This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Today was the day he was going to get his first.. group of Pokemon he could breed with! With a skip in his step, which meant the occasional oh-my-gosh-i'm-dying-because-i-just-tripped-over-flat-ground, he headed toward the Breeders' Guild. [break] Miles didn't personally know Lady Mercedes, but Miles knew that she was the greatest breeder in Juno City, and rightly so, she was royalty as well. He climbed up the stone stairs and knocked wimpily on the door. After waiting for a response, he found that there were knockers on the door. [break] "Oh dear. I am soo very observant." he muttered to himself, raising the closest knocker and clanging it against the metal behind it.
Mary the Secretary was absent today. So this time, it was Lades Mercedes, herself, who answered the door (oh, the horror!). Fortunately, for Miles, she'd had some mild success with Eos breeders, which meant that she was in a fairly decent mood. Unfortunately, this meant that her curtness-meter was only down by 10%. The woman raised a brow as she opened the door to the Breeder's Guild. "The door was open," she noted, "though you are correct. It is proper and polite to knock on the door."
She gestured for the man to follow her into her palace. "Do not waste my time," the woman stated. "I have plenty of papers for you to fill out once more. It appears that they were damaged by water as they left Eos' headquarters. The nerve of them." Lady Mercedes was, more than always, bothered by Eos. She didn't dislike them though; Lades Mercedes would tolerate them as long as they kept her reputation afloat.
"I haven't got all day."
With that, she turned on a heel and headed towards her office.
Lady Mercedes, in all her glory, appeared through an apparently open door. It looked pretty closed to Miles. Oh well, at least she didn't explode at him.[break] As Lady Mercedes told Miles that he had to re-file his paper work, he just gave a huff. He hadn't taken that much time to fill them in the first time, but it definitely was not a wanted second occurence.[break] "Yes, my Lady!" he responded, following her toward her office. It seemed kind of far away. He tripped up on a small crack between the laid stones, and righted himself without much of a sound.[break] "Hopefully she didn't see that.. or hear it for that matter, since it seems like she's got some sort of super-human hearing.." he commented to himself.
Titles, good. Always good. Miles knew his manners. Still, she told him, "Please refrain from tripping over yourself." The woman led him to her office, which was held behind a heavy, oaken door. A Mr. Mime gave a slight bow to the woman before opening the door for her. At the Breeders' Guild, Lady Mercedes was a queen.
"Take a seat," she said, gesturing to one of the cushy chairs before her desk. "You will find the new Eos forms upon my desk." A fountain pen rested beside the forms. "I have been expecting you, though. As soon as you have filled out the forms, we shall begin the second phase of the reason you have come here."
Only just behind Lady Mercedes' office was the supercomputer that held a database of all the Pokémon who had hatched from her eggs.
"Ah, and please do not forget to add your name." She could not believe how many people forgot to fulfill that simple instruction.
Dang. She did hear him trip.[break] While they walked toward her desk, she procured sheets for him to fill out, noting that he should fill in his name. Silly instruction.[break] He looked at the form, filling in his name first. Miles... Vergar... He continued down the rest of the form, filling in his age, place of birth, and birthdate.[break] With a triumphant flourish of the pen, he handed the form back over to Lady Mercedes.[break] "Here you go, my Lady!" He didn't know there would be a second evaluation either. Just a day full of surprises he supposed.
"Excellent," the woman said, pleased that Miles had remembered to fill in his name. She folded the form into thirds, then gestured for a Vulpix resting upon a cushion to step forward. The Pokémon leaped onto a stool, and as Lady Mercedes held out a stick of red wax, the Pokémon lit a weak ember to melt it. Lady Mercedes dripped the wax onto a beige-colored envelope, then stamped it with the Breeder's Guild seal. She handed it to the Vulpix, who took it gingerly in her mouth, then bounced out of the woman's office.
"Follow me, Master Vergar," Lady Mercedes said as she rose from her throne. She gestured for Miles to follow, then disappeared through a door in the back of her office. She strolled down the long hallway until she had reached a locked chamber. A red light scanned the woman's retinas, and then there was the mechanical whirr and click of the door unlocking. She stepped in, leaving the door open for Miles, before inputting a password in the super computer at the heart of the room. A holographic display appeared, revealing a total of ten projected Pokémon.
"You are to take two," she said. "They are my gifts to you."
As Miles handed the completed forms to Lady Mercedes, a cute little Vulpix bounded up to her and continued to light fire to a wax seal. The Lady stamped his forms shut with a resounding pound. The Vulpix took the forms off somewhere, probably to be archived.[break] Lady Mercedes motioned for Miles to follow her into a large room with a large computer in the middle. She entered a password, and a hologram dispenser launched virtual Pokemon into the air. The Pokemon seemed all to be walking, sitting, then using a move that exemplified their species. It was an awe-inspiring experience.[break] Of the 10 Pokemon that were in a rotating circle in the room, he was allowed two. Immediately, the Shiny Houndour sparked his interest. Shiny meant peculiar, which was something Miles exemplified. The Shiny Numel also seemed to be calling his name.[break] "Could I have the Shiny Houndour and Shiny Numel, please?" he asked, looking now at Lady Mercedes.
"Very well," the woman said, and tapped the holographic images of the Houndour and the Numel. "An excellent choice." The holographic displays flickered, and only the Houndour and Numel remained. "Shiny, is that what you call them?" the woman asked. "Their colorations are an indicator of their vaccinations. They will be immune to the Hades virus, but this does not make them immune to any damage that the Scourge may wreak upon them."
Her eyes flashed. "I trust no harm will come to these Pokémon." Unlike Professor Cypress and Sa'di, Lady Mercedes had full confidence that her Pokémon would come marching back someday. She did not believe that she was sending her Pokémon off to their deaths. In fact, she was much more reassured that Miles was venturing out into the world with one of her Pokémon.
"Well, go forth and be fruitful, then."
