This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.

The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

grayson stood on kraq's back, one hand on the salamence's neck. nana stood by his side, watching carefully. grayson heard a rumour recently about the famed lustrous orb being dropped somewhere over mt aurae. the chances that he could find it were slim to none, but he had to try. nana's ears pricked, the gem on her head glowing. "let's go down lower." he murmured, and kraq descended to the base of the mountain.
grayson and nana hopped off, returning kraq to his pokeball. "let's go hunting, shall we?"
the base of the mountain was relatively temperate, but going upwards would net colder weather. the surroundings were mostly shrubs and forests, and more exploring would likely lead to a pokémon battle.
other than that, there weren't things of much note when it came to the foot of mt aurae. the forests had trees. the shrubs had leaves. things like that.

grayson was lucky he didn't fall on anything sharp, really. as soon as he got up, however, he would find himself in a completely different area of mt aurae. still at the base of the mountain, but definitely not where he had landed.

more wandering ceased to do nothing for grayson. the more he walked, the more everything seemed ... exactly the same. the dewdrops reflected grayson's appearance in a mimicry of a kaleidoscope; the skies seemed glassy and things seemed to be broken up into various fragments and mirrors of itself.
the trees were on the ground and so was the sky. the trees were in the sky.

he didn't expect a lake, he expected the harsh terrain of the mountains. nana flattened her ears nervously, paws kneading the grass. grayson glanced at the map on his phone, but there was no signal. "stay close, nana."
tentatively, grayson walked forward to the edge of the lake. he kneeled down, dipping his hand into the water. it was ice cold.
nothing was in the water save for a creature that shouldn't have been there in the first place:

enraged and furious at what nature had thrown upon itself, it snapped out of the water and almost turned greyson into hook. it hissed furiously, opening and closing its jaws menacingly.

well that certainly wasn't what it was expecting. grayson turned and ran from the edge of the water, throwing a pokeball in the process. lapras used water pulse
look, let's talk some sense here for a moment: the krookodile was probably super weakened from being in water (see: ground-type) and now grayson was throwing more water at it. great.
it fainted, have fun with your levels, boy. moving on. (you never considered if that was palkia in disguise? heh.)
the lapras was left standing alongside its breeder and an espeon. the lake view remained; the water remained icy, but nothing lurked within. ever since grayson stepped into the forest, everything had become suspiciously empty and devoid of life; what did remain seemed to be nothing more than an unfortunate accident.

lock returned to her pokeball. grayson bent back down to the edge of the water. it was clear, but he hadn't at all seen the krookodile coming. the bright red colouring should have been clear as day.
grayson grabbed nana in his arms and started wading into the water. he looked down and couldn't see his legs, but could see right through the water.
weird.

as grayson walked, the water seemed to grow more and more shallow -- until he simply was standing upon the glassy surface of the lake. the water below was as crystal clear as it always had been, and oddly enough, grayson wasn't soaked.
