This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Strength was a desire, a dream, at times. It was something that he had grasped securely in his hands yet the next day, slipped through like they were made of silk. He thought that, given time, he would get to understand what strength was, and if physical and mental strength outweighed one another or balanced out, in the end. And that was the problem. He was strong, but not strong. It was frustrating.
There wasn't anything wrong with being in a forest. The problem was that he'd somehow released natu unconsciously, and it'd taken to pecking at the nearby bushes for berries, or some sort of food. And, like normal, there was something in him that was torn between checking if they were poisonous before the dual type managed to swallow one or let it play out naturally, not really managing to get to a decision even as seconds ticked by.
And he had to wonder, was this the extent of his strength?
"into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely."

You are a little queen, a self-entitled little brat with a graceful stride. You were so very hungry this afternoon, positively famished, and so, you decided to lop from your cozy spot in the sunlight to a berry bush a ways away. Its was your favorite berry bush - delcious, succulent, and ripe, and you would purr at the extravagant way they would squish in your mouth.
However, a pasty boy was there before you, and a wretched bird feasting on your horde as if it were for every woodland creature to enjoy! With a great noise of rage, you leaped at the bird. You would bat it from the air like a kitten its catnip mouse.
What came next was a surprise, the shape a blur as it barreled out of the bushes and slammed into the bird, disturbing that bush and dropping several red berries onto the forest floor. And when natu got up and Jayden walked over to examine the berries there was the tiniest prick on one of them, crimson red tinting its beak as it flapped both wings. Hopefully, it had the brains to at least not swallow.
"Get up." The creature staggered to its feet and he told himself he shouldn't question why this creature was here, only that it had attacked so it must be brought down. "Leer, Night Shade." Dark purple bubbled and scattered tree branches, shrubs, underbrush in its wake. Earlier, he'd questioned the extent and idea of strength. This, he decided, would be the answer to that question.

You yowled at the leer, flicking your tail with an angry humor. Who was this cretin bird that dared! Your sapphire fur stood on end as the night shade surrounded you, and you arched you back at the horrible birds face. You panted heavily as the clear forest air returned, the sun, the mottle greens and browns that were your home. You circled beneath the bird with a brooding disdain before going at it again.
Shinx was hit by leer and night shade Shinx used tackle. Shinx used spark.
Focus on what was up front. He knew that, knew natu knew that, but for some reason it turned back to him with that idiotic expression it always wore and blinked, like looking for some form of appraisal. And he'd been ready to open his mouth and deliver some stinging retort, too, but it let out a cry of indignation as the shinx pounced on it again and he decided that it was a suitable punishment, if any.
Electricity must've stimulated something, though, because the moment those tell-tale yellow jolts started appearing in the creature's fur the avian's eyes widened inexplicably and it bolted to the right, much faster and alert than he'd ever seen before, but didn't bother to acknowledge. "Night Shade." And it was more than happy to oblige, too, judging by the speed in which the black crashed towards the opponent again.

The mistress of the forest wouldn't fall for the same trick twice. You dashed into the berry bush as the night crept at you, and avoided the Natu's insolent trickery. With a whirl, you attacked again with your white teeth.
Natu gave a loud squawk as the creature came at it again, apparently resigning to fate. "Teleport!" It blinked, then let white light consume its body, ignoring the glance of Jayden's glare and the way he snapped out the command, in a moment of furious irritation.
When it cracked open its eyes again it was next to the berry bush, claws crushing the fruit. Perhaps it could be considered lucky, but natu barely had a chance to let out a sigh of relief before its trainer snapped out another "Peck!" in that same, irritated way that natu thought best not to ignore a second time.

Your face slammed into the tree trunk, and you slid down with a sparking blush. This kingdom of yours was too much effort to protect. Something terrible started pecking at your head, drilling with its sharp little beak. Some monstrosity. Irritated and defeated, you covered your paws over your head and waited for it to go away so you could flee and lick your wounds.
Shinx hit by peck. Shinx defeated. +2 lvls for natu throw a pokeball if you want it!
He made a face as the command left his lips and swiped a tongue over them, as if to retract it. But the creature already leapt to action and was upon the adversary in a second, pecking and clawing without a care for its own hide. Jayden scowled, stuffing a hand in his pocket and turning the small sphere inside out for a long moment. Didn't that thing ever think for itself?
The good news was that a pokecenter was right around the corner - he'd take it there right after, scorched feathers, beak crackling with electricity that he expected, but never came. Instead, there was nothing, silence and the sounds of natu's beak working up a frenzy. "That's enough." And the second natu pulled back he took the pokeball brandished in his right hand, aimed, and threw before the thing could get back on its feet.
