This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"aaaah, don't you just love the smell of the sea?"
prosperina city had been easy to get to from juno, and at first impression, winnie had been intimidated by all the large concrete buildings and all the people just reminded her of how crowded hespera had gotten after the refugees had flooded the city. but with a bit of wandering, she had escaped the crowds and appeared onto the docks, where there were still people milling about, but they weren't surrounded by tall buildings looming over them and making her feel claustrophobic. instead, she was able to look out onto the ocean, glittering in the sun and absolutely endless. ciara, her gligar, soared overhead, silent and keeping close to her new trainer. the pokemon had proven to be quite the opposite from winnie, quiet and calculating, but the two seemed to work well enough together. giggling, the girl skipped past the crowd until she was at the end of the dock. she sat down at the edge, letting her legs dangle, and ciara glided down next to her, ears twitching as the pokemon looked up at winnie expectantly. "well, i suppose we just wait for pokemon to show up," she said, "we need to get you all leveled up!" with a smile, she gave her bag a pat, feeling the pokeballs safely nestled in there. already she had managed to pick up a few extra pokemon (4 others, to be exact), but they were all severely under-leveled and she couldn't possibly fight the scourge with such baby pokemon.
hoo. hoo. the quiet cooing came from some place close to the ground, where a round hoothoot was blinking dazedly in the light. it hopped back and forth, obviously disoriented. where was its nest? where was its mama? the bird pokemon took one hop forward before tumbling over and rolling down the dock, hooting and flailing wildly. this was bad.
winnie sat for a moment, but thought the whole waiting business was ... well, a little boring. she wanted to be adventuring and battling ferocious pokemon! not just sitting on a dock, waiting for something to happen. though, she supposed she didn't exactly know what else she was supposed to do. with a small frown, winnie stared off into the horizon again, wondering if there was something else she was supposed to do. or somewhere else she could go. or maybe she just needed to be more patient and wait a little longer. "hey, ciara, what do you think we should do?" she asked, turning to face her pokemon--only to find her side empty. panicked, she stood up and turned in circles, searching for the gligar, but instead of the familiar blue shape, something else caught her eye. "what in the world--?" winnie breathed, just as the little hoothoot rolled down the dock, straight towards her, hooting wildly and struggling to regain control of the situation. oh the poor thing, winnie thought, and completely forgetting about her gligar, she stepped forward to try and help the little bird. when out of nowhere, ciara swooped in, claws glowing purple as she aimed a night slash at the bird.
ciara used night slash on the wild hoothoot!

flail flail -- everything was spinning and blurring into strange colors and bright light. (this was why mama said not to leave the nest too close to sunrise, huh?) the bird's talons attempted to rake the floor in an attempt to stop its rapid approach toward the ever-dreaded water to no avail.
this was very bad.
then, with a cry of pain, it felt something rake across its skin. the hoothoot slowly stopped rolling, propping itself up painfully on one foot. the bird pokemon hooted indignantly before retaliating. its large eyes glowed a deep crimson.
ciara let out a triumphant cry as she felt her claw dig into the small bird, though winnie felt ... a little conflicted. while she knew that a battle would be good, especially to get ciara some experience and level her up, she couldn't help but feel sorry for her opponent. the hoothoot was small and obviously young--it was out in the daytime, which was strange for nocturnal pokemon, and winnie figured that it was a young one, possibly unable to find its way to its nest before sunrise. and on top of that, ciara had been a little low-handed in attacking it without any warning. but well, now it was too late to fix anything. the battle had already begun and winnie knew ciara would lose respect for her if she called the battle off halfway. "watch out, ciara!" she called out, when she saw the hoothoot's eye glowing, but the gligar had circled around the air to avoid it. "use poison sting!" ciara quickly dove down to execute winnie's command, but right as she dove down towards the hoothoot, the other pokemon landed its peck attack squarely in her chest. with a squeal, the gligar whirled around, tail flailing wildly as it tried to land a poison sting.

the hoothoot tumbled out of the way of the gligar's tail, flapping its wings about in desperation. pain and light and confusion -- that's all it could focus on, and the pokemon soon began to cause a ruckus loud enough to raise the dead. what else could it do in its pain?
as the gligar felt her tail hit nothing but air, she hissed in frustration before taking to the air again. she circled the hoothoot, waiting for winnie's command and a good position for her to dive in and demolish this little simpering bird. but before her trainer could issue an attack, the hoothoot started crying and yelling and screaming, so loud that she could feel vibrations in her chest. gritting her teeth, and without waiting for winnie (who had clasped her hands over her ears and looked much too distracted anyway), she quickly darted around and dove down at the little bird, claw glowing dark as she slashed it in the little bird's direction.
ciara was hit by the wild hoothoot's uproar! ciara used agility! ciara used night slash on the wild hoothoot!

