This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

In this place, where there was nothing but silence and the all-encompassing darkness, she could hear the boy -- and the woman's mouth turned down slightly.
Yes, left to his own thoughts, he did briefly wonder if Eseme could see and hear him, much more accustomed to the dark than he was. He forced himself to brush that off with a wide shake of his head (could she also see that, he wondered?). Didn't matter. What mattered was winning.

Hm. This wasn't a very interesting battle so far. Of course, she had absolutely no intention of losing either -- Esme always fought to win. She wasn't sure about this challenger (would he succeed or not?), but the woman would make him prove himself at the very least.
Another pokemon; wise choice, but that wouldn't convince her to go any easier. If anything, her own pokemon had already taken pity on this trainer. She silently folded her arms across her chest.

Part of Jayden wondered what Eseme thought of the battle, and the way it was going so far. Some other, smaller, more miniscule part of him wondered how she felt about him as a challenger now, and if it differed from the only words she spoke to him at the beginning of everything, but he drowned out that part. He wasn't supposed to care about these kinds of things.
If Jayden took a quick peek into the inner workings of Esme's mind, he would have been sorely disappointed. There was nothing remotely interesting that the woman thought of Jayden. He was simply another challenger, another Eos trainer to be tested by her. The woman did take her responsibilities as a gym leader very seriously though. In fact, this was precisely why she put her entire efforts behind each and every battle. Best to be beaten here by a trainer than to be eaten by the Scourge, no?
