This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Larsa didn't really care that Zara was a breeder. That was all fine and dandy, but what about Decima? He wanted to go home, and he was certain that the other Karimi siblings were of the same mindset. On the other hand, his stakes were a little higher in his head. He was going to make it to Bacchus, and he was going to beat Alia if it was the last thing he did. She couldn't make him turn back, but he had his pride on the line. This was some very, very serious business.
"Zara, don't get lost in here," he warned. "It's super dark, but your eyes should have adjusted by now, yeah." He tried his hardest to keep his voice steady. Gosh, he really hated the dark. Somehow, having Zara here with him was a bit reassuring. Granted, she wasn't the best audience member for emotional support, but he couldn't complain. Having her agree to come was an accomplishment in itself. When he thought about it, he swelled a bit with pride.
Alternatively, he also understood the high stakes of this match. If he couldn't get past Esme, there was no way he'd get past the staunch wall of Alia Karimi. He was going to get to Decima; he fully intended on standing with his own two feet.
Still, this gym and these caves were pretty fucking creepy.
She glanced around her, barely making out the shapes in silhouettes of her surroundings. She ignored her brother's warnings and ran her fingers along the cavern's walls. It was ... comfortable here, she felt. It wasn't as bright as outside, with its glaring sunlight and noisy pokemon (and people, a la her brother).
Granted, he was still here with her, but she fully intended on leaving him after his gym battle. She was simply curious.
Zara followed in silence for a while until they reached what she assumed to be the arena. (Not as if she knew what it looked like.) "We're here." Zara tried to see through the almost-suffocating darkness. "... Maybe."
She stood, playing with a lock of her hair and half-listening to the conversation of the two. They were here for a challenge. Eseme was positive that they were here for a challenge, because nobody visited her gym nowadays without wanting to ask for that challenge. And some of them were unworthy, very unworthy, and she made sure they understood that when the battle was done. It was tedious.
At least they'd been mindful enough to shut the door. It wouldn't be a challenge, otherwise. Part of that challenge, she noted with a nod, they'd already basically overcome, groping their way through the dark to approach her (because those that couldn't even stomach the darkness didn't deserve to be challenging her). One thing that was different was that they really bore different attitudes towards this place. Another was that there were two of them.
"Only one challenger may battle at a time." Eseme said, simply, twirling a pokeball between her thumb and index finger.
Larsa just about jumped out of his very skin when Esme appeared. Fortunately, the threat of having Zara as an onlooker was enough for him to grasp for his wits. He raised a hand and waved it slightly in the gym leader's direction. "Oh yeah, that'd be me," the trainer responded. "Gym's open, yeah? Um, if not, we're really sorry!"
Still, his actions clashed greatly with his words. The trainer with blue hair had already released his first Pokemon. A Pupitar appeared in the dark arena with fiery eyes. "Sauron's roaring and raring to go!" The Pupitar merely rolled his eyes at his hopeless trainer.
"Zara, watch closely, okay? I'm gonna give it my best shot!"

Zara rolled her eyes at her brother. He was such an idiot. The girl leaned back against the wall, folding her arms across her chest, while he released that noisy pokemon of his.
"How am I supposed to watch when it's dark in here." Oh, well. Maybe Esme would be more interesting than listening to Larsa babble on and on (and on and on) while giving commands to his pokemon.
She didn't know how to battle anyway, so it might as well be a learning experience.
The words echoed in the silence, mostly because Eseme couldn't really be bothered to answer his silly little questions if he so obviously knew the answer already. So she stayed silent, quietly observing the pokeball in her hands and idly wondering why he'd brought someone along if they weren't going to partake in the challenge themselves.
"Achilles." Glowing red eyes a second later, followed by a laugh in the darkness, and the woman nodded. Sufficient introduction, especially seeing as the challenge here was to overcome the darkness that mimicked the hardships outside.
The laugh made Larsa's skin crawl. It was childish to be afraid of the dark, but he'd never been able to shake that fear off. It was made worse by being in the presence of ghost Pokémon. Still, Zara was watching, so he couldn't make an entire fool out of himself. He had to win this battle and get his game face on. He could do it. He just had to believe that he could.
It was harder for Sauron to move with this body. On the other hand, he certainly felt sturdier like this. The Pokémon shuddered a bit as the Shadow Ball hit him in the side. He managed to tumble out of the way of Achilles' Shadow Ball attack before countering with an ugly noise. Hidden within the loud din came a beam of dark energy that would hopefully hurt the Pokémon.
