This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

it had been a long while. ever since having to pay for damage done to the training center, J had not bothered returning to it. now, he was forced to, despite glares from the assistants in the room. with everyone growing stronger, he too needed to step up his game.
the trainer led his empoleon, scyther and samurott into the training room. all of them were promptly placed on treadmills and told to run. naturally the penguin couldn't run. the scyther just hovered a few inches off the ground. the samurott was almost as helpless as the bird.
as long as he wasn't wrecking anything, he should be fine. or so he thought, anyway. it didn't stop him from being watched for each move he took. by the time he had his pokémon fighting floating targets, he was already being scrutinized to a point where J was about ready to lodge a complaint.
empoleon, scyther and samurott all destroyed their targets. J lodged a complaint anyway.
there had been a lot less screaming and angry people in them, and instead there was an oddly-shaped fruit talking to him about ... something. the trainer zoned out as his empoleon, scyther and samurott played a game of charades.
the samurott was winning by a mile. the scyther was about average. the penguin was absolute shit.
the scyther tried getting J to join them. half-sleepy, J did.
they trained for a while until the samurott felt a new surge of energy enter its bloodstream. did it ... level up?!
from the outside, the centre staff peered in through the one-way mirror. what kind of shit was this team of four up to.
the days were long since gone and passed. night fell upon the real world and J approached the dream world, pokémon team in tow. his relationship with the centre attendants had not improved any since their last visit.
J cautiously entered the training room and released his empoleon, scyther and samurott. the three pokémon eyed each other. this was not going to be routine, was it? still, they set to work.
they had a four-man game of monopoly, which was apparently supposed to help with geography, maths and self-control (to not flip the board over). J was not the banker. the samurott was. J as a banker would be terrible.
the scyther ended up in jail. the centre staff eyed each and every one of them carefully. J turned around, before raising his shield. despite being a defensive item, it could damn well be used offensively. he had watched his pokéwood movies and did his research.
a centre attendant let loose a flamethrower in the room. J's shield saved the day and their game of monopoly.
the training room was quite literally filled with water.
something was clearly amiss. the trainer and his pokémon had disappeared from view. the centre attendant jammed the button to engage the drainage system in the room, muttering to herself how some trainers never learnt.
just short of one hour ago, J had been training his empoleon, scyther and samurott. it had been a bad idea to continually train these three, but he wanted them to get stronger and the only way to do so was to keep at it in the centre.
five minutes into the sparring session, J realized that quartz and daikenki were very much likely to kill them all by firing hydro pumps at each other. the jets of water were relentless. fed up, ion the scyther had stabbed some buttons on the wall, hoping to trigger something to induce a temporary ceasefire between the creatures.
a wall slid open, and a massive wave of water crashed into the room.
another day at the training center it was. wary of the angry looks he was getting from the attendants, J switched his usual team for different pokémon. there was a skarmory, a lucario and the samurott from before. considering how two of them were switched out, he felt that there wouldn't be much of an issue getting them to cooperate.
sure enough, training went without a hitch. it was during the break hour that things got a bit messy.
the lucario had started it all. it started a fucking food fight which escalated into a real fight. the skarmory rolled its eyes and walked off to do something else; only the samurott and lucario remained, throwing empty cans and wrappers at each other.
J decided to intervene with his new staff from the anvil. (no, he didn't meet shamees.) unfortunately, it sped both pokémon up.
the onix was a new face in the training center. the scyther and charizard were familiar one.
J trailed behind them and this time, he stayed outside the training room, much to the chagrin of the centre attendants. the trainer wasn't going to have anything weird happen in the room under his watch. the attendants were similarly hassled at the fact that J wasn't in the room with his pokémon.
the onix, scyther and charizard sparred with and against each other. the scyther was losing miserably, but its evolution was imminent. J had promised it that, and even showed it the metal coat.
he hadn't counted on the onix getting jealous, but he had many of them. sparring went on as instructed via the speakers.
everything went well. (the centre attendants grew suspicious.)
the skarmory, aggron and onix were bent over a coffee table trying to build a castle out of lego bricks. needless to say, it was a one-man job. the aggron picked up a block with its large, clumsy hands and attempted to piece them together. the onix had no hands. the skarmory's claws were made for attacking instead of delicate work. J watched on from the side, somewhat approvingly.
in the end, the trio managed to build a lopsided castle. it didn't really amount to much, to be rather honest. it only took a blow from the onix to scatter the blocks and they were once again back to square one.
"play nice," J said from the other side of the room, as he briefly contemplated the expansion of his money-lending business. he could always hire more people, but there weren't many of them that he trusted. he couldn't really ask thalia. she'd end up spending the money or losing half of it on an extravagant adventure involving firebreathing and angry ditto. or something like that.
"guys."
the onix roared and flipped the entire table before smashing the ground with a smack down.
empoleon and onix were acquaintances. the doublade, they had never seen before. the emperor penguin regarded the sword pokémon with a steely eye, while the onix bent over to look at the doublade curiously. neither of them made a move; the former two standing on the left while the doublade hovered off to the right.
'who are you,' said the empoleon. 'what place do you have in this team?'
the onix murmured its agreement, rocky head swaying in the air.
the twins blinked at each other, then snickered. 'plenty of room for more, don't you think?' their blade-like bodies reflected the artificial light from the ceiling, shining the refractions into the empoleon's eyes to annoy it. 'lots of time and space.' more snickering, and a smirk if swords smirked.
the empoleon responded by launching an earthquake on everything.
