how strange it was to be able to dream with your own pokemon. winnie looked around the arena, taking it all in. it looked quite similar to the generic arenas that one would see at official tournaments, but winnie felt as if there was something ... off about it, though she couldn't put her finger on it. was it because she was dreaming? edges seemed to blur and everything seemed so much ... brighter. oh well, some nice people had suggested the dream arena to help get her new baby pokemon some experience. "are you ready to do some battling, guys?" she asked her newest pokemon, a young drifloon and aerodactyl. the drifloon merely blinked at her in response, but the aerodactyl chirruped and nipped at her fingers. giggling, she scratched the pink pokemon under his chin. "hopefully whoever shows up won't be too strong," she murmured. both her pokemon were at such low levels; it would be a rather unexciting loss if someone showed up with experienced pokemon. though, then she wondered, was her opponent a real person, or just part of her imagination? this was a dream, was it not? ugh, this was too much to think about.

Alternatively, Mordecai was no stranger to this bizarre form of lucid dreaming. He'd gotten quite good at it, if he could say so himself. Occasionally, he found that the same Pokémon accompanied him into this arena. Tonight was not the case; he had never found himself in the arena with Poseidon and Terra at his heels. The Totodile was busy waving at the imaginary audiences while Terra hid behind the breeder. Mordecai crouched down to the Phanpy's height, rubbing the Pokémon's stout trunk. "Hello there," he called. "I'm Mordecai. Pleased to be your opponent. Here goes then," he said to her, and the Pokémon only swallowed thickly, then gave the breeder a quick nod. Mordecai patted the Pokémon on the head before straightening, then gave a wave to the girl across the arena floor. "Let's make this a good one, shall we?" he called. After all, battling was another facet that Pokémon breeders had to participate in.

when the strange man appeared at the other end of the stadium, winnie tensed up with anticipation. "alright guys, get ready," she murmured, though she was partially talking to herself to get herself mentally prepared for her first battle and even possibly her pokemons' first battle as well. "you can do it!" she cheered as she sent both her pokemon out into the field, though they didn't seem to fully realize that they were about to go to a battle. patrick merely drifted out, cooing and blinking blankly at his opponent, while lorcan took to the air, circling low. her opponent called something out, but before winnie could think of a sportsmanlike response, the battle had already started. had the man called out orders? she wasn't sure, but the phanpy and totodile were in action, launching attacks at patrick and lorcan.
the odor sleuth hit patrick, though he hardly even noticed it. the tackle, however, suddenly sent him reeling backwards, partially in surprise. he squeaked angrily and whirled around to face the phanpy, while lorcan screeched in pain as the totodile's attacks hit him squarely. indignant that she had allowed her opponent to catch her and her pokemon off guard--what kind of trainer was she, anyway?--winnie quickly called out her own commands.

By now, Mordecai had gotten to the point where he could read his Pokémon's body language so well that he could predict what attacks they would execute. On the other hand, he supposed that it was only fair if he actually called out verbal commands. "Poseidon, careful of those waves," he warned the Totodile. The Pokémon snapped his jaws, nimbly rolling out of the path of the Aerodactyl's sonic waves. Unfortunately, that left the poor croc Pokémon right in the line of the flying fossil Pokémon's fiery breath. Poseidon screeched as it singed the tip of his tail. "Steady, Poseidon," Mordecai called. "Retaliate with another Scald." So the Totodile opened his jaws wide, shooting a second burst of heated water at the Aerodactyl. On the other hand, Terra found herself shrouded in a dark miasma, and out of it came the Drifloon's long tendrils of arms. The Phanpy squirmed about, flailing her trunk as she tried to set herself free. Unfortunately, the most that she could manage were distressed cries for help. "You're going to get out of it fine," Mordecai said to her. "You're going to get out of it just fine."

maybe, perhaps, a double battle for her first battling experience wasn't the smartest idea, but she had so desperately wanted some experience for her two babies. it was just so hard to try and keep track of everything that was going on at once. fortunately, patrick seemed to be doing just fine, having landed both attacks and wrapping the little phanpy in his arms. the balloon pokemon let out a triumphant squeak as he held on, squeezing. "alright, pat, use clear smog!" winnie called out, and in an instant, the little drifloon had let out a strange gas from his body. she was about to call out another command for patrick, when lorcan's pained shriek pulled her attention. the jet of hot water had hit his wing and he spiraled in the air for a second before finally regaining control. "don't worry, lorcan! just use scary face and wing attack!" the aerodactyl quickly circled the arena before diving towards the little gator pokemon, flashing him the most intimidating face he could muster and outstretching a wing to hit the pokemon with as he flew by.

