Deryn should have just moved on – she knew she should – but she couldn’t help but stop and stare at the scene for a moment. She had seen graffiti, rubbish fires and drunk people before, but never together. Oh, and let’s not forget the mildly disturbing laugh.

Common sense, better judgement and everything else told her not to say anything; she should just carry on walking and not care. But she didn’t. Instead, Deryn found herself walking right up to the drunken idiot, sneering, “Hey Picasso. You gonna clean that up?” She pointed at the spray painted ‘work of art’.

“What’re you even doing here?” Proserpina City wasn’t exactly known as a place for living it up and getting pissed off your face. In an alley. The only people who loitered in alleys, from what Deryn remembered, were people who were up to no good and homeless people

Ew. Deryn didn’t want to catch homeless people germs.
