This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

GRAND OPENING !
Welcome to KOHAKU REGION's grand opening! If you're interested in joining, come check out our grand opening giveaway!
sneaker's clack on the sidewalk as a backpack thumps up and down on rowena's back. she was sprinting to the ranger's union, in case you were wondering. the faster she can get there, the faster she can meet her partner, and the faster she can find her family/avenge their deaths. the faster this whole process goes, the better. come to think of it, she thinks, panting slightly as she makes a stop at the door of the ranger's union, if kohaku's small, that'd be better too.
she taps her finger on the doorbell and puts on her best smile. @a mod, please

It is not Sa'di who greets Rowena just yet. Instead, it is a bipedal, jackal-like Pokémon that answers the door. The Lucario studies Rowena with its eyes glowing with aura. Shirazi does not need words from the prospective Pokémon ranger. In fact, the Lucario was content with reading the girl's heart and her aura. There was a surprising amount of information that humans and Pokémon alike could hide from others.
<State your business,> the Lucario says, eyes narrowing. She will not have idle people waste the head ranger's time. It was, however, no secret that the war on Scourge worsened each day, and Sa'di needed as many people willing to fight as possible. On top of that, the partner Pokémon that were held at the Ranger Headquarters were getting rather restless. They needed human partners soon and were itching to fight.
waiting, the girl starts to wrap her hair into a tight bun when the door opens she immediately drops her arms to her side, looking to the lucario and saluting, soldier-like. probably cheesy- actually definitely cheesy- but she was an aspiring ranger, and that meant treating pokemon just as she would treat their trainers. and rowena was the sort of person who'd salute to sa'di, so why not her lucario?
something caught her off guard. a little voice rang out from inside her head, and rowena stumbled before realizing that the lucario was speaking through the mind. unfortunately, the girl was still a little freaked out, and decided she'd rather speak aloud. "i'm an aspiring ranger." she starts, holding her hand out for the lucario to shake (rowena recalled something about lucarios being very polite and human-like). "rowena mcdermott." she states her name clearly. ZULF ?

<Rowena Mcdermott, is it?> the Lucario says, and gives the girl an approving nod. Polite, good. So the Lucario thrust out her own paw and gave the girl a confident shake of the hand. <Rowena Mcdermott, aspiring ranger, you may enter.> And with that, the Lucario stepped aside, not only to allow Rowena in, but also to make room for a person already inside the ranger's headquarters.
"Thank you, Shirazi," the crimson-haired ranger said. Sa'di's eyes glanced at Rowena from head to toe. More recruits. Good. Now to find out whether handing a Pokémon to Rowena was worth it. Partner Pokémon had to be carefully preened and trained in preparation for the day that they set out with their partners. It was a tiring business, but Sa'di would not settle for anything less. Any mistakes in a partner Pokémon's training could endanger both the Pokémon and their human companion. "I would like to hear why you are here," the woman said, gesturing for Rowena to follow her back to her office.
"Do not say that you are here to become a Pokémon ranger. I already know you are here to become one."
sure enough, the woman salutes. rowena gives a polite nod, as if to say nice to meet you. sa'di was a confident woman, that was readily apparent just by looking at her. flaming red hair, stern eyes and a confident posture. she could learn to like this woman. strong, brave, and kind-- but wait, what did sa'di just ask her? rowena honestly didn't know how to answer such a question. it seemed quite invasive and almost rude to ask. she didn't feel comfortable giving reasons to a complete stranger...
but she would have to, right? rowena's eyes darkened, her brain lost in thought. why did she want to be a ranger? was there any specific reason to be a ranger? sure, she wanted to travel through kohaku, but the idea of being a ranger was never really important to her. rowena had been pushed to be a ranger, well because, rangers travel, and that's precisely what she wanted to do. was there anything wrong with that? probably.
"i'm from bacchus." rowena blurts, following sa'di into her office. "my father worked as a researcher in lake pax." the aspiring breeder gives sa'di a look with pursed lips. the woman would piece it together. ZULF ?

Sa'di pauses in her footsteps as Rowena explained where she was from. The woman turned on her heel, and at those words, her facial expression seemed to soften. "I see," the woman replied. She gave Rowena a quick nod, then nodded at Shirazi. The Lucario briefly dismissed herself from the room. "I apologize for my forwardness," Sa'di said. "You are no longer a prospective Ranger. You have already proven yourself."
On cue, Shirazi returned with ten Pokémon marching in a single-file line behind her. Sa'di had returned to her desk to retrieve a styler. The woman handed Rowena the curious item, before saying, "Examine each of these Pokémon carefully. One of them will be your partner Pokémon." And then, she added, "You have my faith."
rowena's violet-red eyes wander through the line, but always seem to come back to the sweet, brown and yellow furred flying squirrel. it's tail twitched in an anticipation, as the emolga had easily returned the interest, mimicking the woman in front of him. the staring went on for another few beats before rowena shook her hair with her left hand and accepted the capture styler in the right.
she looked back at the emolga quickly, anxious to see if the connection continued, but the electric type was instead socializing with the pansage next to it. so rowena instead scanned the other pokemon in the line, seeing none that particularly stood out like the emolga did. so instead of searching more, she bent to the emolga's level and tapped it's shoulder carefully. "hey, i don't mean to interrupt.." she waited until the emolga eyed her, "but would you like to journey with me?" the emolga gave a little giggle before looking off, thinking about it's answer.
finally, the pokemon gave a slight nod, although it had gotten rowena worried there for a moment. it quickly hopped on to it's new partner's shoulder, giving her a wink. "this is the one." rowena exclaimed to sa'adi, saluting her once more. "we'll make kohaku proud." ZULF ?

Sa'di and her Lucario saluted the new ranger back. "We're depending on you," Sa'di said, nodding at the Emolga. "Take care of each other, and if the going gets tough, never forget that it's okay to draw up a tactical regroup." The woman handed Rowena her stylus, and with a final wave, watched as the new ranger set off on her very own journey.
