This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

He didn't think he belonged here as he watched the pokemon meander around the ranger's headquarters. Jax was a downtown boy. Worn old leather jacket. Pale skin bitten with tattoos. Mud on his knee from where he tripped hiking up here. The city-dweller stayed out of the way. He didn't have friends like pokemon. He didn't have many friends like people either. They say even a cowboy has his horse, but Jax always preferred the machine. A cold, silent grip. Why was he here?
Well, that was his secret, and his business alone.
Not that Jax wasn't qualified. But if his father saw him now, this rogue probably would have give up while he was ahead, skuttle back to some safe city, and sulk amount the other refuges. There were other places to live.
But at the moment, Jax didn't mind watching a pack of Ratata haul a basket of food. He looked away when one looked up at him, but then he looked back, harsh, and their eyes met and it chirped.
When he met Ezra, he didn't try to make a big deal out of it.
"Jacques Devereux," his eyes like grass snakes, a glimmer squirming. "How can I help?"
In, out, in, out -- there are so many that have come to her, seeking strength for strength itself, and there are so many she's turned away for that same reason. Passion, bravery, loyalty, everything she's looking for and no one she can find it in.
(But this is a time of war, and even Sa'di realizes sacrifices must be made.)
She stares at him with an even, calculating gaze as he approaches her. How can I help, he asks -- and the obvious answer is to eliminate the Scourge threat, find the source of the virus, obliterate it, but --
-- well, things are hardly ever that simple, so instead the corners of her mouth turn up in what might be amusement ... or irritation. "Why don't you tell me, Devereux? How can you help?"

He crossed his arms, knowing he wasn't a hiker. He wasn't a ranger. He deserved the judgement splattered across her face. Bitterly, he removed an old, beaten up certificate.
"I was a boy scout until my teens. I know enough." He remembered his father dragging him up mountains and pointing at tracks in the mud. The knowledge had all been shoved down his throat, a reluctant child, but now, he could shove it back at the woman in charge. Jax couldn't say it had all been a waste now.
Sa'di doesn't even look at the crumpled certificate he hands her; her eyes are still focused on him, on this potential ranger-to-be.
She's openly gauging his worth, and apparently he has enough -- or she's willing to risk it for him. Either way, Sa'di stands from her chair and motions for him to follow.
"Come." He's led to a pen of particularly bright pokemon, most of which turn to look at him when he comes near. "Find your partner."

The dude isn't one to make choices like this. These pokemon aren't poems; he can't read them, nor dissect their souls in five minutes. All Sa'di could do is let him pick a face, and she's in a hurry.
Well, the battery is a serious lot, nodding to each other and looking up at him. They all trusted Sa'di, and for this, they all respected him in an instant. The dude was overwhelmed though he tried to look like he didn't care. He looked at all of them, trying to claw into their identities. They were like people, right? They had souls. They had eyes. He met each of them silently.

He doesnt exactly know how to pick. Jax scans their expectant faces, and he thinks of the people who have influenced him. A lot of them had very physical builds, real creatures of the mountains. Sun moon rain stars. He looked for the one that would sympathize with him. It was hard and he still wasn't sure, but the Snivy Seemed like fine company. A serious chill had been shared when their eyes had met.
"The snivy will do then if it so desires..." The grass pokemon stepped forward, standing naturally beside Jax. It shot a venomous look up as if it knew there were a few lessons it had to teach its new partner.
Sa'di only inclines her head in silent approval as the Snivy took its place beside the new Ranger. "Very well, then." The woman takes a bag and hands it to Jax. "Good luck."
He'll need it.