The Constrict attack was making the battle particularly messy. If Terra could somehow free herself from the pesky Drifloon's grip, things might go over a little easier. There was a particular reason why Mordecai had sent these two Pokémon into the arena together. Granted, the Constrict attack threw a wrench in any strategy that he could have surmised. Meanwhile, Poseidon would just have to hold out a bit longer on his own. "Keep trying, Terra," Mordecai called as the Phanpy continued to struggle. And then Poseidon had the living daylights scared out of him by a particularly ugly expression from the Aerodactyl. He howled, began to run towards Mordecai, but then moved in a complete U-turn to shoot another blast of boiling water in Lorcan's face.

winnie honestly could not tell how the battle was going. at the moment, it seemed to be neck and neck. while she had originally planned on having her two pokemon use teamwork, it seemed to have split into two different battles. and while patrick seemed to be doing perfectly well, lorcan was getting hit again and again with a move that he was weak to. at least he was getting some hits in as well, but winnie had celebrated too soon. lorcan, in his excitement, had chased after the totodile, dark purple flames flickering in his jaws as he readied a dragonbreath, but the little pokemon did a quick about face and landed a hot jet of water right into his face. with a shriek, the aerodactyl fell from its flight and landed in a crumpled heap. biting her lip, winnie recalled him to his pokeball, giving it a tight squeeze. he had done his best, she knew. "alright, patrick, it's all up to you!" the drifloon looked up from his spot and once he realized that the battle had become a 1 v 2, panicked and relayed attacks before winnie could call out any commands.

Alternatively, Poseidon wasn't feeling very steady on his feet, and the Clear Smog sent him into a daze. He flailed his short arms at the smog, almost as if he could swat it away. Of course, his actions were all in vain, and he slumped over with swirls in his eyes. "Rest easy," Mordecai said to the Totodile. "You did very well." Perhaps it was a little cruel to throw young Pokémon into the fighting arena, but the breeder had learned that there was no other way to get the Pokémon acclimated to what they would inevitably be driven to do as Eos recruits. It was sad, he supposed, though Mordecai always held onto the Pokémon that he sensed would be more comfortable with him than out on a battlefield. "Terra, keep trying," he called as the Phanpy continued to struggle. On the other hand, what with all the smog, he wasn't sure how much longer she'd hold on for.

the battle finally seemed to be coming to an end and what seemed like a hopeless situation was turning brighter. the totodile had fainted right after lorcan, turning a 1 v 2 into a fair 1 v 1. clenching her fist, winnie called out encouragements to patrick, words that seemed to fly right over the drifloon's head. after holding onto the struggling phanpy for so long, his arms grew very tired and his grip loosened, just enough for the other pokemon to slip away. with an indignant huff, he floated away from the phanpy, trying to keep some sort of distance. he knew that the outcome of the battle was resting on him, which felt like a lot of pressure to be quite honest and he wasn't sure if he could manage it, though he would try, very hard, for winnie's sake. "alright, patrick, use defog to clear the arena and hit 'em with another clear smog!" the drifloon let out a deep breath of air to remove the remains of his last attack, clearing the arena so that he could fix the little blue pokemon in his sights before aiming another clear smog attack.

The Phanpy trumpeted her trunk in triumph. Too bad her healing move was rendered useless without a parter to fight with. In any case, Mordecai had a feeling that Terra wanted to go out with a bang too. The Phanpy braced herself as the smog stung at her hide. She thrust her body forward, aiming straight for the Drifloon in what was, essentially, a suicide attack. And from across the arena floor, Mordecai called, "Hey, you're pretty good!"

patrick squeaked in surprise as the phanpy slammed into his little body. he hadn't been expecting that at all. pained, he let out a weak whimper, glancing back at winnie, who silently cheered him on. "just hang on a little longer, patrick!" winnie called out, a little afraid that the drifloon would lose hope before the battle was even over. "use minimize and clear smog!" with the battle nearing its end, patrick tried to make himself smaller, a harder target for the phanpy to hit, before releasing another wave of the smog at the his opponent.

That was about the final straw for Terra. The Phanpy teetered on her four feet as the Drifloon let out another whiff of the Clear Smog. Although she tried to hold her breath, the clouds of toxins still stung at her eyes. The Pokémon's legs finally gave out as she slumped on her side, swirls in her eyes. "You held out just fine," Mordecai said as the Phanpy disappeared into her Pokéball. He straightened himself, then gave Winnie a slight flick of the wrist. "That was good while it lasted," he said to her, giving the trainer his final farewells. Perhaps the next time, he'd have better luck. After all, perhaps it was best if Winnie walked away as the victor. He had gotten the impression that, in the future, it would be she who would actively pursue and cull the Scourge. Mordecai, not so much.