oop. the second time the claws injured the hoothoot, the pokemon was unable to bear the pain. in a pile of brown feathers, the pokemon collapsed on the dock.
suddenly, the unbearable cacophony ended and winnie removed her hands from her ears. when she looked up, all she saw was ciara, triumphantly perched on top of a feathery brown heap. with a small smile, winnie went up to her pokemon and knelt down. "good job baby girl," she said, giving the gligar and little pat on the head. the pokemon allowed her trainer to praise her--after all, she did do very well, finishing off this insolent hoothoot in record time. winnie looked down at the fainted pokemon, debating on capturing it. after all, she already had quite a few pokemon under her belt--but another one certainly wouldn't hurt. rummaging through her bag, she pulled out an empty pokeball and gently tossed it at the pokemon's limp body.

tuyet could i get an npc trainer? just want exp without the temptation of getting more pokemon haha
the hoothoot disappeared into the pokeball with a quick woosh and after a moment's wobbling, the sphere settled down, signalling a successful capture. winnie couldn't help the goofy grin that spread across her face. she had successfully won her first battle against a wild pokemon and caught it. despite the danger and the responsibility she knew she had as an eos trainer, she couldn't help the bubbling excitement in her chest. "haha, we did it, ciara!" she said, turning around to face her gligar who merely sniffed and took to the air. we? how silly of winnie to think that she had done anything in that battle. but the pokemon couldn't help feeling smug and triumphant and didn't want to ruin that feeling. after all, this was her first battle outside of the laboratory, and it felt ... nice.
scooping the pokeball into her bag, winnie turned down the dock. she already had so many pokemon, and now she had to train them so that they would be useful. squinting her eyes, she scanned the docks for a potential opponent, feeling over-confident after her small victory.
clapclapclap. "good job!" the little girls giggled, walking hand-in-hand down the dock. "you look like a good trainer, miss!" they smiled brightly up at her. "our mommy gave us some pokemon, too -- but we can't leave proserpina." their faces fell. "would you like to battle us?"
tuyet they have bows too asdlkjf just like mini-winnies haha
at the sudden (and small) applause, winnie jumped, startled, though she was quickly calmed at the sight of the two little girls. "well thanks!" she said, smiling. there was a bubble of pride in her stomach as she realized that she had had an audience during her last battle. good thing she had won! and these girls were so god-dang cute. she couldn't refuse them in their request to battle. "sure, i'll battle you guys," winnie said, putting her hands on her hips. "is a double battle okay with you guys?" she asked, silently wondering if she should let these girls win, just because they were adorable. but a part of her, the battle-hungry part, wanted to continue winning. she was an eos trainer now, she couldn't allow herself to become swayed by the adorable qualities of these two little girls.
they giggled again. "of course! we fight as a team!" the pair of them bowed to winnie without letting go of the other, introducing themselves. "we're nikki and emma -- it's nice to meet you, miss!" they both tossed up a pokeball into the air, releasing their pokemon in flashes of bright scarlet light.
nikki and emma have challenged winnie to a battle!
tuyet oh question but does ciara get exp from the battle with the hoothoot?
oh my arceus these two were just absolutely adorable. winnie couldn't help but smile when they giggled and bowed to her--could they be any sweeter? but now wasn't the time to be thinking about that. it was time for a battle, which meant that she had to get serious now. battling a trainer would be much more difficult than battling a little wild pokemon, she figured, and plus, it would be a double battle, which would require more concentration. "nice to meet you guys," winnie said amiably, "but you don't have to call me 'miss'; my name's winnie." as they released their pokemon, winnie did a quick calculation in her head. she couldn't just release any pokemon, she wanted the two who would fight well together and were experienced enough so that they wouldn't die after the first move. deftly, she recalled ciara--the gligar would need the rest--and pulled two pokeballs from her bag and released the pokemon inside. with a flash, her pawniard and her skarmory appeared, both blinking in the sudden light.
"i hope you don't mind if i make the first move," winnie said, all thoughts of going easy on the two girls set aside. besides, being a trainer meant losing sometimes, and learning to accept losses was part of the growing up process, right? "orlaith, tailwind and peck the zangoose. carroll, use leer and psycho cut on that seviper," she commanded curtly, hoping her pokemon would listen. the golden skarmory cocked her head to look at winnie for a moment, before deciding that she would listen to her, this time. after all, insubordination was only fun if you kept people on their toes. the metal bird took to the air and created a strong gust of wind before using it to dive down at the zangoose while the pawniard darted forward, blades glinting in the sunlight.
orlaith used tailwind! orlaith used peck on the zangoose!
carroll used leer! carroll used psycho cut on the seviper!
