This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"get out." dad had said. "go." he had said. "g-go where?" there is a tremor in tiebout's voice. "juno." the last word he heard from his father. fresh in his mind, barely two weeks old.
but here he was, he had finally made it. the winged goddess eos has led him here- over yonder, past the dawn. and although he has been, in tangible sense, alone for his travels, it will all change here. his partner will prevent himself and then he will be off again.
where to, you may ask? wherever tiebout's ever-wayward destiny takes him.
and speaking of destiny, it has finally blown, pushed, pulled, and nudged him to cypress laboratories. he adjusts his backpack and breathes. catches his breath, just for a second in time. it's the first time he's done this in two weeks, and it will probably be the last time he does it for a while. he knows what is out there- bloody creatures, lurking in the shadows, hungry for their next meal.
he knocks rapidly and loudly on the door. about twenty times. @any mod

The first knock, he doesn't hear. The second knock, he also doesn't hear.
... Actually, he doesn't hear any of them until around ten or so -- that's when Cypress wakes up with a start, falling out of his chair with a loud crash. "I-I'm coming!" he wheezes, disentangling himself from the chair and removing the papers that have been glued to his face while he slept.
Whoever's at the door, they certainly know how to get him up. Points for enthusiasm, if nothing else.
Cypress attempts to straighten his hopelessly-wrinkled lab coat before opening the door with a wide, if not slightly disoriented smile. "H-hello there! Um, why don't you -- why don't you come in?"
He moves away from the door, waving him in, and hastily nudges the papers strewn about the floor aside. "Forgive the, um, mess." The professor pushes up his glasses. "You're here for a pokemon, r-right?"
the door eventually opens, but tiebout has since turned and started to hustle away from the labs. he's only made it a few steps when he hears the professor speak. he whips around and returns to the door. he beams and peeks into the lab through the doorway, his eyes wandering through the mess, trying to make any pokemon out through the clutter.
"i'm tiebout garenne, sir." he says boldly, shaking the professors hand. his grip is firm and enthusiastic, but he rushes the handshake and steps into the lab, taking it all in. "forgiven. trust me, my family's apartment is worse than this, most of the time-" he takes a breath, "i am here for a pokemon, sir."
he doesn't make eye contact with the professor, in fact he doesn't pay attention to him at all. he just slowly turns at a 360 degree angle, scanning every inch of the laboratory. clearly, he's never seen anything like it. tuyet

Cypress laughs, even though it comes out as less amused and more ... nervous. "Well Tie -- Tiebout? -- you're in the right, um, place."
He smiles reassuringly before digging through the stacks of drool-stained papers. Cypress mumbles to himself ("I'm sure I put it here ...?") before making a strangled noise of triumph and pulling a booklet from underneath a precariously tall pile.
The papers topple over, but he hands Tiebout the little packet regardless. "Here you go!"
he waits quietly while cypress rummages through his papers. tiebout fidgets excitedly as his fingers wrap around the booklet. he flips through it once very quickly- it's full of pictures and information about each pokemon that is available, their evolutions and attacks, as well as their place of capture and blah, blah, blah. he doesn't pay attention to any of the licensing stuff.
it's the vanilite that catches his eye initially. it's adorable, first of all, and it's an ice type. they're pretty rare these days and they've got strong attacks to boot so.... it seems like a good choice?
honestly tiebout doesn't know anything at all about pokemon. he's never had experience with them before....it doesn't matter. they've all been trained by the professor, and therefore they're all bound to be good choices.
"va-vanillite? is that how you pronounce it?" he asks, pointing to the picture of the ice cream cone. "that's the one i want." tuyet

"Y-yes, of course!" Cypress grabs a pokeball and a bag, pushing them at Tiebout, before offering what he hopes is a reassuring smile. "G-good luck out there -- um, and be c-careful!"
