This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

She was not pleased about having to go out in public on a day like today. Then again, Ava Dahl was rarely pleased about anything. Her only goal now was to eliminate the scourge. Today was the first step.
After what seemed like far too long of a walk, Ava entered the laboratory, shook off her umbrella by the doorway, and looked around. Seeing nobody, she called out, "Is there anyone here? I was told that new Eos researchers were to report to this building." Maybe she could just find a Pokemon wandering around, take it, and leave; no human interaction necessary. But no, she was above stealing and her luck was not that good anyway.
hullo, hullo, a voice boomed telepathically into ava's mind. the window opened itself, and an alakazam poked its head out of the gap. its mustaches twitched as the raindrops fell on them. it quickly pulled itself back into the warmth (and dry) of the laboratory, before opening the door for the female.
cypress laboratories, i assume you're here to get your starter, so, the psychic-type said, moving with precision. its movements were like a well-oiled machine as it whirled around finding the necessary forms and stationery and handed them to ava. fill this in, and i'll be back -- wait, researcher? researchers get this.
as the alakazam teleported off, a pokédex floated towards the female.
Ava blinked. Had that window just opened on its own? Suddenly, a Pokemon. Alakazam. Not what she was expecting. She wondered if she had to speak to it or if it could read her mind, but decided to talk anyway.
"Hello," she said simply, acknowledging the psychic-type with a nod. Surely this wasn't the professor. But it sure seemed to know what it was doing. Ava watched, curious, as the humanshape Pokemon worked, surprisingly quickly. And then in the blink of an eye, it was gone.
Ava stared at the floating Pokedex for a moment before reaching out to take it, and examined it thoroughly while she waited for the Alakazam to return. A rare rush of excitement flooded through her, but was quickly dismissed. She could not afford to be hasty and overeager.
the alakazam soon returned and showed the female to where the pokéballs were. they were in a glass casing, and before each sphere was a label indicating the species of the pokémon within. the alakazam stroked its mustaches calmly. okay, it said in a genial tone, have your pick of one of these! if you want a description of any of them, just let me know. it peered at the researcher, then left her to her own devices.
She was shown to a collection of poke balls, each labeled. Ava put the Pokedex in her bag and moved toward the case, looking over the labels. There were choices of Pokemon from all over, some of them more common than others. One in particular caught her eye.
"This one, please," the researcher said, pointing to the ball labeled "Larvesta". She knew that it was a rare Pokemon, and as a researcher, rare Pokemon were important. Fire was Ava's preferred type anyway.
TAGSvertigo NOTES it has literally taken me all day to pick a starter
the alakzam nodded, and the pokéball levitated out from the glass casing and laid before her. mr krauss tapped the ball once, and from it the larvesta appeared. it hummed its name once, then turned to glance at its trainer expectantly.

Ava watched the poke ball move in the same way her Pokedex had moved, with the invisible psychic power of the Alakazam before her. She was pleased to see the fire- and bug-type before her; it looked like it would make a good partner. "Thank you," she said politely, picking up the poke ball and looking down at the Larvesta. "Come along." The Pokemon nodded and followed her out the door of the lab and off toward Proserpina City.
