This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

It actually felt a little weird, at this point, hunting for scourge in Bellona without J. Not that Thalia would ever tell him that. Or anyone, for that matter. She was Thalia de Luca, EOS trainer and lone ranger extraordinaire. She was a total badass and she might have followers, but she'd never have friends.
God, that sounded melodramatic in her own head. Whatever, maybe she'd buy him a tin of ginseng candy in return next time she saw him. Thalia glanced over at Delilah and smiled at her.
"This is gonna be your first time fighting the scourge, right?"
This was a stupid idea. She knew that there were others who had already fought the scourge -- once, twice, multiple times -- and survived, but that didn't make her feel any better about it.
The woman smiled back at Thalia, her laughter dry. "First time fighting them on even ground, yeah." The last thing she expected was to be the one looking for scourge -- for some reason, Delilah had always imagined them coming at her.
Thalia beamed at her. "I'd love to assure you that it's no big deal and we're going to be fine," she answered. "But that would probably jinx us, so instead I'm informing you that we'll watch our pokemon die in front of us, and then be ripped limb from limb. No one will ever find our bodies."
That drew another laugh from the woman. "Oh, that sounds amazing." Her left arm throbbed. "Scourge claws and teeth don't hurt at all, you know -- it's just like getting a haircut. You don't feel a thing." Delilah rolled her shoulders, rubbing her neck with her right hand. Perhaps it was just the stress, or the prospect of facing down her worst fucking nightmare, but Delilah felt like breaking out into hysterical giggles.
"We'll probably never even feel it," Thalia said. "I mean between shock, fainting and blood-loss, there's no way we'll still be conscious by the time the pain kicks in, I'd bet money on it."
The woman rolled her eyes. "Oh, yeah. The blood flows like a waterfall and you're out like a light." Time also slows as the ice-cold claws dig into your skin, but she figured now was not the time to mention it. She eyed Thalia with a smirk. "But I'll bet you five bucks anyway."
Thalia shrugged. "You can go to the pain, or you can go somewhere else. Myself, I'll choose going somewhere else every time, and so I'll gladly take your five bucks. Buy myself some bitter powder."
The woman's nose scrunched. "How the hell do you eat that stuff?" she asked incredulously. There had been one challenge against J, and Delilah had eaten enough of the stuff for a lifetime. "It's like you guys have defunct taste buds."
They had a buddy system now. Well, it wasn't a buddy system so much as it was a power-in-numbers system. Bellona Hills was no longer rolling over for the scourge. This was fine. The scourge appreciated nothing if not a good fight and a better challenge. It required tactical adjustments though, and somewhere there was a team of scourge metagross busy projecting what line of attack would give them the highest rates of success.
In the meantime, they traveled in groups.
That didn't mean they liked each other much.
The mamoswine was the arbitrary leader, which is to say that it was the biggest, and the muk and bronzong entertained themselves by making fun of the big dumb guy behind his back.
Nevertheless, when the mamoswine reared up to signal an attack, they answered. A heavy dog set in, and the three pokemon were on the move--or at least the muk and bronzong were, setting up a pincer formation. The mamoswine just stood where he was. Neither expected the big dumb guy to comprehend anything but a zerg rush forward.
Thalia had almost forgotten they were in Bellona. Almost. She grinned at Delilah, the easy conversation slipping away. "Time for the real fun," she said. "I hope you're ready, because I don't plan on really getting eaten. Today at least. And certainly not in this manner."
Three scourge was annoying, but Thalia supposed it could always be worse. Could be four scourge! And no Delilah.
Thalia sent out mienshao, kadabra and ninetales.
