This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Darkness was darkness, the absence of light, and, in this case, the absence of sound. He wrinkled up his nose, at the smell and heavy, humid air that made perspiration bead up on his arms and the curve of his neck, wind biting at his brow. Some people told him, on his way to that mines, that there were ghosts everywhere, and this was the source of them, that he should be afraid. Why? They shrugged their shoulders when he asked, responding with a simple 'just because'. Darkness opened up thoughts, helped the mind think - kind of nice, in an ominous way.
Jasper was easy, and he felt his ego flare at that, puffing out its chest and threatening to break out of his skin. And he would've let it, too, if he hadn't seen the scourge, battled with the scourge, felt the raw power seeping from them that made Jasper comparable to training wheels, with somebody helping him along every step of the way, so Jasper was nothing. To get stronger meant to cross hurdles, push limits, test boundaries.
"Hello?" Rocked on his heels, leaning back. "I'm here for a gym battle!"
"into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely."

He was silhoutted against the bright light outside. So bright, it made her wince and shield her eyes. Annoying. Another challenger had come, trekking through these winding caverns and canyons to find her in this dusty burrow. Heavy, velvet, red curtains shut out the thin daylight. She stood on a a square of red carpet over a dungeon's stone floor. Her small, empathetic lips moved in operation.
"The challenger is aware that he shall not pass onward if he is found lacking?"
With a gesture of her hand, she motioned for the light he had let run around her gym and strike itself messily on the walls, to be cut and killed.
He saw her, but only for a moment - time standing still, front and center, surprise silencing what words he could've retorted (whether or not they were a greeting, he'd never know). Briefly, his mind raced back to the thought of first impressions, and how they'd seemed like the world when he'd fought Jasper. Now, in place of worry about his own presentation, was concern at the striking juxtaposition between his first hurdle and the now second. Jasper was straightforward, so his battling style was straightforward - in the darkness, anything could happen.
"Nothing less." Jayden nodded, brandishing a pokeball in his hand as the lights flickered out, hoping that it would at least hide the way he bit his lip in tight-strung anticipation.

Esme slinked along the back of the gym in the darkness, listening to her opponents breath, as her pale hand grappled for her own pokeball. This trainer did not impress her in the slightest. It was just another cocky boy who thought her haunted house wouldn't scare him. Well, she would see how far she could rattle his bones. She pulled herself to crouch in the corner of the battle arena and watch like a cat. Soon, two red eyes manifested in the darkness, glowing with a hellish inner light. A creepy giggle chilled the room.
He didn't trust her. This environment, the way every movement was emphasized and outlined in the silence felt like a standoff with a scourge, not a gym battle. Still, a surefire way to prepare himself for what was out there in the real world - intended or not - was better than wasting his time with something equivalent to training, when there was places like that in dreams.
Gallade materialized with a dull, red-white glow and Jayden narrowed his eyes, refusing to let the unknown enemy in the darkness, with its red eyes and chilling giggled that seemed to surround, get to him. Fear was power, and the ability to create fear was power he wasn't willing to give up. The mantra helped.
He was certainly a brave one, to fight in this darkness. Esme sighed quietly, soft exhale traveling and seemingly expanding through the inky black cavern. She watched as the gallade was released, the red light briefly illuminating the silhouette, before looking at her haunter. No words were needed.
With scarlet eyes that seemed to glow even more ominously, the haunter attacked.

When he squinted, he could see sillouhettes, blurry and out of focus as if to force the decision of whether to give blind commands, or trust his pokemon to do what was right for the situation. Trusting was hard for him, but eseme was no mind reader. And nothing was easier to do than bluffing in the dark.
She didn't like to talk during battles, which was fine, because Jayden didn't like to talk, either. He stuffed one hand in his pockets and waved the other in front of his face to pass the time. All that mattered here was strength.

Unlike her challengers, Esme was at home in the dark; it was where she could remain, undisturbed, uncaring about the gazes of those around her. The pitch black was her domain, and those who succeeded in spite of that were worthy of praise. (The question still remained: was this boy up to the challenge?)

Damn. Jayden bit his lower lip, because he really couldn't see a thing in here, and had no idea what the heck was going on here. Were all the gym leaders going to be like this - silent, unmoving, giving him no real way to assess how his pokemon was doing? Or would they be a mix - chatty and silent, friendly and cold? And it was frustrating, because he really didn't know.
Esme was perfectly content with allowing her haunter to do what he deemed best. Her single good eye couldn't pierce the darkness nearly as well as her pokemon could, after all. The gym leader calmly stood in place, watching and listening.

Gallade wasn't usually one for making noise, more opposed to clinging in its base evolutions, and now fiddling with its paws in its final, mature form. Was it doing well? Badly injured. Occasional slashes of blades, knock-backs and some imaginary sounds were the only ones that he could hear, and they, undiscriminating, didn't tell him a whole lot (Jayden decided that he didn't like the dark. Not at all.).
If anyone ever questioned if haunter breathed (they didn't have lungs, did they?), the answer was yes -- Esme could hear the faint, almost imperceptible sounds of his labored breathing. He wouldn't last much longer in this fight.

Being left to his own thoughts was definitely not the best idea. Now that he thought about it, Jayden hadn't exactly gotten a close look at Eseme's face in this entire ordeal, either. There'd been that split second, when she'd turned on the lights and spoken to him in that quiet, cold, voice, but that was it. The fact that he thought he saw blue somewhere only made Jayden's scowl deepen, and something in his stomach curl.
The instant she saw her haunter's glowing red eyes disappear for a single moment, the gym leader returned him and simultaneously released her next pokemon. The yamask was much less conspicuous than the haunter, but hopefully much more intelligent.
It was still dark, and he still couldn't see, but he could feel the change, see the way the red vanished and Gallade was back by his side in an instant, putting up a defensive position against this new threat. Jayden nudged it, muttering something under his breath and hating the way he felt so powerless when it was gone.
