This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Light clothing, cool breeze a nice day, aside from the looming threat that hung over his head. Chase Parson was in a decent mood. In the past four days he had said goodbye to his parents, gave him his pokemon, after giving them his farewell, allowing his parents the option to release them into the wild if they wished. Three days ago his bags were packed and he was on a boat, sailing for his new home, his new adventure. His cabin was shared with another man roughly seven years older then him, that also shared his desire to adventure, they made polite small talk but didn't venture too much into their personal lives.
Two days ago he was greeted by a broad shoulder man that held a sign with his name and the names of two others trainers that he assumed were apart of his class. Briefed in a small ill ventilated room, he was given a map and few direction. Having denied the option to bring his own pokemon, he sought out the pokemon lab, the map marked it clear as day. Now less then 24 hours since he was told just why he was here and given the quick run down of all that was going on, Chase wanted to get out and get down to business. Wearing a muted colored polo shirt, snug but not tight jeans and comfortable shoes, he was a handsome traveler seeking out his first pokemon, well first for his region.
Having been around the circuit of training pokemon and even challenging both Elite Four in Kanto and Johto, he felt himself well equipped to handle what ever there was here to threaten him. Sure the ever present scare of the scourge pokemon hang around in his brain like stale air, he wasn't going to let that fear affect him. He was going to travel this region learn new things and challenge the gyms, gain a strong team that would be able to handle the virus and even head toward the Elite Four. Maybe doing a little research on his own, but that being at the bottom of list of things to do.
With lab in full view and his stride quickly closing in, he adjusted his bulky backpack, the product of his mother's packing, on his lean shoulders and powered through the last thirty feet to enter the lab.
Smell was first to hit him, the crisp clean smell he was only able to remember from visiting his grandpa in the hospital or sitting in an exam room having his arm checked out, the bone clearly broken. While it wasn't always a bad or sickening smell, but Chase's memories in a place like this were negative and his nose wrinkled for a moment in distaste.
Unsure for a moment how to bring attention to himself without seeming rude, he came forward to stand at the counter and wait for someone to notice him, his fingers tapping on it's surface.

professor cypress wasn't in. oops. ms sybil and mr krauss were, though -- the gothitelle was busy with paperwork, and had mr krauss not been chasing after a few stray rattata about the lab, the alakazam would have been sitting somewhere in the lab, pipe in mouth, tea in hand, newspaper on lap. granted, ms sybil would have none of that and immediately would send it off to work his ass off.
as soon as the trainer came up to the counter, mr krauss teleported to the front, greeting the trainer like a friendly uncle. hey there, said the alakazam telepathically, here for your first pokémon -- starter, teammate, something. it had to stop itself. not all trainers were completely new to this thing, not since eos started recruiting old hands to fight scourge in kohaku. it stroked its mustaches, a silver spoon pointed towards the table to the side.
if you'll fill up this form, a piece of paper and pen floated over to the trainer and laid before him (on it were minor details such as name and eos registration number, nothing too difficult), before the alakazam shuffled off to the table and started laying out pokéballs for chase to choose. and then come over here, you'll get to pick your pokémon. they're all vaccinated, so don't worry about fighting those hadean stuff with them. nurse joy's got your back if you need her, too. so yeah, have at 'em. just one, though.
the pokéballs were arranged in two rows, five in each.

He had watched the Alakazam with interest, it had been while since he seen pokemon tending to it's master business. It was a pleasant thought to him for a moment at least until he thought about the dangers that these pokemon where in. However, since he was being told that the pokemon he was given were vaccinated it was easy to assume that the pokemon here were the same.
Looking at the paper work he did his best to fill it out quickly but not leaving anything unanswered, in fact he found it amusing a break for humor in the dark world. The feel of the paper and pen left his hands as he pushed it forward and it was taken up by physic energy. Without any more directions he went toward the table where presented to him were 10 well selected pokemon. His blue-green eye drifted from one pokeball to the next, weighing each pokemon in his head, trying to selected the past for his adventure.
For a moment he thought back to his pokemon in Kanto, having knowledge of most of the pokemon in front of him from in fact having one somewhere else. He raised a pikachu and even a mareep. A nidoran female had evolved under his care to be a fierce nidoqueen. The one pokemon that kept coming to mind was the hoothoot. It's keen eyes and foresight ability would be useful when tracking and avoiding scourge pokemon. With an outreached hand he took the ball in his grasp and brought it closer to him, clicking the center button to release the pokemon within.
"Hoot Hoo <Hello>"
The pokemon spoke out to him and Chase had little issue to understand him, but smiled kindly toward his new pokemon, who perched happily on his outstretched arm.
"May I go now?" He asked the Alakazam within their slight mental bond, the little bird pokemon perched on his arm, tilting his head back and forth like a well oiled clock.

The Alakazam nodded sagely as Chase signed off his paperwork. It appeared that the little Hoothoot had already taken a quick liking to the man. That was always a good thing. Sometimes, there was the unfortunate event in which a Pokémon and its new trainer or researcher did not get along too well. Those situations tended to end rather uglily. <Yes, of course,> Mr. Krauss responded, handing Chase the Hoothoot's capsule. <Well, we wish you luck with your journey. Do come to visit as well though. The Professor enjoys visitors.>
