's gym was creepier. The lighting couldn't disguise the fact that Thalia was traveling deeper and deeper into a giant crypt full of long dead champions, all for the sake of a badge.
"The things I do for pokemon," she muttered wearily. At her side, the vulpix looked up, twitched her nose, and kept on walking.
Who really devoted their entire lives to guarding a bunch of corpses? They were dead. They didn't care whether you guarded them or not. There wasn't much the dead cared about at all, for that matter. It just seemed so unnecessary. These trainers could be doing real things.
Whatever, whatever. She was just here for her badge.
The Di Manes gym's arena was beyond the final set of tombs. For an arena, it was small and luxuriously decorated. Someday, it'd become a burial site itself, and the gym would move even deeper into the caverns.
The arena was pitch black. Esme lit a lantern sometimes, but she knew the gym by heart and so did her trainers. For the most part, light was irrelevant here.
She heard footsteps, not the soft steps of her trainers and the crypt's attendants, and a voice she didn't recognize.
From the darkness, Esme spoke. "A challenger, I presume? You waste your time. Your enemy is out there. The only thing here for you is a grave--if you can earn it."
And a badge, she neglected to add, because that was what any trainer came here for. "The challenge is three pokemon against three, single battle. The location is, obviously, here. The darkness will be yours is brave."
The pursuit hit with a resounding blow, sending the shuppet shooting through the darkness. Weakly, it regained its composure, and fired a shadow ball. The shuppet looked ready to follow up with any option of attacks, but it stopped short.
Esme's voice cut through the darkness. "Curse."
The shuppet did as ordered, and it collapsed onto the ground before returning to its pokeball.
"You're better than I feared." Esme sent out a second pokemon, a haunter.
circe hit by pursuit circe used shadowball circe used curse circe fainted!
Zebstrika froze, paralyzed by the effects of curse, and Thalia recalled it instantly. Probably best not to kill someone else's pokemon when they'd let her borrow it.
The haunter totally dodged the psychic, because ow that'd hurt. It returned fire with acc boost curse.
Esme had to admit, this was not an ideal strategy. A frown crossed her face, unseen in the darkness, but she found herself grudgingly impressed. "You should be out fighting scourge," she said coolly, but it was a compliment if she'd ever given one.
